CALORIC CL'BLCUIT-BREAKER.
Specification .of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '21, 1909.
lppiication'filed March 9, 1909. Serial No. 482,239.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. W'oonwon'rn, .a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Caloric Circuit-Breakers, of which thejfollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to circuit-breakers of the type in which the expansionof a wire traversed by a portion of the main line current controls the opening of such main line erated devices.
[without having recourseto mechanically opand simplify theico nstruction of caloric ci-rhereinafter set forth.
form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is;
an elevation partly in section of one embodiment of my invention and Fig. 2 is a planview .of one form of arc-breaker that may with binding posts '13 B for connecting the f circuit-breaker in the main line. I a
which 1) is stationary and 'F is movable,j which are connected with the main l ne terminals. The stationary contact member D1 material.
G is a tube provided with spring c'li s adapted to embrace the lower 1 art 0'' thef contact member F. The spring 1s secured in any suitable manner to the tube G and to the upperportibn of the contact member Ff so that when, by means of the arm J extending through-a slot in the casing, the members 1* and D are placed in contact, the spring I tends toseparate the the line circuit.
same and thereby open nected l?! the flexible conductor 6 with the L is a latch arranged to hold the member F in contact with the member D by taking in the her F.
O 0 represent a suitable thermally actuated cevice arranged so that the passage ofia groove near the upper end of the .mexnj predetermined amount of current ,there-g through will cause suflicient expansion to' effect the withdrawal of the latch and thereby open the circuit. In the present instance the said thermally actuated device consists of wires suitably mounted in the casing and connected by the cords W to the cord V which in turn is connected to the toggle leverM, v nd tends to hold the same inthe position shown.
Asuitable resilient mem ber such as the spring N is connected to said toggle-lever and tends to move the same upwardly, so that the saidtoggle is balanced between the action of said spring and the cords connecting it with the thermally actuated device.
While I may employ various forms of connections between thetoggle, which is operated by the expansion of the thermally actuated device (land the latch which holds the p I t g members D and in contact, I have shown In the drawings which accompany and n the accompanyingdrawings an arrangement of link connections, the same consisting of-the link 1 pivoted to the latch and to the link 2;, which in turn is pivoted to the lin'kfi, the upper end ofwhich is connected with one farm of ,the toggle M. A spring 4;
is fixed to the link 3 and serves to hold the free end of the link 2 against said link 3.
I The funotinn. of this com ensating-spring is D and F are two contact members, of i to ,permit aslight later-a movement of the latch fL xto the left when the contact between D and F .is closed and then to force said latch to the rightand into the groove in the upper part .QT' the member F when the same has reached its uppermost position.
' represents a su tably graduated scale wh ch may be placed on the outside of the casing P is a sliding 'contactmember carrying a pointer coiiperatingwith said scale. The sliding contact member regulates, the length of the thermally actuated device." 95
O which is in circuit, in a manner which will be obvious;
A. flexible conductor a was the la't h with one side of the conductor {3 and'the' regulator .P which makes sliding 'contactjioo with the other side of said conductor is can ember 1. throaghtheflsprin clips 7H- A suitable form of arckbreailrerfwhich may be employed in conn ction with the caloric '105 circuit-breaker abote described consists of e d sk S of mica or othe s e material sass-119a to the rocker C, which in turn is ivo ed to the upport Ufare stqps governing the position of 110 said rocker and Y is a pin cooperz-iifing with the projections T T to actuate said rocker in manner which will be obvious.
The operation is as follows: The regulator 55 P is Set so that a certain loml may he carried .l iout actuating; ihe circuit breaker, the
member i is plzu-ezl in. contact with the memher I) and the main line thereby (JlOSQfl. A
certain very small fraction oi the main line 10 current will pass'through the loch L, condoctor a, a portion or the 37 actuated 5 device 0 and back to the roof no by Way l ofthe conductor 2}. as the current rises shoves predetermined value, this value -beioogdetermmed by the position the regulater 1, the expo-nsoil? the thermally acl tnatedl devi e'fi enab s em: I

'lhe latter now raised by the arm J to close the circuit, and held.
