To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM A. BRAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Tonawanda, county of Niagara, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Driving and Controlling Devices for Me chanically Operated Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined driving and controlling devices for mechanically operated musical instruments.
In mechanically operated musical instruments it is desirable to provide means whereby the tempo may be rapidly and easily changed as desired, as well as safety in operation being insured.
The present invention seeks to provide means to accomplish the foregoing purposes and has for its object the provision of a combined driving and controlling mechanism for mechanically operated musical instruments, whereby the speed may be rapidly and easily varied at will and in which provision will be made for an automatic relief so that if any foreign substance interferes with the action of the instrument, no damage will result.
The invention is carried out by the provision of a friction driving mechanism of novel construction, wherein the relative arrangement of the friction wheels may be rapidly and easily changed and in which the tension of the frictional contact of said wheels may be regulated so that there will be a relative automatic slip thereof if any foreign substance interferes with the action of the machine so that no damage will result, although the tension will be such that under ordinary conditions the instrument will be operated.
The invention is set forth fully hereinafter and its novel features are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of my invention as it appears connected with an electrical motor; Fig. 2, a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 3, a plan view of Fig. 2.
J ournaled in suitable bearings 1 is a shaft 2 carrying a step pulley 3 which is designed to be belted to the operative parts of the mechanically operated musical instrument. Screwed into the outermost bearing 1 are the screws 4 which pass through a yoke 5. Slidable through the yoke 5 is a tension rod 6 surrounded by a coil spring 7, which bears against the yoke, said tension rod having a head 8 against which the other end of the spring bears and being provided with an end-pieee 9 of brass, fiber, or other suitable material, which is of suitable size to be re-' ceived in the shaft bearing and which bears against the end of the shaft 2. The screws 1 afl'ord means for adjusting the tension of the spring and its consequent pressure on the shaft 2, whereby the force with which the said shaft is urged may be regulated. Secured to the shaft 2 is a friction disk 10.
A suitable electrical motor 11 constitutes the motive power, to the shaft of which there is coupled a shaft 12 which is mounted in a bearing 13. The shaft has a key-way or slot 14. Slidably mounted 011 the shaft 12 is a friction pinion composed of an illtegral hub and plate 15, a clamping plate 15*, a wheel 15 of rubber or other suitable material, such as fiber or wood pulp and screws 15 by which the wheel 15 and plates are secured together. Secured to the hub by a lug 16 is a spline or key 16 which is received in the slot 14, whereby said pinion may slide lengthwise of said shaft but will always rotate with it. The spring 7 holds the friction Wheel in the desired frictiomil engagement with the pinion. 3y adjusting the tens-ion of the spring, the frictional engagement of the frictional wheel can be regulated at will so that the musical instrir ment will be operated under ordinary circumstances, but should any interference with its action take place, the relative slip of the friction wheels will prevent any damage being done. Slidable 011 the shaft 12 is a boxing 17, between whose arms the pinion is disposed. An adjusting shaft 18, which is provided with a hand-wheel 19, is journaled in the bearing 13, and another bearing 20 which is incapable of lengthwise movement, has a screw-threaded part 21, which is threaded through a depending part of the boxing 17 so that on turning said adjusting shaft, the pinion may be shifted crosswise of the friction wheel, and consequently, any desired speed obtained. As the bearings wear there is necessarily more or less of a wavering motion of the disk and pinion which, however, is effectually and automatically taken up by the spring 7.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by ters Patent, is
1. In a combined driving and controlling device, the combination with a driven shaft, of a friction disk carried thereby, adjusting screws, a yoke adjustable by said screws, a tension rod slidable through the yoke and having its end bearing against the end of the driven shaft, a coil spring surrounding said tension rod which bears on the yoke and on the said rod to hold it in engagement with the driven shaft, a driving shaft, and a friction wheel carried by the driving shaft which is in engagement with'the friction disk aforesaid.
