WEET-REPJENISHING LGOll/.
To all whom tt 'may concern:
Be it known that l, Erni H. Bron, a citizen of the United States, residing` at lVorcester, in the county ot Worcester and State ot' yHassachusetts, have invented certain nenT Achange shuttle boxes at one end ot' the loom,
and a magazine for fillingl carriers of a diterent color or character at the other end of the loom, which lling carriers are automatically supplied to the shuttle at the magazine end of the loom on the substantial or practical exhaustion of the filling in the active shuttle.
The object of my invention is to improve upon the construction ot the magazine, and the transferring mechanism in looms of the class referred to, and my invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my improvements as 'ill be hereinafter fully described.
ln my improved lilling1 carrier magazine, which in this instance is made for a series of bobbins ot tour ditierent colors or characters, l provide a series otl bobbin cases, each of which cases is adapted to hold tour bobbins and terms a link or the magazine chain. Said magazine chain is made up of a certain number oli links, in the present case ten, which are carried around sprocket Wheels which are looselyT mounted on a horizontally extending shaft on a stand, Which projects rearwardly from the breast beam above the path ot the lay. The downwardly hanging' portion ot the magazine chain is preferably carried around a suitable guiding' device just above the lay and the stationary shuttle box on the end ot the lay, so that each ot the tour filling` carriers or bobbins in the bobbin case may be directly transferred into the active shuttle on the substantial exhaustion ot the 'lilling` therein. The downwardly hanging arms, on which the magazine chain is carried are loosely and pivotally mounted on the horizontally extending shaft of the sprocket Wheels, and are adapted to swing above the lay, and vmeans are provided to retain` any one of the four bobbins in the bobbin case in position underthe transferrer arm, When a transfer of a bobbln orlling Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 15, 1908.

The rod 27 extends loosely through a boss on a bracket 28 on the loom arch, see Fig. 2, and its other end connected, through a chain 29, with a double sheave 30 loosely mounted on a stud 30 on an operating lever, to be hereinafter described. A second chain 31 is connected, in this instance by a link 32, to the first mentioned chain 29, and passes around a guide sheave 33, and in this instance is connected by a link 34 with a chain 35, which passes over 'guide sheaves 36, and a second guide sheave 37 at the opposite end of the loom, and is connected through a link 38 with the box operating lever 39, see Fig. 1, which is of the usual construction and operation.
The Voperation of the box lever 39 acts, through the chain connections to the swinging frame 23, to move said frame into Jfour swinging' frame 23 with the lowest bobbin case 2l will move toward the front of the loom, until the collar 27 on the rod 2T engages the bracket 28, and stops the movement of said rod.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, the bobbin ll in the rear of the bobbin case 2l, or the fourth bobbin, is shown in position under the transferrer arm.
The filling detector shown in the drawings, Fig. S, to detect the substantial exhaustion of filling in the active shuttle, corresponds to the lling detector shown and described in my pending application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 419,S50.
The shuttle l() may be a self-threading shuttle of any7 usual construction, and has combined therewith my filling detector mech anism, comprising' a rocking shaft or rod ilO, which extends in the direction of the length of the shuttle, and is located in suitable bearings along the baci; wall of the shuttle, at the rear of the bobbin ll. On the rod 40, near the bohbin head of the spindle, is secured a feeler pad or plate Li', to engage the filling il on the bobbin ll, and near the other end of said rod ett), at the bobbin tip end of the shuttle, is a blocl; 40, which may be termed an actuator, and extends within an opening or recess i0 in the rear portion or wall of the shuttle l0. T he opening or recess l0 in the rear wall of the shuttle l() extends to the end portion of the shuttle, see Fig. 8. The pad etO engages the filling ll on the bobbin ll, and is yieldingly held in engagement therewith by the weight of the actuator 410.
As the filling il is drawn off of the bobbin ll, and the bobbin is practically or substantially exhausted of illing, the pad 40 moves toward the bobbin, and the shaft or rod O is rocked, and the actuator 40 is moved into its operative position in the path of the end of an arm 4l, which in this instance is pivotally mounted on a stud on the lay beam. The arm l-l is connected by a rod i3, with a lever del, which has a hub #i-al, secured by a setscrow d5 on the upper end of a vertically extending shaft 46 having bearings in the lay beam. @n the lower end of the shaft 46, secured by a pin et?, is the hub 48 of a lever S carrying a pin etS thereon, `which is adapted to engage the notched end i9 on a lever if), having a hub i9 secured on the lower end of a vertically7 extending shaft 50, mounted in suitable bearings ol on the front of the lay beam. On the upper part of the shaft 50 is adjustably secured, by a set screw the hub 53 of a bunter 33%, which extends upwardly, see Fig. 7, with its upper end in the path of and adapted to engage the rounded grooved extension oil on a latch Sei, see Fig. S, which latch is pivotally mounted on a stud on the downwardly extending arm 5G of the transferrer 56, which is pivotally mounted on a stud 5T on the stand 13, see Fig. 7. An upward extension t of the transferrer arm 56, extends between two set screws 58, which ma;7 be adjusted as desired, and limit the rocking movement of the transfer-rer arm 5G. A helically coiled contraction spring 59 attached at one end to the lever Llef), and at its other end to a pin (SO on the lay, see Fig. 8. rfhe spring acts to yieldin ly move the lever et() toward the lever 4S.
in Fig. the lever if? is shown in its locked position, by the engagement of the pin 5LB with the notched end i9 on said lever 49. in this position, the bunter 5?; is held out of the path of the latch 5i of the transferring mechanism, as shown in Fig. i), and the loom operates in the normal wa g but when the i'illing ll on the bobbin li is practically or substantially exhausted, as shown in Fig. 8, the engagement of the actuator i0 of the filling detecting mechanism, with the lever Vil, will, through linlt i3 and arm iet, move the lever S to disengage it from the notched end of the lever if), and allow the helically coiled contraction spring to operate to move the bunter into the path of the latch of the transferrermechanism, so that on the forward movement of the lay, the transferrer 5G will be operated, to transfer a fresh bobbin from the magazine into the active shuttle, as shown in Fig. S. Un the next backward strolte of the lay a down 'ardly extending boss 48 on the lever y-l-S will e engaged by the inclined or cam .-1'/ l'. n' Y shaped end or of an arm nl, see Pigs. r and 8, secured to and extending out from the loom side l. The engagement of the boss 8W with the cam shaped or inclined end of the arm Gl, will move the lever t8 back to the position shown in Fig. 9, and cause the pin -l-S thereon to engage with the notched end 44) ou the lever l5?, and hold the bunter 53 in its inoperative position shown in Fig. D.
After the bobbin 1l has been transferred, the transferrer arm 5G will be moved to its inoperative position, through the action of the helically coiled torsion spring (S2, see Fig. i. The double sprocket wheels l?) and l?? then have to be moved one-sixth of their revolution, to carry a new bobbin case Q1 to its lowest position, see Figs. i, 3, and On the bottom shaft l2 is fast a cani (3B, which is adapted to operate a lever (ffl, which is pivotally mounted on a stud (25 on the loom side l, and has a pin 6i thereon which extends in the. path of and is adapted to be engaged by the periphery of said cam (33.
The lever Gi has attached thereto one end of lever 64 in engagement. with the cam 63. The lever 64 has an elongated slot 64 therein, in which is adjustably secured the lower end of a rod or connector 67; the upper end of the rod or connector 67 is pivotally connected with one arm of a lever 68, which is centrally and pivotally mounted on a stud 69 on the loom arch 3. The other arm of the lever (38 has a wedged shaped end 68 secured thereto, see Fig. 3, which is adapted to be engaged by the recessed end 7G on the latch 70, which is pivotally mounted on a stud 71 on the stand 13, to lock the lever 68, as shown in Fig. 3.
The downwardly extending extension 7 0 on the latch 70, has one end of a helically coiled spring 72 attached thereto; the other end of said spring 72 is attached to the stand 13, see Fig. 3. The extension on the latch 70 extends in the path of and is adapt ed to be engaged by an extension 56 on the transferrer arm 56, see Fig. 5, to move said latch 70 away from the end 68 on the arm 68, against the action of the spring 72, on the downward movement of the transferrer arm, as shown in Fig. 5, and allow the lever 68 to be moved, through the cam 63, lever 64, and rod 67. To the lever 68 is attached the lower end of a link or connector 73; the upper end of said link or connector 73 is pivotally attached to one arm of an angle lever 74, see Fig. 5. The angle lever 74 is pivo-tally mounted on a stud 7 5 on the swinging frame 23, and the other arm of said angle lever 74 is connected by a link or connector 76 with a lever 77, which has a hub 77 loosely mounted on the stud 15. The lever 77 has an elongated head 77 see Fig. 6, in which is yieldingly held, by a helically coiled expansion spring 78, a pin 79, the enlarged end 79 of which is adapted to engage the ratchet portion 19 of the sprocket wheel 19, see Figs. 5 and 6, and cause the sprocket wheel 19, and the sprocket wheel 19, to rotate one-sixth of their revolution, when the lever 77 is to be moved from the position shown in Fig. 5, to the position shown in Fig. 3. An extension 23a on the swinging trame 23 limits the upward movement of the lever 77, see Fig. 2.
The rearwardly extending arm of the lever 68 has attached thereto a roll 68, see Fig. 5, which travels in a cam shaped slot 80 in the upper end of an upright lever 80, which is pivotally mounted at its lower end on a stud 81 on the loom trame, see Fig.` 1, to move said lever toward the magazine. The lever 8O carries the sheave 30, over which the chain 29 passes, see Fig. 1. which chain acts to )osition the swinging frame 23, and the bob in cases 21, as above described.
In rotating the sprocket wheels 19 and 19a, and operating the magazine chain, it is desirable to have the swinging frame 23 moved to its extreme Jfront position, in order to clear the transferrer arm, and through the movement of the lever 80, carrying the guide sheave 30, the chain 29 is slackened, as shown in Fig. 5, to allow the swinging frame 23 to be moved to its eXtreme front position.
The bobbin or filling carrier cases 21, and the holding devices for the bobbins are shown in Figs. 10 to 14, inclusive. Each bobbin case 21-is preferably made out of pressed sheet metal, having the rear wall 21a, see Fig. 12, and having the pockets or recessed portions 21a formed therein, for the heads of the bobbins 11, see Figs. 10 and 14. 21b is the front wall of the case for the tips of the bobbins. The front wall 21b has secured thereon the spring clips 21C, to yieldingly hold the tips of the bobbins 11 in place. Two tra-verse plates 21d are used in this instance7 which plates are riveted in a suitable manner to the back and front walls of each bobbin case, to form rigid compartments for the bobbins. The ends of the lling 11 are preferably held or clamped in a coiled spring 82 at the front wall 2lb, from said spring 82 the filling thread passes around a hooked eX- tension on the back wall 21a, and then back to a notch 21e, see Fig. 11, on the traverse plates 21d, for one pair of bobbins in each case. For the other pair of bobbins in each case, the lling 11 passes over a hooked eX- tension 21i on the front wall 21h, see Fig. l1.
