Description

P. J. MADDEN. WATER GLOSET. APPLICATION FILED MAY 28, 1906.

WALTER-GLQSEiR Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24; tho-9..
Application filed may 28, 19%. Serial No. sienna Be it known that I, PATRICK J. IVlAnnnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVater- Jlosets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in the features of novelty that are hereinafter dcsc ihed with reference to the drawing, which is n'iade a part, hereof and in which;
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the upper part of a water closet embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rear portion thereof with the flushing tank omitted. Figs. and a are vertical scctious on the lines 3-' and -'l;-l-, respectively, Fig.
It represen s the bowl which they have a seatfashioned on its hollow riin shown at a. v
B is a Wall or other fixed support located at the back of the bowl.
C is a valve device, which is securely fined to the Wall E by any suitable means.
As shown in the drawing, the wall has an opening through which one member of the composite branch 0 of the casing of the valve device passes, incmber having at its for- Ward end a flange 0 which bears against the front side 0' he Wall, and having its rear end tl reacted tor the reception of a clamping nut so that by tightening the out the wait is clamped between it and the flange c,
and. the valve device thereby lirinly supported independently of the bowl. From the outlet openirig of the branch c of the casing a pi c it) of an necessary shape or construction leads to the bowl so as to discharge t-hereinto.
In the valve device shown in the drawinga second branch 0 of the casing is connected by a pipe C- with a thishing tank l (shown by dotted lines) which is air tight and a pipe G leading from any suitable source of water supply communicates with a third hrauch if of the casing. C(Hlll'illll'llt'jfltlOii 'awtw on the branches 1: and 0 oi the casing cunts." 'led by a valve H which seats with the ;'ircssure in the branch 0 and is hold normally seated by a sprng it while comnuinication he. on the-l'u'al'iches c and c" is controlled a alve i seating against the pressure in ll'm branch and held normally unset 1t hy a spring 2". The velvet is carried by a stem J which projects through the end all oi the mining in posipret'erahly l tion to he engaged and operated and the rear end of the stem J is in position to engage the forward end of the stern h of the valve H, so that the scaling inovcinci'it of the valve l is transmitted to the valve H for unseating it. The operation this valve device is full v understood by those skilled in the art.
K a pair ot rigid supporting arms firmly secured to and supported by the wall B or other suitable supporting device which wholly ini'le 'icndent of the bowl. These arms term the direct support for the mechanism for operating the valve stem J, and here it may observed that while the valve operating nieoianisin shown in the drawing and now to Fe des 1i wed is pre'terrct'l, still, in its broadest aspect the invention is not, limited the eto. Un the contrary the conthe valvc-operating mechanism hie of modification without dcon] the spirit oi the invention. Its .i novel characteristics are that it is supported by means iinlepeinleut ot the bowl and that itreacts in one direction against its supgortingg means and in the other direction against the valve stem of a valve device which also supported independently of the bowl so that the howl is who} 3* relieved of strains iiu'idviit to operating the valve.
is shown in the drawing; a part l1, which may he regarded either as a seat of easternarv construction, or as a 'ivcr, hut which is lll'llltitflltlllltflll cttcct. a lever, is tulcrunied or hinged to the supports it. To this end it. is provided with lugs Z perforated for the passage of a shaft it which occupies eyes 0 in the ends ol the arms l: and is held in place hy screws Ni 'lhc lcvcr ii (as it will hereiualtcr he called) is provided also with a pair of pcrroratcd lugs J through which, also, the shaft passer. 'ihcs tugs Z are provided also with {lei orations in the pas sage a fulcrum or pivot pin K which sup ports an eccentric cant t) located in such position that it turns about the axis of move ment of the lever and has a surface 0 which engages an anti-triction rolle carried to the forward cud of the valve stem 5". The cam has a shoulder 0' which is engaged by the Ecvcrl i so that as the lever is moved about; the shaft hi as a 't'ulcruin or axis, the cam surface 0 will force the valve stem inward, thorch seating the valve I and uuscating the valve ll. vVhen the lever has reached the limit of its upward lllUYt'llltHl the antifriction roller carried by the stem J Will have arrived at a depression 0 on the cam and thereby lock the cam in place as against the tendency of the valve stem J to return it to its normal position.
As shown in the drawing the shaft M passes also through an opening 0 in the cam, the opening being elongated in order slot in the cam and to the supports inclependent of the bowl for the lever.
What/I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a bowl, a valve device having a projecting valve stem, a lever, a shaft forming a fulcrum for the lever, a support for to permit a slight movement of the caniensaidshaft, an eccentric cam carried to the 10 about its pivot pin IQ for adgnstmg it by lever and engaging the valve ste1n,sa1 cam means 01'? a set screw P.
I do not claim, broadly, in this application, the general construction and arrangement of the parts, including the eccentric cam carried by the lever L and directly ongaging the valve stem J for operating the said valve stein, this being a part of the subject matter of my application of even date herewith bearing Serial No. 319,102, the invention 01" the present application so far as this mechanism is concerned being limited to the shaft M passing through an elongated being directly interposed between the lever and valve stem and so located that it turns about the axis of movement ofth'e lever, and means for adjusting said cam about an axis at one side of the axis of movement of the lever, said cam having an elongated. slot through 'which the shaft passes.
