Description
N. BENJAMIN. Y SPLICE BAR F AIL JOINTS. APPLICATION 1 JAN. 2, 1909.
934,270, I Patented Sept.,14, 1909.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IFIIIII w a H edgcs with the surfaces IIEWTON BENJAMIN, 3F ELMIEA, NEW 'IZOELK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented feept. i4, loos.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, linwron BENJAMIN, of Elmira, in the county of Chemnng and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Splice- Bnrs for Rail-Joints; and i do hereby declare the following to bee full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it nppertains to make and use the some.
My invention relates to an improvement in splice bars for rail joints the object being to provide a bar that may he used either edge up, so that whenv worn, it may he reversed and thus present new surfaces at the points subjected to'the greatest weer.
iVith this end in view my invention con-- szists in a splice oar provided at ench edge with an inclined face adapted to engage the underside oi the head of the rail and an oppositely inclined face adapted to rest on the base of the rail.
My invention further consists in :1 splice bar provided at each edge with an inclined surface adapted to engage the underside of the rail and an oppositely inclined t'nce adapted to rest on the base of the rc il, the sides of body of the bur intermediate its edges being concave. In the accon'ipnnyingd swings. Figure l is :i'view in side elevation showing in iinproved splice bar in position. Fig. :3 is n view in section of same, and Fig. is a view of one of the bars.
1 represents the track rails, and :2 the splice bars connecting the ends thereof. Each splice bar is provided on its opposite 3, inclined to conform to the under surfncc of the head of rail 1, and with the surfaces 4 inclined to conform to the upper surface of the base of the rail. One inclined surface 3 and one inclined surface 4 are on the same side or" the bar at the opposite edges thereofi so that when the bar is in position as shown in Fig. 2, one surface 3 engages the underside of the head, and the other the upper side of the base of the rail, and as these surfaces are oppositely inclined, they etlcct e wedging action against the adjacent ends of the two rails overhipped by the same, and operate to hold the heads of the two rails rigid and the treads thereof in perfect, alinement. When in place a s shown in Fig. 2,
i l l l i i and base of the rail. the
, Witnesses z the upper inclined surf :e l rests in n plane below the lower face of the heud oi the rail, and below the wheel flanges, while the lower inclined surface 3 overhangs the edge oi the base.
The two sides 5 of the bar are conczivcd for the twofold purpose oi reducing the weight and saving-,5 ot' innicrinl. and also for imparting slight resiliency to the bars.
it in the use oi the burs they. or the mils become worn ill or Hliii' the point of juncture of the two rails. or in Fact at any other point. the; can be removed, turned upside down. and two new surfaces pre ented to.
the rail.
The burs '3 nrc secured to the rails l. by hol l in the usual manner.
it is evident that changes in the shape of the parts might be resorted to without dcpuriingr from the spirit ot' ill) invention hence I would have it umlcrst-i-mi-l that ldonot conlinc nrcscli to the exact details shown but consider iyseii at liberty to nmke such chnnges us tuirlutull within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention what i clniin us new and desire to secure by Letters'inlcnin iS2 splice bnr provided on its lop {Hilll. \i, bottom edges with Zlll inclined face adapted i c t the underside of the head of the "ail, (ind an oppositclv inclined face adapted t rest on the base or the rail.
2. A reversible splice bur having an inclined face at each edge to engage the head of n rziih and also having at each edge a face which is inclined oppositciyio the firstmcntioncd inclined faces and located nearer the center of the her than the first-mentioned inclined faces and adapted to engage the base of the rail.
3. A reversible splice bur comprising a body widened at its two edges and provided at each edge with double inclined surfaces adapted to engage, respectively. the head two inclined surfaces of each edge being in different planes.
in testimony whereof, l have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. a
