PUSH-BUTTON APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1909.
Application filed October 4, 1907. Serial No. 395,954.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l', RALPH I). Bunk, a citizen ot' the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain lowing is a specilica'tion.
This invention is a push-button apparatus i speciallyesigned to generate an electric current by which may be operated various f forms of electrical translating devices, such as call bells, door locks, `iras lighters, and
other apparatus requiring electric current tor their operation.
My object is to dispense with a battery,
and more particularly with the dry batteries now so commonly employed in electrical apparatus of the kinds above mentioned.
The disadvantages attending the use of a battery are numerous, such as the formation of a short circuit at the` liiattery, the corrosion oi the wires and the contacts, renewal of the battery elements, and the expense and delay oi replacing a worn out battery by a. new one.
In the present. invention, a reciprocating push button is associated with means for directly operating the armature of a compact magneto generator, whereby the operation of said push button generates in the maor ieto machine'a current oi 'electric energy iviieli is utilized for the operation of an appropriate trauslatimr device. the latter beingr in circuit with lsaid magneto ,grencratoixl In the accompanying, drawings l have illustrated one p aetical embodiment of the invention, but. tlu` construction shown therein is to bc understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining' the limits of the invention.
F igure 1 is a. view showing my push button apparatus in connection with a trans- 5 latin;r device in `the form of avc-all bell, a part ot said push button' apparatus being.; i
shown in elevation and another part in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a .vertical longitudinal section on an enlarged scale through the push button apparatus, certain parts being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the nut. in a free or idleposition on the return movement. of the reciprocating member of push button apparatus.
A frame or casing of any suitable cliaraeter is employed for supporting the operatnew and useful: Push-Button Apparatus, of which the iol- I '1 stop pin. e.
iunparts and magneto of my push button apparatus. Said frame, A, is shown as liavmp,I a iace plate. A', and a pillar plate, A,y
but it will be uiLdcrs-tood that the particular form oi frame or casing is not a material part of the invention. Face plate, A', is shown as having` a bowl shaped socket membei', c, the inner part of which is tubular at a to serve as a guide for reciprocating member or push button, B.
The reciprocating member, B, is provided with a chamber, I), in which is positioned a ratchet nut, (l. and into said chamber extends the forward part of espiral o erating spindle. D, said spindle being in a inement with the' member, B. The rear part of spindle, D, is journaled in pillar late, A2, whereas the front part of said spin le is supported in chambered member, B. Said i chambered member is provided with a lo1igitudinal groove, e. into which extends a stop ,pin or stud` o, thclatter being fixed to the tubular part, a. of iface plate, A. The re- :iprocating member, B, is free to travel in the tubular guide, a', and it is limited to rectilinear movement therein by the screw or pin, o', working in longitudinal groove, e,
tary movement, but is free to travel in the direction of its length. The ends of groove, c. in member, B, are closed, so Athat stop pin, 1 c', will engage with said closed ends, Whereby the inward movement of member, B, unl der the pressure of the hand is arrested by Said stop pin serves to arrest, f acts against the rear closed end of member, l B, under the action ot' a retractor herein i shown as a coiled spring, E. Said spring is l represented as fitting loosely around spiral l spindle, D, and the front end of the spring acts against the Arear closed end of member, B, for the purpose of holding it normally in a position ready for operation, wherein the front part of said member, B, occupies the I, chamber of socket member, a. The magneto generat'tir is of any usual or. l preferred construction, and it is shown as being supported on frame or casing, A. The i permanent magnet, f, of said magneto generator, F, is fixed to pillar plat/e, A2, whereas i the shaft., f2, of armature, f', is journaled in appropriate bearings on pillar plate, A2.
The spiral rotatory spindle, D, is mounted in -pillar plate and reci rocatinp, member to ,turn freely therein, am said spindle is held from endwise movement b any suitable l nut, C, thus piiov'iding a compact and simple means, such as strap, d, fixe to pillar plate, A, and engaging with one end of spindle, D. On said spindle is rigidly secured a driving gear, g, which meshes with a driven gear, g', the latter bein secured to shaft, 2, of armature, f', where y gears, g, g', irectly connect spindle, D, with armature of ma eto generator.
e nut, C, is held conned loosely within chamber, b, of reciprocating member, B, and said nut is rovided on-one of its faces with ratchet teet i, c, shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The reciprocating member, B, is rovided with interior ratchet teeth, b', 'w ich are in opposing relation to ratchet teeth, c, of nut, (J, also shown in Fi 3.- When the member, B, is pressed inwarl the teeth, b', of said member enga e with teeth, e of nut',` C, thereby lookin said nut, C, to sind member, B, arid restraining said nut from rotati in' within said chamber, b, during said inward inlovernent of member, B. Said operation imparts rotary motion to spiral spindle, D, for the reason that nut, C, has a thread, or section of a thread, arranged to engage with the spiral portion of spind e, D. It follows that t e inward movement of member, B, and. nut, C, compresses sprin E at the same time spindle, D, is rotate anll gears, g, transmit the rotary motionw of said s in le to armature, f', of the magneto, w ereby, said magneto is o erated to generate an electric current. hen pressure is removed from member, B, spring, E, forces said mein'- ber back to its normal position, but during this return movement nut, C, is disengaged from the ratchet face, b', of said member, B, whereby said nut, C, is -free to rotate, idl on spiral spindle, D, when it is carried bac to its normal osition within chamber, b, of member, B. his allows spindle, D, to remain at rest and hence the magneto will not be o erated during the return movement of mem er, B, and its associated parts.
In Fig.' 1 the translatin device ris rep? resented 1n the form of a ca l bell, G, which is included in a circuit, h, h', with the magneto, F. It will be understood, however, that other forms of translating devices may be used in connection with the push button apparatus. i
he push button or reciprocating member,
B, may be of any suitable construction, but, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, saidpush button consists of two parts, b2, b3, the latter having an internal thread and the former having a male thread whereby the two arts may be screwedtogether detachably, t us enabling easy access to be obtained to chamber, b, for lacing nut, C, therein, or removing it thereom. The male threaded part of the member is rovided on its inner extremityT or face with t e ratchet' teeth, b', with which are adapted to engage the ratchet teeth, c, of
construction of the ush button with which co erates said ratc et nut.
I- avin thus fully described the invention, what I c aim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

. 3. In a push button apparatus, a magneto, a casing separate from said ma etc, a push button slidably mounted in sai casing, said push .button having a chamber and a ratchet surface within sa d chamber, means acting on said push butt for returning it to a position exposed for access exteriorly with respect to said casin a ratchet nut in coperative relation to t e ratchet surface of the push button, and a s indle operatively connected with the rate et nut and said magneto.
