is-pi voted, .by means of a bolt 99, to an apert-ured lug 100, projecting from the lower right hand side of the section b. The pin .98 on the extremity of the rearward arm 96 loosely engages the recess in the fork 76. The forwardly projecting arm 97 of the angle lever is apertnred at its extremity, to
loosely engage the forward extremity of arod 101, which rod passes through an eye 102 on the right hand handlel, and terminates in a hook.1 03 adjacent to the rearward extremity of the handle 1. Bolted to the downwardly and forwardly projecting tongue 48' is a fiat bar 104, oblong in cross section extending laterally toward the left, but twisted through an arc of 180 degrees adjacent to the tongue, so that its laterally projecting portion 105 has its broader surfaces extending transversely downwardly and rearwardly.
Slipped over the outer extremity of the bar 105 is the marker arm 10G, having-its forward end terminating in a pair of aperturcd collars 107, 107,11aving'recesses therein of such a configuration that the said marker will extend downwardly and rearwardly front the bar 105, and at the same time closely engage the bar to prevent any V61- tically swinging movement thereofcesscs in the apertured collars are doubled in order that the marker arm may be turned over to engage the bar, should it be desired to have the marker extend upwardly out of contact with the ground instead of downwardly. The marker armis fastenedto the bar 105by means of a pin 108, passing through apertures 109 therein. A chain 110,
fastened to an intermediate portion of. the marker arm, connects the samewith a cross bar 111, upon which the.cl 1ainis wound.
The marker arm 106 terminates at its rear end in rearwardly and vertically projecting blades spread to forn'ra ininiature plow for scoring the ground.
The re- The wheel 94,, journaled on the rearward extremity of thc'shaft 91 on the exterior of the nipple (34-, comprises a hub portion 120,
each end having a pair of transverse recesses 121, 121 through either panof which may pass a pin 122, to secure the same to the shaft 91, and a plurality of outwardly ex-v tending members, each member comprising a longitudinal web 123 and -a transverse blade 12% arranged at right angles thereto.
SSome of the outwardlyextending members may alsohave another longitudinal web'l25- and transverse-blade 126 at theside thereof 5 and integral therewith, which bladesare arranged in. different planes from the preceding blades, so that the rotationof the wheel 94- will present in one transvers'e' plane an entirely different arrangement of blades than that presented in a parallel transverse plane...
The hub portion 120, being recessed at each shaft 91.
' Theoperation of the agatei as. ialy s-w end, is reversible on theextremi y of-the' the cut-off every timeasin'g e seed is dropped thereon is'substitutcd,"wh1ch will cause the Referring to Figs. 6, 7, and 15, the index pointer is turned along the scale on the edge of-the plate 37, to indicate the character of the seeds, and whether they are to be sown in hills or drills; for instance, should it be desired to sow parsnip seeds, the pointer would be turned to 34: for hills, as is indicated in the'first column after the word opening for 'the discharge into the chute,
permitting one seed only to pass there through from. the agitator chamber, the operation of which will be hereinafter described.
l i Thebottom of the chute is closed by the cut-off 87 ,wh-ich is operated by the blades on the hub of the wheel 94 tripping past the laterally projecting tongue on the horizontal arm 85,- causing the cut-olf'to swing rearwardly against the resistance 'of the spring 84 011 the pin 83' as 'a center. vertical plate 88 contains.- a slot, in which the horizontal arm 85 is uided-againstlat- "eral movement. The blades on the wheel 94 are arranged around the hub accordin fto a standard scale so that,if it is desired to drill, a wheel havingpenou h blades to trip seeds toloe sown at a certain distance apart.
Should it. be desired to hat the seeds in hills instead of drills, a w eel having a less number of blades is utilized, thus leaving ternately, it is necessary to take .the wheel time for several seeds to accumulate on'the cut-01f, before the sameis-tripped, andthen to-drop them all-in a pile on the ground.
-As"hereinbefore stated, I "may employ awheelhaving apeculiar construction, 1n that the blades. extending-therefrom are arranged in two sets, side by side, theone sidecontaining a certain number of blades, and the other side containing a different number of blades, and inorder to-use' the two sides aloif the end of the shaft by removing the pin and placing the wheelback again reversed; as the wheel revolves, it causes the shaft geared thereto'torevolve and rotate the agiv tator blades inside of the agitator chamher, which opens into the lower end of the chute, the revolving shaft is extended through this chamber and likewise causes the revolution of-the wheel on the extremity thereof. As heretofore stated, when it is desired to sowa certain character of seeds in' hills or d1'ills, the index is 'set as heretofore Texptined, wlnch'c'auses; the cover to move so I that the agitator chamber will present a rectangular orifice having a recess in thelower end thereof. As the agitator wheels re-' volve, the seedscome down fr'omthe hopper The manner hereinbefore described. When the planter is pushed forward over the field, the plow digs a furrow throwin dirt u on each side thereof, and ironing t 1e same own with the under surfaces. In the meantime, the seed or seeds have been dropped therein, and theeoverer blades 50, 50 draw the thrown 'up sides together, closing the furrow, which is rolled down by the concave roller passing over the closed furrow.
If it is desired to convert the device into a wheel hoe cultivator and plow, the bolt 44. is removed, separatin the wheel arms and gearing mechanism etweenthe same from the rest of the planter, and a wheel hoe cultivator and plow, having a box-like structure, as described herein, is fitted between the wheel arms and the bolt replaced. Y When it is desired to obtain access to the feed mechanism, the rear part of the hopper .Although I have shown only one form in which this invention may be constructed, it is obvious that many changes might be made in the details of the construction illustrated without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the appended claims.
