JNlTED PATENT OFFICE ANLER PETERSETF EELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS. CARRIER FOR BRAID, CORD MAKING, AND SIMILAR MACHINES.
No. 931,083 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 17, 1909. Application filed July 15, 1907. Serial No. 383,718.
Wrmsw i To all 107mm it may concern: I called Lecson wind, or alter the manner of c it known that l, ANKER PE'rERsEN, a l windinglilling, so that the thread may be de subject of the King of Denmark, but at preshvered lrom the end ol the thread mass With out a resident of helsea, in the count of out the mass revolving. This quill at its up Sull'olk and State of i\iassael1usetts, have in per end will in practice be about one-quarter vented an Improvement in (.arriers for l inch in diameter, and about three-quarters Braid, (0rd lilaking, and Similar lll achines, I ol' an inch at its lower end, and the lower end of which the following description, in connoc- I may have a notch to lit apart ll) ol' the spintion with the accompanying drawing, a dle which is of other shape than round.
l0 s 'icciiieatioi like characters on the drawing The thread is led from the thread mass representiz like parts.
his invention has for its ob ect the production ol :1- novel carrier lor use in braiding.
substantially in line with the hmgitudinal center of the thread mass, and thence, as cord making and like machines, for the shown between a pair of tension rollers b, b 7 1.3 manufacture of braids, cords and other artithat may turn respectively about pins-3, 4, oles ll'fill'l threads, whether tubular or llat. one carried by a lever I1 mounted on a pin 1) The carrier herein shown and claimed proin ears I) erected on the top plate, the other sents connected bottom and top plates bepin beingsustaincd bycars5dependingl'rom twoer which is located a large thread mass, said top plate. ihcsc rollers may be made 7= and the thread delivered by the carrier is to press with more or less 'l'orce on the thread actedupon by atake-up device that cares for bcing drawn between them by adjusting a the slack thread and insures its delivery to spring 6 coiled about pin 6 As the thread the fabric under uniform strain, the eve of is drawn between these r llers, the rollers are the take-up or slack threatl-controller being turned so that they act to iced the thread 25 moved in substantially a horizontal plane or from the thread mass longitudinal center of the thread mass and The leading end oi the top plate B, l igs. l'ietwccn the delivery-eve at one end of the l 1 to 3, is provided with a delivering eye a, top plate oi the carrier, and a stop at the while its opposite or rear end, is provided other end thereof. The top plate is provided with a stop a. 5 with a tension device herein represenlml as The plates A and B have suitable bearings two rollers that are rotated bv the pull ol the thread astholattr l through a leading eye 20 in the top plate B l l l I to sustain a rod or shaft d bent to form a is beingdelivered from the I heel d, a. port io'n of the rod beyond said heel carrier. 50 non-rotativo dead spindle or quill holder, After leaving the rolls the thread is led shown split and adapted to be partially across the wire d see Fig. 3, below the lower elosed as the butt of the quill (l ol'wood is shoulder left by'the formation of the heel d crowded thereon. The quill is preferably of and thence across said heel, contacting with Wood andhas wound on it a mass (ifol' thrcad, a shoulder d" and thence alongside of or 55 the thread inthelormation ol' the mass being about the arm (1" and through the eye (Pat wound on thequill diagonally or alter the sothe end thereoii.
From the eye (1 at the end of the take-up the thread is led through the delivering-eye c and thenceto the fabric being made from the thread, it being understood that there are a .numbe. of said carriers moving in the machine in opposite directions, preferably, and changing their positions to effect the grouping of their threads, as usual, in the desired order, according to the fabric being made. I
In use, the arm (1 due to the strain on the thread being led from its eye (1, may be drawn from the full line position Figs. 1 and 2, into the dotted line position, so that the thread eye 61' occupies a position close to the delivery-eye c in which position the strain on the thread leaving the delivering eye 0 draws thread through the eye of the take-up and between the tension rollers and from the thread mass, the take-up under the action of its s )ring immediately moving away from the deiivering eye 0 more or less, according to the amount of slack thread present between said eye (1 and the delivering eye 0. As the carrier is moved in its course and the thread is delivered to the Work the arm (1 is moved forward toward the delivering eye c, and as the thread is delivered from the thread mass the arm d under the action of the spring 0 moves the eye d away from the delivering eye more or less according to the am ount 'of slack thread. The eye d of the arr d in its movements travels in a substantial iy horizontal plane and transverse the longitudinal center of the large thread mass. The lower end of the spring e may be left to prog'ect, as shown at f, so that when the thr rad breaks and the take-u meets the stop 0, as shown in Figs. 1 Hit 2, said end wil be left to occupy a position outside the edge of the bottom plate Awhere it will coaet with a suitable part of some electric stop motion.
The construction shown in Fig. 5 is similar to that shown in Fig. 2 except that the takeup arms and tension rolls are situated differently with relation to the top )late. In both the devices, however, the ta eup arm and the tension rolls have the same position relative to each other, the only difference being that in Fig. 5 these parts are placed at right angles to what they are in Fig. 2.
llaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a braiding carrier, the combination with a carrier frame having means to sustain a thread mass, of a delivery eye sustained by said frame, a tension device to act on the thread after it leaves the thread mass, and
1 a spring-controlled, pivotally mounted takeup arm arranged to act on the thread be tween the tension device and the delivery eye said arm having thread-guiding means situated in line with its axis and a thread guiding eye at its end.
' 2. In a braiding carrier, the combination with a carrier frame having means to sustain a thread mass, of a delivery eye sustained by i said frame, a tension device to act on the l thread being delivered, and a spr -lng-conendicular to the axis of the thread mass, and situated to act on the thread between the tension device and the delivery eye.
3. In a braiding carrier, the combination with a carrier frame comprising connected top and bottom plates, of means to sustain a thread mass between the plates, a delivery eye mounted on the top plate, a spring-eontrolled shaft mounted in said plates and providedat one end with a take-up arm-situated above the top plate, and a-tension del trolled take-up arm movable in a plane pervice sustained by the top plate and comprising two rolls between which the thread passes.
4. In a braiding carrier, the combination with rigidlyconnected top and bottom plates, of means to sustain a thread mass on the lower plate, a pair of tension rolls carried by the top plate, one of said rolls being spring-actuated, a delivery eye also carried by the to plate, and a spring-actuated take up mov'a le parallel to the plate and acting on the thread between the tension rolls am the delivery eye.
5. In a raiding carrier, the combination with a carrier frame, of means to sustain a thread mass thereon, a delivery eye, a springcontrolled shaft mounted in said frame and provided at one end with a take-up arm, and a projection extending from the opposite end of said shaft.
6. In a braiding carrier, the combination with carrier frame, comprising connected top and bottom plates, of means to sustain a thread mass between said plates, a delivery eye mounted on the top plate, a spring- 1 controlled shaft mounted in said plates and provided at one end with a take-up arm situated above the top plate, and a projection Y extending from the other end of said shaft.
Iii-testimony whereof, I have signed my 1 name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
