vented an Im rovement in Cement-Applying Devices, of w 'ch the -.fo llowing description, in connection with the accom anying drawings, is aspecication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
nous. surface of tough, highly yielding character, preferably of qulteappreciable depth or thickness.
My invention will be more fully set forth in the following description taken'in connec the corresponding tion with the accompanyingdrawings and the invention Will be more particularly delined inthe appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical transverse section of a machine of the general construction and arrangement of parts set forth in `my patent, rovided with my present im rovements. ig. 2, is a erspective view o a fragmentary rtion o the new roll. Fig. 3 shows the ro in front elevation, the shaft being broken away. Fig. 4 illustrates in top. lan the eect of my improvement in app ying cement to 'an innerso e. l
The general features of construction and operation of my machine will be understood by'reference to my before mentioned patent,
arts being similarly lettered herein arid t erefore not further described. l e
The roll a3 which is preferably of highly resilient material as described in said atent is supplied with cement a2 by a distri uting roll a and the `inner-sole is fe thereto .by the superimposed feed roll a, a projecting abut, ment or stop a being provide against which the front end of the innensole may be placed in order to bring it exactly in position.
In accordance with this invention the re- My `invention/is an lmprovement in ma-V i cement as desired.

silientfeenient. a plyingv` rolllhasf a p iiexible periphera surface in which are cement-carrying pockets.
periphery of the; roll a? is 'provided'with a Jacket or covering c capable ofyielding freely 1n all directions, according to the movement of the contained resilient substancewhich comprises the roll proper. covering or outer surface cis made of tough, durable material, which stand a great deal of wear and luse without appreciable permanent compression and is practically indestructible under ordinary conditions of use, while at the same time permitting the cement applying surface of the roll -to yield in all directions re'uired for applying the. ile `this covering may be made of various materials, I have found tough,
In the, illustrated' 'embodiment 0f. the invention the .resilient Preferably this I that the above character and results may be obtained to best advantage by having a knit--l ted, brous 'and absorbent Jacket prepared as shown in' Figs. 2 andv 3, this jacket or covering beingv made of strong cord or thread, coarsely knittedso as to give it the required depth `or thickness, strength, permanence,`
and binding structure.
v 'The covering is made in open-Work fashion and preferably it has a delinite arrangement of openings or ockets c', c2 arraned 1n similar longitudina series, saidseries v`being alternating or sta gered with relation4 to each other so that t e openings or pockets c come out of circumferential alinement with the openings or pockets c2. The result of this construction 1s that, in use, the cement is deposited regularly in daubs, as it were, as indicated at c, Fig. 4, although the entire'surface c4 receives some cement,
Preferably the open- Work jacket is mounted on a flexible base orretainer of thin yieidingl, coarse-mesh, or non-rforaminous. materia such as burlap, netting, etc., as indicated at d, which, if desired, may be secured to the jacket at intervals, as indicated at 05, this base serving as a PIOtCtOI' fOrv retaining and preserving the resilient material 'of the roll Without' interfering with its freeyielding eiiciency.
The combination of the resilient substance of the roll itself With' the readily iieXing covering or outer surface described, gives uniformity of. action and long life to the roll,
cheese-cloth, leather,
5 use,- all that the o erator has-to ldo issimply to see that he p a'ces theend of the inner-sole against the stop z at the proper time, the machine being perfectly automatic otherwise; and, by reason of my present 1m- .10 provement, no further adjustment will, as a rule, be re uired, inasmuch as the receiving surface vof t e roll al cannot wear down or become displaced and the mesh-like cementcarrying surface thereof insures that a proper and uniform delivery and transfer of cement will alwaystake place.
If th'e peri heral pocketed surface of the roll is formed b a jacket such as that described above, t e jacket will preferably be -removable so that 1f it, or the retainer c in case the retainer is used, becomes Worn or injured they may be replaced bynew coverm upon the same resilient ro l body.
urther advantages, and other equivalent embodiments, of my invention will occur to those skilled in the art, in view of the foregoing explanation thereof and as already intimated, I do' not intend to restrict myself in all respects to the details herein presented, as various changes in material and construction may be resorted to without departing from the s irit and scope of my invention. I wis it understood lthat while m machine is particularly adapted to inner-so es, it may taps and the e, and that accordingly I use the wordl inner-sole in the claims and elsewhere, without intending to restrict the machine in any way thereto.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- 1. In a machine of the kind described, a cement-applying roll having a resilient body 45 portion provided on its outside with a perijlheral surface of durable, fiexible material fu of holes. Y
