I specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed December 11, 1908. Serial No. 167,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK PAmzEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at @hicago,
county of Cook, and State of Illinois,'have invented certain new and useful Iin rovements in VVind-Shields for Automobi s, of
which the followin is a specification.
My invention re ates to folding shields for automobiles and other vehicles, and more specifically to the hinge connections between t e foldable parts thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a hinge of the character stated provided with means for rigidly locking the parts of said hinge together when the shield parts con nected thereby are ,in 'alinement with each other.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a hinge of acharacter as mentioned provided with locking means as stated ada ted to be readily and easily operated, and wich will be of the highest possible efliciency and of a neat and finishedappearance.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
\Nith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a hinge, similar forms thereof being adapted to be embodied in a shield ofthe character described, at the extremities of the adjoining edges of the foldable parts thereof. 7
My invention further consists in a locking member in o er'ative connection with said hinge parts, t e same being provided with a pro ecting annular flange adapted to rest snugly in an annular groove formed in said hinge parts. I
My invent'on further consists in means for holding said ;locking member in engagement with said annular groove, and in certain other details. of construction which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front portion of anautomobile provided with a shield in- Which is embodied the preferable form oi my device. .Fig. 2 is a front elevation of said shield in which is embodied my hinge connection. Fig. 3-is a detail top lan view of my device. Fig. 4 is a longitu inal section thereof. Fig. 5 is a. side elevation thereof in opened position, the hinge-looking preferamember thereof being removed, and Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line a;:c of Fig. 3, the upper extremity of one of the shield brace-rods employed in connection with my device, being shown secured therein. 1
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates a folding shield consisting of the upper and lower parts 2 and 3 respectively, t e lower part thereof being secured in any suitable manner to the vehicle, preferably to the upper edge of the dash-board thereof, by means of a su' ort 4. Said shield is formed of the ly channeled tubular frame 5, in each of the upper and lower parts 6 and 7 respectively of which is mounted a glass plate 8. interposed between the adjacent extremities ofthe vertically dis osed portions 9 and 10-respectively of the ame parts 7 and 8 are similar locking hinge members 1 1, preferably formed of cast brass, although any other suitable material may be used if desired. It is in said hinge members that my invention is wholly embodied. The
hinge portion proper of each of said members 11 consist of the upper and lower parts 12 and 13 respectively, to the reduced end portions 14 and 15 res ectively of which are socured, preferably y brazing, the adjacent extremities ofthe before mentioned portions 9 and 10 of the frame 5 Said parts 12 and 13 of each of: said members 11 are hingedly secured together by means of a hinge pin 16, resting in alining periorations provided for the reception of the same in the interjacent offset hinge lugs 17 and 18 of said parts 12 and 13 respectively. For the reception of the glass plates 8, I provide each of said parts 12 and 13 with channels 19 in alinement with each other and with the channel of the frame parts 9 and 10. Each of the adjoining edges of the glass plates 8 rests in a preferably substantially semi-circular sheet metal. channel member 20, the extremities of which are secured, preferably by brazing, in semi-circular recesses 21 provided for the reception ofthe same in the hinge arts 12 and 13 of the member 11. In or or to facilitate locking said shield arts in alining'position, as shown in Fig. 1, provide the hinge part 13 with a cylin rical projection 22 preferably in alinement with the ad'oining'edges of the shield parts 2 and Loosely restin upon said cylindrical projection is a tubu ar member 23, the enlarged circularly formed inner edge portion 24 of which is tapered as clearly shown in Fig. 4, said edge portion bemg adapted to fit snugly in a correslpondlngly tapering annular groove 25 forme partly 1n the enlarged substantially semi-cylindrically formed ortion 26 of the hinge member 12 and part y in the enlarged substantially sem1- cylindrically formed ortion 27-of the member 13, as shown in ig. 5, for the reception of the same; A hand wheel 28 threaded upon the outer end portion of the projection 21, the same abutting the outer extremity of the member 23 obviously facilitates forcing said edge or flange portion 24 of the member 23 into engagement with the groove 25, as shown in Fig. 4. A coil-spring 29 interposed between the portion 27 of the member 13 and a shoulder 30 formed in said member 23, serves an obvious pur ose. By forming the flange portion 24 an the groove 25, correspondingly tapering in construction as de scribed, and further by forcing said groove of a greater depth than the width of said flange, as shown in Fig. 4, it is obvious that when said flange portion of said-member 23 is' in engagement with said groove, said arts 2 and 3 will be securely and rigidly eld in alinement with each other, and because of the latter provision, all Wear upon the contacting surfaces of said flange and said grooved portions will be taken up, thereby adapting my device to efficiently fulfil its purpose at all times. By unscrewing the land wheel 28 until the flange 24 is out of enga ement with said groove 25, the hin e mem ers 11 will permit of folding said shie (1 parts 2,and 3 together, that is, the part 2 may e ositioned parallel to the part 3, as shown in ig. 5. In order to facilitate rigidly holding the parts 12 and 13 against possible rela tive lateral movement, when in closed osition, I form the contacting surface 31 0 the enlarged portion 27 of the member 13 grooved in construction, and form the contacting surface 32 of the enlarged portion 26 ofthemember 12 tongued in construction, said contacting faces being adapted to form, when said parts 12 and, 13 are in closed positlon, a tongue and grooved connection between said parts, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4. By such construction it is obvious that all possible relative movement of the hinge parts will be eliminated, the same being, by such provision, positively held in rigid posltlon. Y
33 indicates an extensible brace-rod one belng provided at either side of the shield in order to support or brace the same. Each of sald rods consists of telesco ic tubular members 34 and 3501' any suita le length and diameter, and a rod -36 resting within the member 34 of said tubular members. Said brace-rods are so constructed that by drawing the rod 36 upwardly causes the locking of the members 34 and 35 together. Such locking construction, however, is not shown, as it does not form a part of this invention The upper end portion of the member 34 rests snugly or, is preferably brazed in the circular seat 37 provided in an enlarged portion 38 of the member 23 for the reception of the same. The end portion 39 of the rod 36 is preferably square in cross section, the same slidably resting in a slot 40 of the same shape provided in the portion 38 of the member 23 in axial alinement with the circular seat 37. A hand-wheel 41 threaded upon the extreme end portion 42 of the rod 36 facilitates the actuation of said rod.
With the provision of a hinge and locking means in conjunction therewith, of a construction as described, thepositive and rigid holding of the parts of a shield in alinement with each other will obviously be insured.
Although I have described my device in conjunction with a shield of certain design, it is understood that I may connection with any other shield to which it is applicable. And while I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of 111 y device, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
