Mr [k u .Ja. it, .LLA an Be it known that 1,; ALwrN' SABoR,'acitizen of the United States, residing at St.
and useful Improvements in Bo-Xcs, of which the following is a specification.
'My i-nvention relates to an improvement in boxes or cartons, and the object is toprovide a. box which can be made'of any size and the telescoping sections of the'box con-' uected together against accidental separation of the two sections.
A further object is the fact of having one of the locking means adapted to form a handle for carrying-the boX-orca'rton;
The invention,consists of 'certainnovel features of construction and combinations r of parts which w'ill be hereinafter fully described and "pointed out inthe claims.
In the accompany ng drawings: Figure 1 1s a perspective v1ew;';F1g. 2 1s a longitudinal sectional view; Fig; 3 is a' bottom view;
Fig. 4; is a sectional view disclosing the opening in one side of the inner section of the box; and 5 and B the inner section. The inner section is adapted to be received within the outer section A, the outer section forming the cover of the box. The outer section A is v provided on the upper surface thereof with Ots r Openings 1, 1 and the inner section B is provided with enlarged slots or openings 2 on its upper surface, which are adapted to register with the openings or slots 1, 1. The two sections are-connected together by means of a spring handle 3, which is provided with hooked ends 4. The sides of the handle are pressed together and insorted through the slots 1 and through one of the openings 2- of the members A and B respectively, .and the hooked ends of the handle will engage the body ofthe member B due to the resilient sides ofthe handle. \Vhen the sides of the handle are released after beinginserted through the openings 1 and 2, the hooked ends will spring outward or fromeach other and engage the body of the inner member. The openings 2 of the member B are of greater length than the distance between the outer edges of the two slots 1 in the member A. This permits of the hooked ends being disengaged from the member 13 when it is desired to remove ration oi l Patent. I
"oettienfiled search e, was semi nastiness;
is a modified form of the member -B fromtlie member-A, and the" ends of the handle will engage the body of the member A; and itwill, therefore, be unnecessary torremove the handlefrom the box=member A'when ,itis desired to remove the member B. When the member B is inracemes Aug. 17, 1909. I
serte'd in the "member A the handle can be forced downward through the openings in the member A and through one of the slots 2 in the member E when the sides of the handle will move away from each other and engage the body of the box B. The sides of the handle will engage the central member or guiding strip 6' which separates the two slotted openings 1' in the member A when the hooks engage the body portion of the member A. The openings 2 permit of the expanding of the boxflsections when it is desired to fill'the member 3' above'the top thereof, which is accomplished by the handle passing through the uppermost slot 2' of the member B. I The member A is provided on the bottom with a horizontal elongated slot 7 through which is received a latch 8, which is pivotally mounted in the member B. When the two sections are placed together the latch the handle are withdrawn through one-of the openin s 2 until the hooks will engage the body oi the section A. The two sections are now unlocked and can be withdrawn from each other. A flap 10 is secured to the member B on the inside thereof and is adapted to extend overthe openings 2 and prevents the hooked ends of the handle from coming in contact with the contents of the box. Another flap 12 is secured to the member B and received over the end of the latch 8 which projects into the member B.
In the modification of the handle I have shown the resilient handle coiled in the center or wound around a wooden handle 11, the wooden portion acting as the handle or part to be grasped by the person carrying the carton. In the other form described the person desiring to carry the carton can grasp the metal handle.
From the foregoing it will be soon that I have provided a means of connecting two sections of a box together which is simple of construction and may be manufactured at a small cost.
It is evident that more or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do notwish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but:
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box composed of an inner and outer section, the inner section adapted to be received within the outer section, said sections having openings therethrough, a handle having hooked ends extending outwardly therefrom adapted to pass through the openings of the two sections, and the hooked ends of the handle adapted to engage the body of the inner member for connecting the two sections together and permitting the box to be carried by the handle.
2. A box comprising an inner and outer member, the inner member having openings in the top thereof for permitting the expansion of the box, slots in the top of the outer member, a handle having hooked. ends adapted to be received through the openings in the outer member and through one of the slots of the inner member and the hooks adapted to engage the inner member whereby the two members are locked together.
3. A box comprising two members having openings therein, a handle received through the openings of the two members for connecting the two members together, said handle adapted to be withdrawn through the opening of one pf the members and engage the body of the other member whereby the two members are unlocked.
4. A box comprising an inner and outer member, the inner member having two openings therein arranged one in advance of the other, and the outer member having openings therein adapted to be brought into alinement with either opening of the inner member, a handle received through the openings of the outer member and through one of the openings of the inner member for connecting the two members together, said handle adapted to be withdrawn through the opening of the inner member and engage the body of the outer member whereby the two members are unlocked.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
