COIN-FREED LOCKING DEVICE FOR TELEPHONE APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 28, 1909.
Patented Sept. 28, 1909.
Serial No. 474,695.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN JANKE, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and resident of Halberstadt, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin Freed Locking Devices for Telephone Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved coinfreed locking device for telephone apparatus, which is shown on the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the same, partly in section, Fig. 2 is a plan of the mechanism of the same, Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the coin receiver, Fig. 4 is a further sectional plan through the coin receiver on the line C-D of Fig. 5, which is a vertical section on the line AB of Fig. 4. I
The apparatus comprises the coin receiver 5 mounted on a base plate and provided with the coin opening or slot 0. Through the coin receiver passes a shaft a to which by a lever arm (Z a cap 6 is fixed which in locked position covers the hook f.
In the open position of the cap 0 a spring pawl y' passes behind the projection of a disk 72, fixed on the shaft a, the disengagement of said pawl, for the purpose of libcrating the shaft a, being efifected by a strap k which is loosely arranged below the hook f on an axle Z and influenced by a spring m. Said strap is, upon hanging the hearer g on the hook 7, moved back by the hearer into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby the spring pawl 11. pivoted to said strap effects a rotation of the ratchet wheel 0 which movement is by toothed wheels 1" transmitted on the axle p and the spur wheel .9 so that the pawl 21, whichgears with said spur wheel is turned on the fulcrum 11 which is also the fulcrum for the spring pawl j whereby the same is disengaged from the disk It so that the shaft a is under the action of the spring m allowed to return into the locking position. The pawl u is under the influence of a spring 6 which is fixed at o.
The turning of the shaft (4 for liberating the hook f is not possible before a coin is inserted in the slot 0. This being done, a hand lever 1, which is loosely arranged on the shaft on and guided in a slot 2 of the coin receiver 5, serves for turning the shaft a.
The coin 3 (Fig. 5) inserted in the slot 0 serves for coupling the lever 1 with the shaft a. For this purpose below the lever 1 another lever 4 (Fig. 5) is arranged, which is keyed on the shaft 64 and carries at its underside a pin 5 (Figs. 4 and 5). Said pin engages in the arrested position of the shaft a recess 6 in a balance member 7 having two inclined planes and which is suspended from a bolt-8 and influenced by a spring 9 which tends to press the balance member 7 always against the coin abutment 10. The coin after being inserted in the slot 0 falls first through a slot 11 in the lever 1 onto the right inclined plane of the balance member 7 (Fig. 5). Upon the lever 1 being turned in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 3, the coin 3 arrives with its upper edge below a guiding ledge 12 (Fig. 5) whereby the balance member 7 is pressed downward in the direction of the arrow. The hitherto arrested lever 4 is liberated and caused to move with the coin in the direction of the arrow whereby also the shaft a is turned. The coin, iaving fulfilled its object, slides further along a rail 13 until it falls at the end of the latter into the coin collector. At the end of said movement also the pawl j has arrived behind the projection of the disk 72, and arrested the shaft a. This being eifected, the handle or lever 1 jumps under the influence of its spring 14 back into its initial position.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a coin freed locking device for telephone apparatus, in combination, the coin receiver, a spring-pressed shaft located in said receiver, an integral arm on the projecting part of said shaft, a cap on said arm to cover the bearer hook of the telephone apparatus and thus to lock the same, means to engage the lower end of said shaft to keep the same in unlocked position said means being adapted to be again disengaged from said shaft by the hearer of the telephone apparatus upon hanging the same on its hook, and the coin freed mechanism in said coin receiver consisting of a springpressed loose hand lever on said shaft proecting from sald recelver and having a slot for the rece tlon of a com a fixed lever on said shaft, and a springpressed balance my hand in the presence of two subscribing member to normally engage said fiXecl lever Witnesses.
and desi 'ned upon operation of said hand lever to Ebuple both levers through the me- HERMANN JANKE' 5 dium of the coin inserted, all for the pur- WVitnesses:

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set Mrs. LANGE.
