Description

JAMES H. WYATT, OF PHILADLPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM M. SCOTT, OF PHILADEVLPHIA', PENNSYLVANIA. i
SNP-WITCH.
No. 930,449. specification of Letters Patent. i 'Patented Aug. 10, 1.909.
`Application filed February 6, 1908. Serial No. 414,467. i
To all who'm 'it may concern: i y ingmember. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the Be it knownl that I, JAMEs H. WYATT,`a I same. Fig. 10 is an end view of the same. citizen of the United States, 'residing in the Fig. 11 is a'side view of the contact carr city and countyl of Philadelphia, tate of I ing member.` Fig. 12 is an end view of the o Pennsylvania, have'inventeda certain new A and useful Improvement in Snap-Switches, a portion of the switch supporting plate. of which the following is a specificatiom' I f My invention relates to an electrical i or receptac e of insulatino' material, such as switch and more particularly to a *snap molded porcelain7 adapted to contain and 10 switch, and preferably of the type to be opsurround the switch mechan'ism. Upon the. erated by push button or the like. v top of the receptacle is. secured the base plate It'is the object of'my inyention to roduce 1 upon which the entire switch mechanism, snap switch which shall make an break except 'the stationary contacts, is supported. circuit with a sharp decisive movement and A finishing plate 2 is secured by screws 3 to 15 yet with the expenditure of a minimum of the plate 1.
efi'ort on the part of the operator. lAudit Apertures are made through the base is the further o ject oflmy invention to pro plate 1 as-Well as through the fin'ishing plate the type disclosed in 2 to permit the passage of'the two push but? which it shall be impossible for the mo'ving' tons 4 and 5. The buttons 4 and 5 are 20 contacts to stop in any position 'other than mounted, respectively, upon the vertically the full open circuit position or the full cirdisposed metallic mem ers G and n7. The cuit closing position. 'To this end I have member 6 is pivoted at 8 to the firm-9 of the provided a snap switch in which the contact spring winding -member 10 to whose other carrying member is held'restrained in both arm 11 there is pivoted at 12 the other but- 25 of its positions by a reciprocating detent Or .toil member 7. Depending from the under latch engaging with alocking member enslde'of the base lplate 1, between the buttons gaging the c0ntact 'carrying member, r0-` 4 and 5, are the two downwardly extending jections being provlded upon the Operating switch supporting members 13vand 14. -Exor spring winlng member foren agmg the' tending horizontally through them is the w.

lmmediately to thel left of the detent or lock '19, as v'iewed in Fig.l 3,` is the looking member 27 which is freely mounted upon a bush-ing carried by the shaft and which has the locking surfaces 28 and 29. 'The locking surfaces 28 and 29 are adapted to be engaged by the tongue or lug 21 upon the latch or detent plate 19.
r1`he contact carrying' member 3,0, shownin i? 11 and 12, has two end heads 31 having central openings 15' for the passage of the shaft 15 upon which the' contact carrying member is'pivoted, the outer holes 32 serving to receive fastening means for holding the movable contacts 33 carried by but insulated from the member and adapted to cngi'age the stationary contacts 34.
The horizontal-ly extending portion 30 of the contact carrying member passes through the notch in the locking member 27 and is embraced between the two ends of the slnfing 17 in' the same manner as the horizontal lu;r or projection 18 of the memberilO is cmbraced.` r1`he liorns 86 and 37, at the bottom of the switch support'ing' member 111,'
serve as limits for the movement of the contact carrying member.
Between the under side of the base plate 1 and the lug 19' upon' the detent 19 is a spiral spring 88 embracng the lug 19' and tending to hold the latch 19 tlepressed.
.belng moved in opposite direction.
vWith the parts in the circuit closing position as shown in Fig. 1, to open the circuit, the operator presses the button 5. This rotates the Operating or spring winding member 10 in a counter-clockwlse (lirection, as viewed in Fig. 2, thus winding the spring 17 whose one end is carried around in this movement by the lug 18 while the other end remains in contact with one side of the bar 30 of the contact carrying member. VVh'en the button 5 has very nearly completed 1ts movement, the lug 25 on the end of the operating or spring winding member 10, opposite to the button 5, engages the wing 23 upon the latch or detent 19, raising the same, the lu 21 is raised in the slot 22 and finally lifte upwardly beyond the edge of the looking surface 28 on the looking member 27. When this point has been reached, the l'ocking member 27 and contact carrying member are released and the contact carrying member and looking member 27 are thrown by the spring 17 to open circuit position, moving the movable contacts 33, 83 out of engagement with the stationary contact-s 34, 34. When the pressure upon the button 5 has been removed,"the detent 19 is forced sli htly downward and the lug` .21 passes behind the corner' of the locking surface 29 of the lockng member 27 to prevent the switch parts U on pressing upon button 4, the lug 21 desceiids still furtherbehind 29 and fully locks the member 2.7 whichis held in locked position until tripped by the lug 26 enga ing the wing'24 and liftmg the-detent 19 su cicntly. Thus pushing upon the one button or the 1other o ens or closes the switch, the action being c ean cut and positive, the trip ing occurring only at the extreme end o the spring compressing movement, thus preventing the movable parts taking any positions intermediate the full open circuit or full circuit closing position.
IVhat I claim is:
1. In a snap switch, the combination with a pivoted contact carrying member, of 'a looking member engaging the same, a spring,
-a sprmg winding mem'ber,v a reciprocatm .latch engaging said looking member, an
means on said spring winding member enga ing and actuating said latch only just be ore the 'end of the movement of said spring winding member to disengage said latch from said looking member.
2. In a snap switch, the combination with a pivoted contact carrying member, of a looking member engaging the same, a spring, a spring winding member, a reciprocating latch engaging said looking member, 'and a projection on said spring winding member engaging and actuating said latch onlfy just be pre the end of the movement o said spring windin member to disengage said latch from sai looking member.
3. In a snap switch, the combination with a shaft, of a contact carrying member mounted on said shaft, a sprig, a spring winding member, a latch plate embracing said shaft and engaging said contact carry- -Iath for restrainmg said means rotatin with said contact carrying member, sai
latch guided by said fixed member and mounted for reciprocating movement, and means on said spring windin member for engaging said latch only just efore the end of the movement of said winding member 'to actuate said latch.
5. In a snap switch, the combination with a pivoted contact carrying member, of a spring, a spring winding member, a latch Pet 'e having reciprocating' movement only, a member intervenin carrying' member an engaging said intervening member for restrainfng said contact carrying member, a wingvon said latch plate, and means operative just before the end of the movement o'f between said contact said latch, said latch'
