CHARLES r. PRATT, or FnANKFoR'r, NEW YORK.
OUTLET on JUNofrroN' Box.
To all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. PRATT, of Frankfort, inthe county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented. certainnew and useful Improvemehts'in Outlet or Junction Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art' towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, and to the characters o Yreference marked thereon, which form'part of th'is'specification.-
The object Aof my inventionv is to provide an improved closure for'openings in outlet or junction boxes, which is effective and well adapted both in its application and removal to its urpose. i
Figure 1 s ows a perspective view of an outlet or junction box having a number of my closures applied. Fig. 2-is an enlarged detail showing a plan view of a closure. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line A-B of Fig. 2. Fig.'4 is a section taken on line C--Dy of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the method of forming or producing in part the closure referred to.
Referring to the reference letters andfigures in a more particular description, 1 indicates the body of the box which is preferably of drawn sheet metal, ordinarily about one-sixteenth of an inch in thickness. This box is provided with a number of suitably located openings in its walls for the reception of the end of the ordinary electric wire conduit. These openings are screw-threaded and are adapted 4to receive the plate closures Q which are'of disk form, having a thickcned edge 2a formed to a bevel or angle, as though they were a section of a cone, and externally screw-'threaded as indicated at B to engage with the screw-threads of the wall of the box 1. The disk 2 will also preferably be provided with a depressed opening Q" adapted to receive a screw driver or other wrench for turning the closure plate. When screwed into position, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the closure lates 2 effectively close the opening in the ox, and, at the same time, the screw-threads being provided at a Specication of Letters Patent. Application led February 15, 1907. Serial No. 357,467.
relatively steep angle and the edge of erable variations in the size of the openings whichthey are adaptedto close. Inother words, if the opening were relatively small Patented oet. 12, 1909.
the disk thickened, willcompensate for considthe vcap or closure would not be screwed 1n as near to the general' plane of the wall as it might otherwise be, and in case of a loose fit the cap would screw somewhat through. the wall before itl became a close lit.
It will be understood, of course, that the box is formed with-the desired number of openings, and these openings are all closed by caps or closures of the kind specified and when brought into rusesuch of the caps or closures are removed toprovide openings as are found necessary, while the others recanberemoved by a screw-driver or wrench, which is the preferable way, although the steep angle provided at the edges of the cap at'the screw will enable the caps or closures to be displaced with a blow either directly from a hammer or by the intervention of a punch. The caps or closures 2 maybe applied from the outside of the box, as shown in Fig. 1, or from the inside of the box, as preferred.,y l
The method of forming the thickened periphery or edge on the disks and at the same time embossing a screw-thread thereon 6ov i tain their positions in the box. The caps von.l
is shown in Fig. 5, and may be brieliyidescribed as follows: The plate or closure is mounted on a free rotating turntable 1() and is engaged by embossing rollers 11-11 ro- 85 tating against the edge, which at the same time upset or bead the edge and emboss a thread thereon. y
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sheet metal outlet or junction box having a series of beveled screw threaded' openings and having closures for said openin s consisting of sheet. metal disks having thickened and beveled screw threaded edges substantially in the plane of the `bodies of the disks.
2. A sheet metal outlet or junction box having a series of beveled screw threaded" openings and having closures for said openings consisting of sheet metal disks having l nature, in presence of two Witnesses, this thlckened and beveled screw threaded edges f first day of February 1907. substantially in the plane of the bodies of v the disks, said disks having offset portions Q CHARLES T PRA'l F 5 provided With recesses for the recept-ion of g Vtnesses:

In Witness whereof, I have aixed my sig- M. L. FARRELL.
