POST-HOLE AUGER.
esaoea.
' new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Angers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to post hole angers, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a simple and efficient auger which will operate quickly and which will remove the earth from the hole being formed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a post hole auger which can be quickly withdrawn from the hole for discharging the dirt. I
Still another object of the invention is to provide a post hole auger comprising two sections pivot-ally connected together; and connected to pivoted handles by means of which the auger may beturned into the earth and withdrawn and quickly unloaded of the dirt within the auger.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a post hole auger made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an underside plan viewof the head of the auger. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the auger shown in position to dischargethe dirt from the inside of the auger head or bit.
Referring to the. drawing, the numeral 1 designates one section of the auger head-or bit, and 2 is the other section thereofa These sections are each in the form of one half of a cap provided with plain side walls having a clearance projection 3 at the lower edge thereof and a bottom 4, each section of the bottom having an outwardly extending inclined cutting bit 5, said cutting bits being oppositely disposed, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3. An opening 6 is formed in termediate the bits 5. The two sectionsl and 2 are connected together by means of suitable hinges 7, said hinges being con nected to the section 1 by means of two rivets 8 and pivotally connected to the section 2 by means of a bolt or rivet 9. The upper edges of the sections 1 and 2 are cut away on a curved line, as at 10.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd Sept, 1%, 199%,
Application filed October 23, 1908. Serial No. 459,154.
The handle members 11 are pivotally connected to the members 1 and 2 by means of a suitable band or metal strap 12 connected at the top inside the members 1 and 2, said band being composed of two sections, each having an inwardly bent bearing 13 in which the ends of the handle members are pivoted upon the bolt 14, said bolts each being provided with a nut 15. The handle members 11 are provided with the curved port-ions 16 and are pivoted together at 17, the inner faces of said handlesbeing flat, as at 18, and the cross handle 19 having also flat inner surfaces 20 and provided with shoulders 21 against which the inner ends of said handle members abut when the auger head is closed and in position for use.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows :The anger is turned into the ground, and owing to the disposition of the blades or bits 5 the earth is turned into the head until the latter is filled. \Vhen the anger is Withdrawn the dirt may be readily discharged by pulling the handles outward, as shown in Fig. 5, after which the members 1 and 2 are again closed and placed in the auger hole for a second boring.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my anger is simple in construction, will operate efl'iciently in all kinds of soil, can be quickly withdrawn and discharged and is not. liable to get out of order or to require repairs.
I claim The herein described post hole auger comprising two cut-ting sections pivotally con nected together and adapted when operate to turn the dirt within said sections, handle members pivotally connected to said sections and pivotally connected together, said handle members being fiat u on'their inner contacting sides and rounde u on their outer sides,
and said handle mom ers being provided with crossed handles having fiat contacting surfaces and rounded outer surfaces. 1
In testimo y whereof I affix my signature in presence f two witnesses.
