CHARLES MELDAU, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STOPPER FOR WASHBASINS, 850.
Application filed January 11, 1909.
'i'o all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES MELDAU, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Nashbasins, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stopper for wash-basins, wash-tubs, bath-tubs, sinks and similar articles in which water is retained for some time and drained off after use.
Heretofore the stoppers or plugs for washbasins and other articles were connected by a chain with a suitable support on the washbasin or other article. The chains are objectionable because they frequently become detached from the plugs or the supports or get in the way so as to pull out the stoppers or plugs from their seats.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved stopper for washbasins and other articles in which the chain is entirely dispensed with and the stopper held in open position, sidewise of the drain-opening, and which closes the drain-opening when placed on its seat in a reliable manner for holding the water and which is readily opened for draining off the water from the wash-basin or other article; and for this purpose the invention consists of a wash-basin or other article, the drain-opening of which is provided with a central guide-piece and a stopper seated in the bushing of the drainopening and provided with a plug at its upper end, a stem being screwed into said plug and guided in said socket and provided at its lower end with an enlarged portion which is bent at an obtuse angle of inclination to the stem so as to permit the dropping of the plug sidewise of the drain-opening when the drain-opening is to be opened.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a wash-basin with my improved stopper shown in position in the drain-opening of the basin, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the improved stopper drawn on a larger scale, Fig. 3 is a detail top-view of the bushing and guidepiece placed in the drain-opening of the basin, and Fig. 4 is a side-elevation partly in vertical section showing the stopper in open position for draining off the water from the wash-basin or other article.

Referring to the drawings, a represents the stopper or plug for a wash-basin or similar article. The plug a is provided with a central button a at its upper end, which is smaller than the plug and arranged close to the body of the plug so as to project as little as possible above the drain-opening Z) of the wash-basin. The circumference of the plug a is made tapering so as to fit into a correspondingly-tapered seat of the bushing (Z, placed in the drain-opening of the basin. The bushing d is provided with a central perforated guide-piece al supported by radial arms d for guiding the stem 6 of the plug a. The upper end of the stem 6 is threaded and screwed into an interior-lythreaded central socket e at the underside of the plug a. The lower end of the stem 0 is provided with an enlarged ball-shaped terminal 6 which is placed at an obtuse angle of inclination to the stem 6, so that when the plug is lifted out of the drainopening it can be swung side-wise of the same over the basin, sink, or other article, so as to rest thereon by the weight of the plug, as shown in Fig. at. The stem 6 is provided, adjacent to the enlarged terminal 6 with a neck 6 of reduced size, which engages the perforated guide-piece d and assists in holding the plug in open position sidewise of the drain-opening. To the upper end of the stem, adjacent'to the underside of the plug a, is attached a fixed collar f which prevents the dropping of the stem through the guide-piece into the drain-opening in case the plug should be accident-ally unscrewed from the upper threaded endv of the stem. When the basin, sink or other article is to be closed by the stopper, the plug is taken hold at the button a and dropped into the seat of the bushing for closing the same; in this position the stopper prevents the draining 0d the water in the basin-tub or other article until the water is desired to be drained off, when the stopper is lifted out of the seat of the bushing (Z and placed in tilted position sidew'ise of the drain-openmg.
The advantages of my improved stopper for wash-basins and the like are, first, that a stopper is furnished which can be used without a suspension-chain; second, that the stopper can be readily taken hold of by its button and placed in closed position in the drain-opening or in position sidewise of the same, in Which latter position it is held by its stem and its guide-piece and by the Weight of the plug; and, third, that the stopper or plug can be supplied at a greatly reduced expense as compared With the cost of the stoppers and suspension-chains heretofore in use. I
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination, with the drain-opening and bushing of a Wash-basin, sink or other article, of a perforated guide-piece in said bushii'ig, a plug to be seated in the bushing, a stem attached 'to the underside of the plug h'ziving an enlarged terminal atfits lower end, said terminal being at an obtuse angle of inclination to the stem for permitting the tilting of the plug into a position sidewise ot' the 'diain-opei'iing'.
2. The combination, with the drain-'opening and bushing of a Wash-basin or similar article, of a plug havi'i'ig a button at its up- 5 per part, and a tapering body, and a central stem attached to the bottom of the plug, said stem'being provided with an enlarged lower end Which is bent at an obtuse angle of inclination to the stem. 1
3. In a Wash-basin, the combination, with r a drain-opening and bushing for the same, the bushing being provided With a tapering seat and a perforated guide-piece, of a plug provided With a button at its upper part, a tapering body fitting in the seat of the bushing, a stem attached to the bottom of the plug and an enlarged terminal arranged at an obtuse angle of inclination to the stem and provided With a reduced neck adjacent to the enlarged terminal.
at. In a wash-basin, the combination, with a drain-o ening and a bushing for the same, the bushing being provided with a tapering seat and a cental perforated guidepiece, of
a plug provided with a button at its upper .1.
part, a tapering body fitting into the seat of the bushing, a stem attached to the bottom of the plug, an enlarged terminal arranged at anangl'e of inclination to th'estem and provided with a reduced neck adjacent to the enlarged terminal, and a fixed collar on the stein adjacent to the under-side or bottom of the stopper.
In testimony, that I "claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
