APPLIOATION FILED DEO.22,190B.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.-
2 SHEETS-SHEET 1.
Q/Vitwzoozo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH CONWAY, 0F AUSTIN, MINNESOTA.
POST-SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH CONWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Mower and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fences and has special reference to devices employed in the formation of posts to be used in connection with the same.
An object of the invention is to construct a device for pointing the lower extremities of the posts without the necessity of chopping the same by the use of a hand tool.
Another object of the invention is to construct a device which is provided with means whereby the work may be accomplished by the employment of a horse.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be used in connection with posts of various sizes and which is provided with means for automatically feeding the posts into the sharpener.
The invention has for a still further object the provision of a post sharpener which is simple in construction, strong and durable and one which can be economically manufactured.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device, Fig. 1 is a detailed sectional view of the sharpener employed in connection with the device.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 designates a rectangular frame which is apertured at the upper extremity thereof into which is positioned a shell 11 of inverted conical formation which is provided at one side with a longitudinal slot formed therein. The shell 11 carries a blade 12 which extends through the slot formed in the side thereof and which is adjustably secured thereto by means of the set screws 13, which are passed Specification of Letters Patent.

through longitudinally formed slots in the opposite extremities of the blade 12. The frame 10 is provided with a laterally extended beam 14 which is rigidly secured thereto and which carries at its outer ex tremities standards 15 and 16. The standards 15 and 16 are reinforced by the braces 17 disposed upon the opposite sides thereof a short distance from their lower extremities and which extend downwardly and outwardly therefrom where the braces are scoured to the outer extremities of cross beams 18. The upper extremities of the standards 15 and 16 are provided with a cross arm 19 which extends centrally over the frame 10 and which is centrally provided with a threaded flanged sleeve 20 which rotatably carries a feed screw 21. The feed screw 21 depends centrally over the frame 10 and is provided at its lower extremity with a cylindrical cap 22 for the reception of the upper extremity of a post 23. The cap 22 is pro vided with external threads upon which is engaged a collar 21 employed for the purpose of forcing the dogs 25 inwardly to engage the sides of the post 23 to securely hold the same in position.
For the purpose of rotating the post, a beam 26 is employed which is provided with a chain 27 at its inner extremity which is secured about the post 23 to rigidly hold the same and which is centrally supported by a wheeled frame 28 swivelly connected thereto. A swingletree 29 is disposed upon the outer extremity of the beam 26 to which a horse is adapted to be attached for the purpose of rotating the beam 26.
The operation of the device is as follows: A post is positioned in the upper extremity of the shell 11 and the cylindrical cap 22 is drawn downwardly into engagement with the upper end of the post 23 when the collar 24 is rotated and fed downwardly upon the dogs 25 which are caused to engage in the sides of the post 23. The chain 27 is now secured about the post and the beam 26 is rotated causing the post 23 to rotate and be contacted with the edge of the blade 12 thereby cutting the corners of the same. As the post 23 is rotated the feed screw 21 is also turned and caused to travel downwardly forcing the post 23 farther into the shell 11 until the same has reached a predetermined distance to properly point the post The beam 26 is made of sufficient length to produce the leverage necessary for the smooth rotation of the post 23 and the standards and 16 are positioned apart at a sufficient length to admit of the passing of the beam 26 therebetween during the operation of the device.
hat is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a sharpener, a frame disposed about said sharpener for supporting the same, a feed screw mounted above saidsharpener, a cap carried by said screw for engagement over the upper extremity of a post and adapted to feed the same downwardly into said sharpener and a beam detachably se- "-11 cured to said post for rotating the same.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a sharpener disposed centrally in said frame, standards upwardly extended from the opposite sides of said frame, a cross beam disposed upon the upper ends of said standards, a feed screw vertically disposed centrally of-said cross arm for supporting and feeding apost in said sharpener, a beam disposed at one side of said post, a chain carried by said beam for engagement with said post, a wheeled frame disposed centrally beneath said beam for supporting the same and a swingletree mounted upon the outer extremity of said beam.
3. In a device of the character described the combination with a sharpener to engage about a post, a beam arranged to be detachably secured to said post for rotating the same and a feed screw mounted above said said frame, a beam laterally extended-from said frame, standards positioned at the opposite extremities of'said beam, a cross arm disposed upon the upper extremltles of sa1d standards, a feed screw vertically disposed centrally of said cross arm, a-oapmounted upon the lowerextremity of-said-feed screw, a collar disposed in threaded engagement about said cap, a plurality of dogs-pivotally depended from said cap for engagement with said collar to impinge the same against a post positioned in said cap and a beam detachably secured to said post for rotating the same.
5. In a post pointer, the combination with a sharpener for engagement withthe lower extremity of a post, a=beam adapted to be detachably secured to said post for. rotating the same and a. cap disposed above said sharpener for engagement. overv the upper extremity of a post to force said post downwardly into said sharpener.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature, in presence of twowitnesses.
