PROCESS FOR. MAKING SUGAR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6, 1m.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
UNITED STATE$ PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PARRIS STEWART, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL SUGAR COMPANY. 0]? LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. A CORPORATION OF ARIZONA TERRITORY.
PROCESS FOR MAKING SUGAR.
To all u liom it may com-era:
.lie it. known that i. (faruuacslamns H'rnw .\n'i'. a eitizen ot' the tnited States, residing at Los .\ngeles. in the eounty ol- Los Angeles and State ol' (:ililol'iiia. have invented a new and usel'ul lroeess for Making Sugar, ol whieh the following is a speeit'itaition.
This invention relates to the synthetic proeess for the inanulzu-ture of sugar, and it is. an ohjeet thereo'l' to provide a process whereby sugar ean be manufactured from ordinat' and inexpensive suhstal'iees.
This applieation is tiled as a eouttinuation ol' my applieation entitled proeess of making sugar. h'. N. 368,267. liled April 1.5. 1907.
In the aeeon:panyiug drawings 1 have illustrated a lorn. of apparatus whieh may be employed in operating my process, the: lignre illustrated being a diagrannnatic View t of the. apparatus employed. parts being broken away and enlarged lor t.-.larit. y ol illustration.
in the torn; ol' apparatus shown in the drawings 1 designates a steam boiler of any usual type eouneeted by a pipe 2 to a super l heating lurnaee is provided l nrnaee with a pipe --l'. or a. series of the same, of heat resisting material, preferably elay, and the steam from the boiler passes through this pipe. the amount being eontrolled by valve 5 on pipe 3. From the outlet end of clay pipe -l-. pipe (3 leads to a earbon retort 7. This eat-hon retort is eomposed of an inner heating ehamher eontaining ehareoal 8). or other form o'l earbon. which is heated by means of burners ti). After passing through the heated earhon the gases pass out through pipe 11 to a eooling tank. or eoinleuser, l2, and thenee through a pipe 13 to a eonipressor t t. Alter being eompressed the gases pass into a storage ehamber 15 provided with a pressure gage it so that a steady pressure may he maintained upon the gases by the eompressor. Passing lrom ehamher 13 through pipe 17. the gases pass into |)ttt'll)lttllt)t 18. This preeipitator comprises a pipe 1!). prel'erably brass or other non-magnetie material. a set of preferably alternating eleetro-maguets 2t) surrounding the pipe to set up a magnetie field within it. Direetly beyond magnets 20 is loeated a pair of eleetrieal diseharge plates 21 eonneeted to an induetion eoil. or other high tension machine (not shown). tor the. purpose of main- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 6, 1908.
taining an eleetrie discharge aeross the gap between the plates. Beyond the discharge plates pipe Lt) narrows down, as at 22. and is eontrolled at this point by a valve 2 Direetly beyond valve 22-) aml on the eonstrieted part of the pipe is a seeond set. (it elee-tro magnets 2+. also preferably alternating. Pipe 19 widens out beyoi'id electromagnets 24 and is provided with a seeond pair of diseharge plates 27 preferably eonneeted to the same source of eleetriea l. energy supply as plates 21. Dow'nu'ardly inclined spout it) on the enlarged end o'tthe pipe eoinpletes the apparatus.
The operation of my proeess is as followsz--fiteam is generated in boiler l and admitted to furnaee It in the proper volume as determined by the eapaeity oi the apparatus and as the experienee ol the operator dietates. The temperature of t'uruaee I) is normally about 2000 I.. and the steam is highly superheated in passing through elay pipes t. This superheated steam passes immediately through the heated ehareoal or earhon t) in retort T. and the oxygen ol the steam combines with the earhon and leaves the hydrogen free. as far as ean he aseertaiued. as t'ollows:-
This reaetion may he atl'eeted by the leakage of loreign gases from the atmosphere into tl apparatus. but. unless the leakage is ol large proportions. the reaetion is substantiall as above represented. The temperature of the ehareoal is approximately that of its ineandeseeut heat. and. on aeeount o'l' this high temperature and the exeessive presenee of the earbon. (O is formed rather than t,(). The mixture of gases. ('0 aml ll. passes off through pipe 11 to eondenser 1'3 where it is eooled to pass into the eompressor. The eompressor operates to plaee the mixture of gases under 1 pressure of lTOHl 3-30 to (it) pounds per square ineh and they are stored in ehamher if) under that pressure. The mixture of gases then passes through the preeipitato' and is suhjeeted alternately to the inl'lueuee ol magnetie lields and eleetrieal diseharges. The lirst magnetie field is -formed by magnets 20 and the mixture of gases passes through this field and then through the eleetrieal discharge between plates 21, whieh, in the present. plant, dismomma ross a throo inoh gap 'lho root tho pipo is thou om-ountorod tt's l'orood through tho small spaoo by ralro 21; and noxt through tho tguots fi l.
