Description

. To all 'whoifln it may concern:
UITED STATES:
.PATENTOFFICE FITTING yioaf CONCRETE cAsINGs.
Be it known thatI, FREDERICK'A. Korirrrz, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco andy State of California, have inventednew and 1 1Se. ful Improvements in Fittings for Concrete 1 Casings, v.of whichythe following is a specication. v
invention relates to improvements .in
M the fitting of concretecasings to drivenpiles,l and for like purposes, where the structure v to be protected is submerged.
Theinvention consists in a means forv preventing the entranceof mud and water into the space within the casing 'and around the ile, and in combinationot`- arts and details of construction which wil be more fully explained by reference to theaccornpanymg drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section.
i Fig. f2 is a` section on line X-X, Fig. 1
Figui-l is a similar section showing a square,
timber.
For thepurpose of protect-ingdriven piles,
it is customary to drivefan inclosed casing,
which'may be made of concrete, or other material, and which is subsequently filled with concrete which embeds and protects the inclosed pile. In the usual method of driving the exterior casing, it is necessary to excavate and pump out the mud and material which enters the casingfrom below, as the latter is sunk to the proper distance into the mud into which the pile is driven.
It is the object of my invention to preventl the entrance of the mud and water and to make a substantiall tight joint between the concrete casing an the plle, so that after the casing has been sunk to its position it will not be necessary "to excavate and pump out materialto make place Afor the concrete which is to-be placed within the casing and around the pile.
As shown in the drawings, A ils-a pile, and
ma `represent any structure which is to be em edded in the bottom underneath the water. larger diameter which is to be sunk around the pile and subsequently filled with concrete. I prepare this casing by fixing in the lower end a closure 3 which may be ofany suitable or desired form for the purpose.' It may be. introduced into the bottom of' the casing; but I have found a very suitable method is to secure the closure 3 by means specification of Letters Patent.' Y. Application led December 24,1908;v Serial No. 489,108.
2 is 'a vconcrete casing of suiiiciently l patented gigi-11909.
i of .bolts which may be cast into thefconcrete casing when the'vvlatter is' formediand the closure hasI an o ening inthe center, large enough to lit loosely H j outer edges passing over the'vv lts which project from lthe concrete mayfibe,` secured by nuts, or in other suitablema'nne', As the pile-'usually tapers' from the head tojthe around the ile, and the point, the ,space through which the pile passes must be of sufficient sizeto fitove the upper end and in order to' substa ltally close this space until the casing'h'as be n ern-2` bedded' in the mud around the pile, I employ a flexible strip 4whicli is .fitted to'theupperf' side of the closure or shoe 3, to whichfitpmayf".n
be attached, and the inner edges may be'zfyg" upturned, or in other way brought to jcontact with the surface'or periphery ofthe pile. Upon the top of` this l"shoe," and sur-'- rounding the upper end .of tlfe pileafter. the,
pressed so' as to t closely around-the pile 9 other suitable flexible 'materialf When the casing thus prepared is let down through` the surface of the mudand lsafterward driven, the shoe, witlnthe gaskets 4 and 5 and the filling of concrete, will revent th'e entrance of any mud or material orm'ing the 4bottom into whichthe caslng is to be driven; and the soft concrete around the pile' alsov serves to strengthen and-support the casing at this point, 'and prevent' its ru ture when being driven;` Any suitable iY ing mea-ns may be emplo ed to maintaln the pilein` the center-oft e casng, one of lsuch means bein y shown in the resent case by the shoe whic is secured tot e bottom of thecasing. After the casing has been sunk to its final plpsition, the remainder of the space around t e pile may be filled by concrete, which will be lntroduced and tamped in the usual manner'. y c
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with' a driven pile and a concrete casing therefor, a shoe having a 7i'. casing has-been lowered to the surface ofthe water, I place a mass of softf'conc-ret e-v Vwhich may be tamped or otherwise comou illing of soft concrete upon the shoe und gasket fitting the ehnnel around the lower -10 "around the pile while the casing is being side ofthe shoe.
if# and a concrete casing therefor, of a shoe substantially closingthe. -lower end. of the casingdri-ven. In'testmony whereof I hve hereunto set' 12. The combination with a dri-,ven pile my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses. A- p FREDERICI {'A. KOETITZ.
