HUGO LEIBE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BURNISHING-MACHINE.
Application filed November 9, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept.. 21, 1999.
Serial No. 461,744.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HUGO LEIBE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burnishing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to improvements in burnishing machines, the object being to provide a device of this characterwhich shall be particularly adapted for use in finishing leather articles.
A further object of my invention is to provide means in the burnishing wheels to prevent heat-ing and burning the leather during the burnishing process, and a further object is to provide means whereby a fairly constant pressure of the burnishing wheels against the leather is automatically maintained regardless of the thickness of t-he leather being finished.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Vith these objects in view my invention consists in a novel formation of the disks or plates of the burnishing wheels, whereby heating of said wheels and the work being finished is prevented, and whereby a high pressure of the work against the burnishing wheels is allowable.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved burnishing machine in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a detail top elevation showing the formation of a burnishing wheel disk.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates the table top and 2 supporting legs therefor'. A shaft hanger 3 is secured to the top 1 by means of a bolt 4 and a vertically disposed shaft 5 is journaled therein and projected upwardly through the top 1. The burnishing wheel 6 composed of perforated disks 7 of liber or other suitable material is secured to the shaft 5 and locked in position by means of the nuts 8. A pulley 9 is rigidly secured to the shaft 5 and is adapted to be driven by the belt 10. The shaft 5 is vertically adjustable by means of the set screws hanger 14, and the burnishing wheel 18 is secured to said shaft. Nuts 19 are'adapted to secure the burnishing wheel 18 in position, which latter is slidable to and from the burnishino' wheel 6. The shaft 17 is vertically adjustable by means of the set screw `2O having a lock-nut 2l to secure the adjustment. A pulley 22 is rigidly secured to the shaft 17 which pulley is adapted to be driven in a direction opposite from that of the pulley 9 by means of the belt 23. A small pulley 24 is mounted at one end of the top 1, and a cord 25 passing over said pulley is connected to the block 15 and is adapted to be pulled by the operator to increase the distance between the burnishing wheels 6 and 18.
Horizontally disposed rods 26 and 27 are rigidly secured in the hanger 3, and a hanger 14 is slidably mounted on said rods. Helical springs 28 and 29 are mounted on the rods 26 and 27 respectively and are adapted to exert a pressure against the hanger 14 in order that the burnishing wheels 6 and 18 may act effectively on the work passing through them. The degree of pressure of the burnishing wheels against the work may be regulated by the adjustable thumb screws 30 and 31 threaded to the rods 26 and 27 respectively. The tendency of the springs 28 and 29 is to force the burnishing wheels 6 and 18 into engagement when no work is passing between them, and to overcome this tendency the threaded rod 32 is provided. Rod 32 is provided with a reduced portion 33 slidably mounted in the shaft hanger 3 and a hand wheel 34 integral therewith. The shaft hanger 14 is tapped to receive the threaded portion of the rod 32, and a lock nut 35 is provided to secure the rod 32 when properly adjusted for any particular work. The rod 32 is provided with a Yshoulder or stop 36 which should be adjusted to abut the shaft hanger 3 to prevent the burnishing wheels 6 and 18 from engaging each other. And it will be seen that any desired spacing may be readily made between the burnishing Wheels 6 and 18 by means of the rod 32. The disks 7 of Which the burnishing Wheels 6 and 18 are composed are provided With a plurality of radial slots 37 which tend to dissipate the heat which factor is a drawback with ordinary burnisher. And since the burnishing Wheels do not heat, the rapidity of the process of burnishing is greatly enhanced. v
1While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved burnishing machine I do not Wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit 0f my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as neuT and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent is:
1. In a burnishing machine, a table having a centrally disposed longitudinally eX- tending slot in its top, a stationary vertically disposed shaft carrying a burnishing Wheel mounted on said table, and a hanger slidably mounted in said slot, a second vertically disposed shaft carryingr a burnishing Wheel rotatably mounted in said hanger and means for exerting yielding pressure on said hanger to move the same and its shaft toward the first said shaft, substantially as described.
2. In a burnishing machine, in combination with a table and supporting legs therefor, a shaft hanger secured to said table, a shaft hanger slidably mounted in said table, vertically disposed burnishing Wheel shafts journaled insaid hangers, a plurality of horizontally disposed rods securedr in said first named hanger on Which rods said last named hanger is slidably mounted, and helical springs surrounding said rods adapted to cause said hangers to approach each other,
`substantially as described.
3,. In a burnishing machine, a table and supporting legs therefor, a shaft hanger secured to said table adapted to carry a burnishing Wheel shaft, a second shaft hanger slidably mounted in said table adaptedv to carry a b urnishing Wheel shaft, means for vertically adjusting said shafts, and a threaded rod and lock-nut secured in said second shaft hanger having a reduced porj tion slidably mounted in said first named Y hanger to limit the movement of said second hanger, substantially as described.
4. In a burnishing machine, a table and supporting legs therefor, stationary and movable burnishing Wheel shaft hangers mounted in said table and burnishing Wheel disks provided with radial slots, substantially as described. Y
YIn testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses.
