SHEET METAL PACKAGE.

J v INVENTCR WITNESSES ARTHUR R. McARTI-IUR, 0F ELWOOD, ZHDIANA, ASSIGNOR T0 AMERICAN SHEET & TIN PLATE COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHEET-DEBT AL PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 24;, 1909.
Application filed February 17, 1909. Serial No. 478,488.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. MoAn- THUR, of Elwood, Madison county, Indiana,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the corner portion of a package partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the end closures; and Fig. 4 is a partial detail view through the seam.
My invention relates to the class of sheet metal packages, particularly to those employed for shipping packages of sheets or tin plates.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and. easily applied end closure which will be securely held in position by means additional to the mere friction of the sheets thereon.
In the drawing, I show the case as consisting of a metal sheet 2 which is folded back on itself to form the top, the bottom and two sides of the case, its ends being open. The integral connecting portion of this sheet between its to and bottom, forms one integral side wal its edges being seamed together at the opposite side. In the form shown, this opposite side is closed by the portion 3 bent upwardly from the bottom portion 2 of the cover, this portion 3 having a bent back seaming portion 4. The top portion 2 has a bent down seaming portion 5 of greater width than the portion 4 so that it may be bent up inside of it as shown at 6, to form the seam.
To close the ends of the package I provide the closure shown in Fig. 3. This consists of a short sheet having the end portions 7 and the top and bottom portions 8 and 9. At one edge the top portion 8 is provided with a downwardly bent lip 10 which overlies the end portion of the seaming part 4. This lip on each end closure is located at the seamed side of the envelop. When the seam is formed and the edge portion 6 is turned up inside of the portion 4, it also incloses this lip portion 10 of the end closure; and holds the end closures securely in place.
The advantages of my invention result from the peculiar end closure which has a portion engaging the seam of the envelop or cover to hold it in place. These end closures are simple and maybe easily and cheaply formed and serve to protect the end edges of the sheets.
The envelop proper may he seamed at both side edges of the pack in which case the end envelop may have lips at both ends or at either end; the cover may be arranged so that its seam or seams are along the end edges of the pack, leaving the side edges open, in which case the closures will be applied to the side edges; and many other changes may be made in the form and ar rangenient of the envelop and package, without departing from my invention.
1 clain 1. A sheet metal enevlop having opposite edges seamed together along one edge and an open end, and a closure for the open end having a portion seamed in with the seam of the cover or envelop; substantially as described.
2. A sheet metal cover or envelop having opposite edges seamed along one side and an end closure having flanges within the cover, and provided with a lip portion engaged in the seam of the cover; substantially as described.
3. A sheet metal envelop comprising a sheet bent back on itself to form the top, bottom and two sides of the package, opposite edges of the sheet being formed for mutual seaming along one side and end closures having inwardly projecting flanges with lips engaging the seam of the cover; substantially as described.
4. A sheet metal envelop having an open side, and a sheet metal closure for said open side, two of the edges of the envelop and one of the edges of the closure being secured together in one seam, substantially as described.
, 5. A substantially U-shaped metal envelop having one side longer than the other and bent transversely to form an end for the envelop, In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set said end being seamed to the end portion of my hand.
the other side of the envelop, and a substantially U-shaped sheet metal closure inserted ARTHUR MOARTHUR' in one of the sides of the envelop and having .Vitnesses:
one of its edges seamed into the seam of the A. J. GRIFFIs. envelop, substantially as described. F. D. BRADLEY.
