TUNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. DUNN, 0F NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
WALL- DECORATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of entucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in i lall Decorations, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that certain novel construction to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed, in which cove molding for wall ceilings may be provided in such lengths as desired, and which can be readily and easily secured in place, without strain upon the plaster.
My invention consists of a hollow form of paper material molded to shape, with attaching faces for securing same to the wall and ceiling at right angles to each other.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of my improved molding, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the corner of a room, with my molding in place.
A sheet of suitable paper material of the requisite thickness is formed on a suitable mold, into a hollow tube of the shape shown in Fig. 1, in which 1 is the curved face to form the cove, and 2 and 3 are the inner faces formed at right angles to each other, the edges of the sheet of paper board being overlapped and pressed together at the back at 4. The paper form after being molded into shape is dried, shellacked and varnished, and the curved face which forms the cove is tinted or colored to match the colors of the wall and ceiling, the molding secured in place by the small screws or nails 55, which are secured through the edges of the molding at convenient distances apart, and into the lath work or framework of the ceiling 6 and the side walls 7-7 of'the room. In order that this construction of cove molding may also be used. for the application of plaster, I cut slots 8, 8 in the paper sheet before forming same into a mold. These slots allow the plaster to form a key behind the front face of the molding and these secure the plaster in place.
As the molding is constructed of hollow paper material, it is exceedingly light, and easy to handle, and conveniently cut into such lengths as may be desired, and as the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 30, 1908.
Serial No. 42 2204.
attaching faces are molded at exact right angles to each other, the molding can be readily and accurately fitted in place, While the attaching screws or nails securing same to the wood work obviate any strain upon the plaster of either the ceiling or wall, a result which cannot be attained with cove moldings of plaster, constructed in the usual way.
Heretofore where moldings have been formed of papier mach or like material, wooden strips have been provided to stiffen the material at the edges, and as the walls to which the moldings are to be attached are frequently out of true, the wooden strips are too stiff to conform to untrue surfaces and they soon work loose. Whereas by constructing my molding in the shape of a hollOW tube, with attaching faces at right angles, and connecting these faces together at the rear, I give a stiffness to the molding which renders it unnecessary to use wooden strips, and at the same time the paper material is sufliciently elastic to conform and adhere to untrue wall surfaces Without working loose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a cove molding formed of suitable paper material, pressed or. molded into shape, with attaching side faces in planes at right angles to each other, and with the paper material joined together at the rear to form a hollow tube in a plane at an angle to the planes of the attaching faces, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a cove molding formed of suitable paper material, pressed or molded into shape, with attaching side faces in planes at right angles to each other, and with the paper ,material joined together at the rear to form a hollow tube in a plane at an angle to the planes of the attaching faces, said molding being formed with openings at suitable intervals in the front face thereof, for securing the plaster thereto, substantially as described.
' GEORGE W. DUNN.
