The amount of opening through the stationary grinding disk is regulated by means of a gate 40 located adjacent to the disk 38 fand-which is rotatable about shaft 26 as a center. Said gate has van aperture which by preference is similar in size and outline to the aperture 39 yin the stationary' grinding disk. The parts are so arranged that when the gate 4.0 is rotated it will vary the size of the opening into. said stationary grinder. Said gate is provided with an extension l1-1 whereby it may be rotated, said extension having a return vbend 42 adapted to engage the ange 43 of the cutting chamber 36 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Said extension and return bend are apertured to receive a bolt-44 having a wingnut 45 thereonl and the parts' are so' arranged that when said nut is tightened it will canse the extension 4l and bend 42to clamp the flange 43 and hold the gate in set position. By this inea-ns the size of opening into the grinding disk may be regulated to a nicety by moving but a single member of the machine and the part may be set by merely screwing up the singie nut.
Opposed to the stationary rindin disk is a rotary grinding disk 4.6 w ich is olted or otherwise' secured to the spider 47' which rotates with shaft 26. The preferred means 1 of attachment of spider 47 to shaft 26 is pin when no material is 43,. shown in FigsfQ and 4. As the connection is thus rigid the spider' and rotary grinder not onl rotate with shaft 26 but produce a longitu ina] ovcment of said shaft in case the rotary grinding disk moves toward or from the stationary grinding disk.
ln order to permit such motion toward and from the stationary grinding disk there is, under normal conditions, a space between the hub 49 of spider 47 and the inside of end plate'23 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
A coiled compression spring 50 encircles shaft 26 and is located between the two grinding disks vfor kecpinff' the latter apart in. the space betweenl them. in the preferred arrangement spring F0 bears at one end against the hub 49 of the spider e7 and at the other end against the cutter or breaker 3'?. The thrust thus set up in part 37 is transmitted through the breakers 31 to the breaker 32 which bears against the end of box or bearing 24. This p keeps parts 37, 3i and' 32 always in intel locked position and yet permits the lon'itndinal movement of the shaft when t e grinding disks vary their distance from each ot er.
ln order to permitthe rotary disk to yield when ,an obstruction is present and yetnorniaily hold the disk as close as it'shouldf, be to the stationary disk, an arm 51 is'A pivoted to arib or boss 52 formed upon the end plate 23,#the free end of said arm being v yieldingly connected to the end plate 23 byl a-tension spring 53 best shown in Fig. 1. The inward movement of arm 51 is limited by a stop 54- which contacts a suitable portion of said end plate. Pressure is trans-A mitted from arm 5l to shaft 2G through the regulating screw which screws into said lever in such position that its inner end contacts a' thrust bearing which inits preferred form consists of a block 5G, recessed to fit over thc end of the shaft 2G and convey oil thereto through a duct 56a' leading downward from the oil reservoir 56h as best shown in Figs. 2 and 12. lt is desirable to interpose one or more anti-friction disks 56a between the block and the end of the shaft. Screw 55 is rotated by a hand wheel 57, this wheel being held in set position by means of '4 stop 54: in contact with t e end plate 23.
The distance between the disks when in approached position may 'be regulated by rotating the hand wheel.- 57 i and thus increasing or decreasing thel pressure upon spring 50, spring 53 being strong enough to heid stop 54 in contact with end-plate 23 v except when a stone or other substantially non vcrushable object comes between the disks.
In order to provide motive' power for the operation of supplementary mechanism such as an elevator (not shown) it is desirable to spline a sprocket wheel 60 upon shaft 26 between bearing 25 and arm 5]., such cony nection. permitting longitudinal movement of shaft 26.
-The formation of the case which incloses thegrindin disks is of special convenience in our mac ine, its construction being best shown in Fi s. l, 2 and 4e. The cover 61 consists` pre erably or" sheet steel and is arched so as to come outside of and concentricwith the grinding disks. It is substantiallysemi circular in cross section and is provided at its lower edges with ianges 62 which beard 'on/the bed plate 22 and are apertured forreceive capV screws 63 (shown in Fig. 5.). The bottom of the case is formed by' the mein trame itself which ter of tie disks. i The end plate 23 which bolts to the main frame forms the end of. hekcase and completes the closure about the 1s s. are readily accessible and may be removed by merely unbolting the end plate and removing the pin 48.
Having thus described vour invention, what With this construction the disks.
