SANDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1909.
Application'filed November 24, 1908. Serial No. 464,336.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,.OSKAR VALDEMAR OLssoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Arlof, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention has relation to improvements in apparatuses for the sanding of car tracks immediately in front of the car wheels.
The apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein- 1 illustrates a section of the car platform in which a tubular casing 2 is secured near the feet of the driver or motor man. In this casing is a vertical bolt 3 longitudinally movable, the lower end of which rests on the one arm 4 of an angular lever 5. The latter one is mounted to rotate upon a horizontal spindle 6 which is fastened under the platform. The other lever arm is by means of a link rod connected with a crank 8 that is socured to the end of an axle 10 going through the lower part of the hopper 9. This hopper being suitably placed in front of the car wheel, is square in section and at the one vertical side provided with an opening closed by a cover (not shown in the drawing). The axle 10 is within the hopper provided with an upwardly turned wing 11 of the same breadth as the hopper inside, the outer or the upward turned side of this wing forming a cylindrical surface 12. This surface constitutes a valve that in the position illustrated in the drawing closes against the chamber above wherein the sand is kept up. A horizontal plate 13 is mounted upon a spindle 14 at the one wall of the hopper in such a way that this spindle 14 is parallel with the axle 10. The plate 13 reaches so far in the hopper that it rests with its former edge on the wing 11 against which wing the sand above is also pressing the plate.
The valve 11 is kept shut by means of a counterweight 16 adjusted to an arm 15 mounted on the axle 10. The valve rests man applies his foot on the bolt 1, the lever arm 4 is pressed downward whereby the axle 10 is turned and opens the valve so that the sand falls down in the lower part ofthe hopper and from here glides through a downward narrow opening in its bottom to a pipe 17 to be distributed to the rails. To prevent that comparatively larger objects, stones and the like be jammed between the side of the hopper and the closing edge of the valve, when this latter is again shut by means of the counter weight 16, the two plates 21 are secured to the inner side of the hopper just above the valve. These plates are slanting downward and inward, so that their lower horizontal edges are at a small distance from the surface 12, and so that the edge of one of them is a little lower than the other one.
These plates 21 thus prevent stones, pebbles and the like to get jammed up between the wall and the edge of the valve. The number of plates may variate so that one, two or more of them are used according to the nature of the sand.
The connecting rod 7 is suitably made in two parts connected to each other by means of a right and left threaded nut 18 for adjusting the valve according to different distances between the hopper and the lever 5.
hat I claim is:
In sanding devices for sanding of car tracks provided with an axle going through the inferior part of a hopper and governable from the drivers place by means of a lever the combination of an upward turned wing secured to the axle 10 and a plate hinged to the inner side of the hopper and with its opposite free edge resting on the upper surface of the wing, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
OSKAR WALDEMAR OLSSON.
