HARVEY W. REMINGTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STRUCTURAL HATCH AND ROOF COVERING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 12, 1909.
PatentedAug. 24, 1909.
Serial No. 471,927.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IARVEY IV. REMING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Structural Hatch and Roof Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in structural hatch and roof coverings, having particular reference to ship and boat hatch coverings.
One object of the invention is the providing of a plurality of transverse supporting members adjust-ably mounted on the body of a ship or boat structure, having movably mounted thereon a plurality of metallic covers provided with reinforcing means across their respective bodies.
Another and further object of the invention is the adaptability of said structure to the roof of a buildin a skylight covering,
1 and the covering of a dome or other diagonally formed structural body.
In the following is described in connection with the accompanying drawings, one embodiment of the invention the features thereof being more particularly pointed out hereinafter in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the structure as applied to a vessel for the purpose of forming a hatch covering; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the structure as applied to a vessel, illustrating the particular formation of a plurality of gutters between the respective hatch covers; Fig. 4; is a cross sectional view of one of the covers or plates illustrating in connection therewith one form of reinforcing means; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device as applied to the roof of a building or other like structure.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
With particular reference to the structures shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, 1 indicates the hold of a vessel or other structural body having sides 2, decks 3, guardrails 4- and side or hatch walls 5. 6 designates strong backs or transverse supporting channel beams formed preferably in a predetermined arch having the ends 7 thereof resting on said hatch walls 5, said beams 6 having riveted thereto on their under sides angle irons 8 the outer faces of said irons 8 being adapted to rest against or engage the interior surfaces of said walls 5, said strong backs being adjustable longitudinally on said walls 5. Hatch walls 5 may have mounted on their top surfaces metallic strips 9 fastened thereto in any suitable manner such as by means of screws, the object of the same being to provide means for protecting the parts of said walls engaging said beams (3, obviating any possible injury to structure supporting said beams. 10 indicates a plurality of metallic plates or covers shaped to conform to the contour of said beams 6, having the respective edges thereof bent down in the form of an angle 11, said angles being adapted to overhang the vertical sides 12 of said channel beams and extend approximately to the upper outer face of said channel, the object of the same being to provide means for prevei'iting water etc., from backing up beneath said plates and falling into the hold of said vessel. Said plates have mounted thereon on their under sides either a single ora plurality of reinforcing T irons or angles 13 fastened thereto by means of rivets or bolts 14. Said irons 13 may be mounted transversely or longitudinally on said plates and also made to conform to the contour of said plates, the ends thereof abutting against said walls 5 preventing in this instance any side movement of said plates, the space between the angles 11 on said beams 6 forming a gutter 15, to convey water and other substances from the face of the assembled structure.
Referring to Fig. 5 the device as shown therein comprises a plurality of plates 16 provided with angles 17 on the edges thereof, mounted on diagonally set channel beams 18, said plates 16 being reinforced longitudinally thereof by means of T irons or angle beams 19 and fastened thereto by means of bolts or rivets. The space between said angles 17 in said beams 18 form suitable gutters 20 for the purposes as heretofore described.
The structure as above described is particularly applicable for use in constructing sky lights, dome roofs and other bodies requiring portable and removable covers.
It is obvious that the device as herein shown and described may be varied in many Ways particularly in shape, size and materials used Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
\Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r l. A device of the character described comprising a supporting body, a plurality of transverse arched channel :beams mounted thereon, adapted for longitudinal adjustment on said body, and a plurality of plates shaped to conform to said beams providedwithm'eans engaging said beams, and means for reinforcing said plates across the respective faces thereof.
2. A device of the character described including a main supporting body, a Wall or coaming mounted on said supporting body,
a plurality of arched channel beams loosely mounted on said coaming, angle plates mounted on said beams adapted to engage the interior'sides of said coaming, a plu rality of sheet metal plates arched to conform to the shape of said channel beams, angles formed with said plates adapted to engage said beams, and a plurality of "T irons mounted on the under surface of said plates.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HARVEY W. REMINGTON.
