ELEVATOR CAR AND WELL DOOR OIERATING'MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent. 4
. Patented Aug. 17, 1909.
k pplication filed September 21, 1907. Serial No. 393,912.
- Citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. count of Cook, State of Illinois, have made a certam'new and useful Invention 111 Elevator Car and \Vell -l)oor Operating specification. v
TlllS invention relates to elevator car and well door operating mechanism.
The-object of the' invention is to provide means whereby the car door operating means cannot-be put. in operation until the canarrives ad aCentan inclosure or well door.
. A further Ob'jBCt is 'to provide means 'whereb f the door, on the car, and a door of the inc osure orelevator shaft or well are neither can be oper- A further object is to provide means which are simple and etlicient for simultaneously controlling the operation of car and inclosure or well doors. v.
Other-objects of the invention will appear more 'fully hereinafter.
ThQlHVQDLlOIl consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the a pended claims.
The sun elevation, and somewhat diagrammatically,
a construction of cooperating car door and inclosure or well door operating mechanisms and their interconnections. and embodying the principles of my invention.
Forolearness of illustration and description Ihave 'shown the car door operating mechanism at one side and the inclosure or well dooroperating mechanism at the other side of the. View of the drawing, but it is to be understood thatin ractice when the car is in the 'required positioii "for the door thereon to be opposite a shaft or well door, for the tu'odi'mrsto be simultaneously operated, the operating mechanism for the one door is directly behind that of the other door.
\Vhere operating mechanism has been .ein- -ployed not only for the door on the. car but 'also'foif 'thc'doors of the car inclosure' ur elevator shaft orwell, it has hitherto been a common practice to so construct, arrange and install the mechanisn'is that the car door coiild be opened at any time. It has also e view of the drawing shows in been a connnon practice to so arrange the inclosure door operating mechanism so that such door cannot be operated-until the car arrives opposite or adjacent sucli door. The
.capability of the car door to be. operated at any time whether the, car is op iosite a floor or landing or not, is objcctiona 'ileand dangerous in thatthrough the opening of such door before the car arrives at a floor or landing, or while the car is in motion, the danger v is incurred of passengers on the car vattempting to step through t e car door opening and hence being caught or jammed betweenthe" floor of the'cai' and the ceilin of the floor or landing, or otlierprojectin edge, in case the car is ascendin or the. eel ing or roofof the car-,and the cor or landing or other projecting-ledge or shoulder of the shaft or well in case the car is descending. Serious and often times fatal. accidents ha ve occurred in this manner in the operation ofelevators. It is among the special purposes of the present invention to rovide means for avoiding the den 'er re erred to and to render the operation 0 -elevators more safe.
In accordance with the principles of the present invention I propose to ,provide means whereby when operatm devices "are enrployed for the elevator siaft, well or i'uclosure doors and also for the C31"(100I,tl1101lgl1 suitable connections cont-rolled by the control mechanism for the car door operating mechanism, such r door operating mechanq'sm cannot be 0p ated until the car arrives adjacent the inclosure door, and approximately level with the floor or landing, and when the car arrives at the required point then the car door and inclosurc door are simultaneously operated.
While I have shown and will now describe one construction and arrangement for accomplishing this result, and the best. form in which I at present contemplate carrying my invention into practical operation, I desire it, to be UIldCIStOOtilllltl-t my invention is not to be limited or restricted to the 'conmay or may not be the same in construction and arrangement, so far as the present in vention. is concerned. "To illustrate the rin- "ciple's of my. invention, however, I ave 'shown the same construction of power .mechamsm' for operating the doors. This mechanism consists of power cylinders 3, 4, to which. power medium may be supplied,
' such medium, inthe supply and ex aust 1 thereof, being controlled y valvedevices 5, 6, having operating arms-7, 8, connected by links 9, 10, to levers 11, 12. The pistons of the power cylinders operate cross heads 13,
' 14:, which are connected by links 15, 16, to
door -o eratin levers 17, i 18 pivotally mounts and iaving suitable slidingdennect-ion as at 19, 20, with the doors 1, 2; The
' lever 11, of the car door operating mechanisin is. pivotally connected at one end ,to the cross-head 13, and at the other end, through suitable intermediate connections, to the control lever 21. Similarly, the lever 12 bf the ,inclosure dooris pivotally connected at one "end to the cross-head 14,. and at the other end through a link, rod or other connection 22, to a lever 23, the latter being acted'upon' by a 5 ring 24, the tensionof which 0 rsting oughlever 23, rod-22, lever 12,- ink 10,- and ar1n 8,' normallytends to .holdthe control valve 6, in position to maintain the door 2, closed. I I
It is to be understood thatthe door 2, and 1 its associated, power operating mechanism,
, including the link or'i'od22, lever 23 and spring 24, are-erected inthe inclosure and at- 5 he I stop, and that each landing or mclosure,if
floor OrIandingat'Which the car is to so sired, is similarly equipped. It is also to be understood that the door 1, and its associated power operating and control mechanism, and, infect, all the other devicesand mechanism hereinafter to be referred to and constituting features of my invention are mounted upon the elevator car. It is also to be understood that while I have shown and described aspecifie construction and arrangement of power and control mechanism for operating the doors in order to illustrate my invention, any other form and construe.- tion of such mechanism maybe employed and may well answer the required purpose.
I will now describe a construction and arrangement whereby the operation of the car door is rendered impossible until the car arrives op osite or adjacent a landing or floor, but w on the car is opposite or adjacent the landing or floor, then both the car and the 'inclosure doorsare operated simulta neously, this being the important and valuable feature of my invention.
Interposed in the connection; between the control lever 21; and the inotoe' controller ti, is a spring 26, the tension of which normally tends to maintain the controller in' position to keep the door 1, closed. In the particular form shown, to which the'invention is not n: s ee to. be limited or restricted, however, 'the" spring 26, is connected to and acts upon one arm "ofa bell crank lever 27, said arm being? connectedh'y-a' link-28, to on'e'end of a bar '29.. The other arm of said bell crank lever 7 27, is connected by means of a link 30, with. the end' cl lever 11L The othcr'end of {liar 29 18 connected to a sliding rod 31, whichds connected, through crank arms 32, with if, shoe 33. The bar 29, is'connected inte'rmedr ate its ends, through a rod or other connec tion 34, with the control lever 21, 'but is normally held by a spring 35, against back SW S 36.-
roln the foregoing description itwillbego seen that in their. norni'a-l pos'1t1ons,'as shown in full lines, the bar 2931s held against its backstops 36,'the doors';l and 2 are held closed, and the-trip shoe is. held retracted.
Under these condltions thecar may be-operated up- OI-dOWHZdl'it-llblll) ineurring'the danger ofiinjury or -accident due'to'the in-' opportune OPEIHII of;- the, car door, 1 theretracted posit on 0 .zthetrip shoe 33, enablin said shoe .;to-pass- -freely by-the levers 23,0 the inclosnre door :Icontiollin' mechanisms, without operating;.;the ;sa neyi ow,-su poses-V the car doorfcontro lever 21 1s frocke mtothe'position shownrvdotted'rlines'v-and be fore the car arrives oppositea flooror land. ing.
