COLORED CELLULOSE ARTICLE.
Cellulose Articles and the Processes of Mak# ing the Same-fof which the following is a speciiication.
Formerly when 1 producing artificial threads, fibers, strips, -ilmsor the like, from cellulose for instance cotton, suliite cellulose, the cellulose productsy obtained Were colorless or White and Were dyed in any desiredmanner as is done with articles of the natural fiber. this dyeing could als'oibe effected by vproviding the cellulose solutions from which the cellulose articles were produced, withthe suitable coloring matter, 1N ow, (experimentsV have shown that whenl a certain raw cellulose materialisemployed, colored cellulose articles 'can be directly produced from the4 solutionsof the same. For this purpose, the
cellulose of cottonseed shells has proven suitablei- This result is effected by forming a, solution of cottonseed'sliell cellulose, in a suitable solvent, .such as caustic alkali Withsulfuret of carbon, Schweitzers reagent, chlorid of zinc, and obtaining cellulose articles therefrom ina suitable manner. This may be carried out practically'in the follow` ving Way z-For instance, this. solution of the cottonseed shell cellulose is lpermitted to enter through openings of a cross-section which is adapted to thel cross-section of the 'cellulose articles to be-produced', into a precipitat ing liquid 'of an acid nature. This solution may be of either an acid or acid salts, and
may also contain other salts, in which more of an acid nature, such as sesqui-saltsjmay also be used. The threads, strips, etc. formed have a crosssection corresponding `to the opening and if desired, may be subjected to further treatment. Y In this Way cellulose products are obtained, which vary in color` Speeication of Letters Patent. Appiicauoafued mmh 29,'1906. serial No. 308,735.
UnderV certain circumstances' Patented Aug. 17, 1909.
according to the quantities of coloring matter left in the cottonseed shell cellulose employed, The colors vary' from red to the faintest yellow or White. The depth of the colormay. also be .regulated by adding a suitable quantity of the alkaline solution of coloring mattei' obtained ,durinf the produc- '.tion the cot'tonseed shell cell during, or after thedissolutionof the cellulose referred to. The solution of cottonseed shell cellulose employed may also contain other cellulose matter, as for instance cotton,
etc. in solution, and it isimmaterial Whether' the shell cellulose is dissolved, mixed, or in conjunction vwith the other cellulose, or Whether `the solutions are .separately produced and then mixed. The essential art is in' always having dissolved cottonseeds ell celullose present; By meansof this mixing, the desired color betweenv red and faintest yellow or white can be secured.
The natural color produced by the rocess described can of course be considera lyfvaried in any suitable manner of treatment or additions, for instan of metal salts or col- -oringmatters` I claim as my invention:
l. As a new product, an article containing the cellulose substance ofcotton seed shells .freed 'from the bindinggums of the latter, said article being colored by the natural dyfstu'lf of said shells.
2. The process of producing colored cellulose articles Which consists in dissolving a cellulose mass containing non fibrous cotton seed shell cellulose in which the natural dycst u'fl' of the shell is retained and precipitat ing said cellulose in the desired forni with 'said dye-stuil present whereby an article col- -'ored by the natural. dye-stuff of the shell is obtained, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this, specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
