CLOSEl CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1909.
Appncatonnied Aprn so, 1909. seria1 No. 433,200.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Closet Construction, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates particularly to waterclosets of the character' described in my Patent No. 905,539, granted December 1, 1908.
My primary object is to provide simple, cheap and effective water connections for closets of the character indicated.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a broken sectional view illustrating closet-construction embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a plan sectional view taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken elevational view, partly in section, illustrating the connections between an improved pipe-fitting employed and the flush-tanks and closet-bowls; and Fig. 4, a broken plan sectional view, showing a detail of the connections between said improved pipe-tting and the pipes radiating tl'lerefrom.
In the construction illustrated, A, A1 represent alined vertical soil-pipe sections; A2,an interposed soil-pipe fitting having radiating branches A3 provided `with upturned ends; B, closet-bowls grouped about the soil-pipe and mounted on the upturned ends of the branches A3 of the iittingA2; C, C, a series of closet-compartment walls radiating from the soil-pipe section A1 with which they are connected; D, flush-tanks (one shown) supported between the walls C and connected with the bowls B.
The soil-pipe litting A2 is described and claimed in the above-mentioned patent, and it is unnecessary to describe the same in detail in the present application. The bowls B and the compartment-walls C may be of any approved construction.
The tanks D are supported on brackets, or shelves, some distance above the closet-bowls and are grouped somewhat closely about the soil-pipe section A1. The rear upper portions of the bowls B are equipped with pipefittings 2 which contain valves (not shown) which are operated by the seats 3 in a well understood manner. upturned branch l which communicates,
`the soil-pipe section A1.
Each fitting 2 has an through the pipe 5, with the Hush-tank above it; and each fitting 2 also has a downturned branch 6 through which water is admitted to `the liush tank. The drawings illustrate eight closet-bowls grouped about the central soil-pipe, and in the preferred construction the number of {lush-tanks correspond with the number of closet-bowls.
E represents a water-supply pipe which rises between two of the arms A3 of the ysoilpipe tting A2; F represents an improved pipe-fitting which receives water from the supply-pipe E and has connections with the branch-pipes 6. The pipe-fitting F preferably comprises a hollow cast member 7 of `substantially U-form and nipples 8 cast integrally therewith and radiating therefrom. The body 7 of the. fitting is preferably of tubular cross-section, and said body has a base-portion 9 and arms 10 embracing Two of the nipples 8 project from the extremities of the arms 10, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2. The nipples 8 are threaded and equipped with nuts, or glands, 11 through which extend the inner ends of the substantially radial pipes 12. The outer ends of the pipes 12 connect with the inturned elbows 13 ot vertical pipes 14, whose upper ends are provided with collars 15 which are connected, by` nuts 16, with the downturned threaded ends of the branch-pipes, or nipples, 6. In practice, the nuts 16 are made to slip over the elbows 13 in assembling.
rllhe `base-portion 9 of the iitting F is equipped with a hollow internally threaded boss 17 which is connected, by a pipe-section 18, with an elbow 19 with which the upper end of the pipe E is fitted. It will be understood that the pipe-fitting F is supported in a substantial manner through the medium of its connection with the branch-pipes 6 and the supply-pipe E.
In operation, the valves with which the fittings 2 are equipped are opened through water to the tanks D, and the tanks operate to flush the closets in the usual manner.
The construction described is simple, cheapand durable, and the connections may be made expeditiously in the erection of the structure.
The foregoing detailed description has been givenV for clearness of understanding only. Hence, n0 undue limitation should the medium of the seats 3, thereby to admit be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In closet-construction, the combination of a soil-pipe, a plurality of closet-bowls grouped about said s0il-pipe and having outlets communicating therewith, Hushtanks communicating with said closet-bowls, a hollow7 pipe-fitting having arms embracing said soil-pipe and having, also, nipples projecting from the fitting, pipes connected with said nipples and communicating with said Hush-tanks, and a water-supply pipe connected with said pipe-iitting- 2. In closet-construction, the combination of a soil-pipe, a plurality of closet-bowls grouped about said soil-pipe, flush-tanks communicating with said closet-bowls, a hollow-pipe fitting having arms embracing said soil-pipe and having nipples radiating from the body thereof and nipples extending from the extremities of said arms, pipes connected with said nipples and communieating with said flush-tanks, and a water supply pipe connected with said pipe-tting.
3. In closet-construction, the combination of a'soil-pipe, an interposed soil-pipe fitting having radiating arms with upturned eX- tremities, closet-bowls mounted upon the upturned extremities of said arms, flush-l tanks commumcatlng with sald closet-bowls, a hollow pipe-fitting having arms embracing said soil-pipe, and having nipples cast inif tegrally therewith, pipes connected with said nipples and communicating with said flush-tanks, and a water-supply pipe extending between two of the arms of said soilpipe fitting, and connected with said second- 1 branches of said fittings, a curved hollow pipe-fitting having arms embracing said soil-pipe, and having integrally formed nipples, a water-supply pipe connected with said second-named fitting, and pipe-connections between said downturned branches of said first-mentioned fittings and the nipples of said second-named fitting.
