My invention relates to elevators and it has t'or its object to' provide iiii'pi'ovenients whii'h may be iised on elevators or for other purposes. ln my elevator' l provide a carriage, a frame. being' provided to travel in 'fe'iiides in the carriage, a yoke being' disposed 'in the 'ti-aine` two clamps being' p ivoted to ilihefyoke," the clamps being' also pivoted to `the frame, and means being' provided to liinit the niovementot' the yoke and to niove 'the l'raine relatively to the carriage.

In using my invention, as for instance in an elevator, it will be seen that on any breakage of the cable 3), the trames l?) will be free to inove upwardly and will be directed in this direction by the springs Q5), and inasniuch as the trames 12% travel in the Kguides l2 which move upwardly toward the standai'ds 1. the trames '13 will travel toward t-lie standards, but they will be substantially pai'- allel thereto during their iiioveiiientainasmuch as the 'frames travel in `guides not only at their top but. also nair their bottoms. During -this movement 'ot the trames 1?), the supporting' bar 30 `has been moved downwardly, thereby causing' the heads 3G ot' the rods 35 to move toward the lower surface, ot' the carriage 8, which action as has been stated, compresses the springsv 37 and prevents any yrapid movement of the clamps 18 which miglfit canse a shock to the operating mechanism or to thesti'ucture to which it may be secured.
