Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 22, 1908. Serial No. 412,161.-
Be it known that-I, SANFORD ELLERY,0IE Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v I My invention relates to an improvement in beds and more particularly to means for generating and disseminating magnetic lines of force'throughout the bed structure in such manner that said lines of force may be utilized for medicinal purposes in the treatment of a patient occupying the bed.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts whereby the spring mattress of a bed structure can be magnetized and magnetic lines of force be also caused to circulate over and through the superposed mattress. And the invention further. consists in various constructive details and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of my improvements to a bed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a spring mattress with my improvements connected therewith, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view.
1 represents a bed frame and 2 a spring mattress thereon. A series of electro-magnets 3 is located at each end of the mattress and to the lower end of the core of each magnet an iron arm 4 is secured. The arms 4 are disposed horizontally and are secured to the iron-framework of the mattress. To facilitate the attachment of the magnets and the arms 4 disks or washers 5 7 may be employed and the members of the mattress framework clamped between said disks or washers and arms 4 by means of screws 6 passing through both. The several magnet coils of the two series of magnets are connected in circuit with a suitable battery 7 through the medium of a switch 9 which may be attached to the head of the bed within easy reach of the occupant of the latter. An additional switch 10 may be provided by means of which an additional. battery may be included in the circuit of the magnet coils when it is desired to increase the density of the magnetic lines of force flowing through the mattress structure from the pole of one magnet to that of another. The conductors 11 extending from the series of magnets at one end of the bed to the series at the other end thereof, may be conveniently disposed at respective sides of the springs of the mattress and attached to the upper convolutions of said springs by twisting or coiling them on the latter. The coils of the electroemagnets will be incased by shells of any suitable material'such as brass for protecting said coils and the bed clothing from each other. Strands of wire 12 of magnetic material are secured to the upper end of the core of each magnet and these strands may be extended from the magnet cores at one end of the mattress to the magnet cores at the other end thereof and, if
- desired, made to pass over a superposed soft mattress 18. If desired, a number of Wires of magnetic material may be placed upon the superposed mattress 18 and connected with the poles of the magnets in any suitable manner and these wires may if desired be connected together at intermediate points.
The bed and mattress frame which with my improvement may be used may be constructed of either iron (chilled or soft) or Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
steel or my improvements may be applied to a structure having a body of iron or steel with coating of other material.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction of my improvement without departing from the spirit of my invention or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise constructive details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. The combination with a bed spring mattress of magnetic material, of a series of electro-mag'nets secured to said mattress and Wires of magnetic material secured to the cores of said magnets and disposed over said spring mattress.
2. In a bed, the combination with a spring mattress having an iron frame, of a series of electro-magnets, iron arms secured to the lower. poles of said magnets, and means for clamping said arms to, and magnetically connecting them with the iron frame of the spring mattress.
3. In a bed, the combination with an iron spring mattress of a series of horizontal arms at each end of said spring mattress and magnetically connected therewith, and aseries of electro-magnets located at each end of the spring mattress, supported by said iron arms and magnetically connected therewith. I
4;. The combination: with a spring mattress oi? magnetic material, of a series of electro-magnets' at each end of said mattress, the cores of said magnets having direct magnetic connection with said spring mattress.
5. The combination with. a mattress ofi 1 connected; with said. mattress, andf a series i of wires also of magnetic material attachedl at their ends to the cores of said magnets and disposed above said mattress.
U. The combination with a mattress of magnetic material, of two series of electromagnets, the lower ends of the cores of the magnets of each series magnetically connected with said n'rattress and strands of wire ;above said mattress and magnetically concluded in circuit with the electro-magnets.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SANFORD ELLERY.
