Speciflcation o! Letters Patent. ppllcation fl led Augfist 1s, 19088er1a1 m. g4sb'bu,'
T0 all wkovim it mag concem:
Bo it; knowp that I, ERABTUS E. ECKER, a oitiien of the Unitd States, residing at Kansas City, 'in' the Gounty of Jackson and State of Missouri, haVe invented certain new and useful Imp1myements in Trolley- Wheels, 0f which the following is a specification. My invention relates to imprdvements in trolley-Wheels, und on of my objia cts is to ayoid the a'nnoyahce,danger, and loss of t1me caused by the trolley-wheel leaving the trolle -yvire. 4
I avoi th'e above difficulties by roviding a trolle whegl which if its mam cantral groove eaves tho wire, Will, during the forward travpl of the car automatically replace the wire in said central groove withoubinterruptidn cf theolectric current 0 necessitating stoppage cf the car;
Anotherob'ect of the invention is to S111- iound both si es of the main central groove wdth continuous walls which have a tendency to retain the trolley-wire, in said groove.
A further object of the invent'ron is to provide means for lubricating the hubof' the trolle -whee1 and the spindle upon d wheel is mounted.
With these a.nd other objects in view, the inyention consists in the construction sind novel combination and arrangementofparts bereinafterdgscribed, illustrated in the ac companying drayving, und pointed out in the claims, it being unde'rstood that various vhanges in form, proportions, and minor details of construction Inay be resorted to without departing from the principle o1" sncri ficing any of the advantages of the invent1on.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 repre=sents an elevation of my improved imlley-wheel. Fig. 2 is a vertical lohgitudinal section of the trolleywheel. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectiofl'on line IIIIII of Ffig. 1. 1 desi nates my improved whoel which is provide with a main central peli heral groove 2, the sidos of which um purt y surrounded by two' o ositelY-(lisp0sd peripheral flanges 3, \Eli0h tend to hold the trolley-wire in said groove.
4 'designates wo oppositely disposed thread ]ike gmoves cxtmuling sp1rally nround the rim o.Pflle-4vhco1 from the ends theroof to tho oontrul gl'0Ve 2, with which thvycomnuu1icnxe,as FhHWII in Fig. l. Hnid atentqad Aug. a, 1909.
grooves ur6 formelby two. spiralflau1 es 5 und two marginal flgmges 6, anyof w 1ich are adapted to ehgage the, trol ley -Wim und conduct il:- to 'the mairy oentral gro0ve; 2,
should=said Wire accidefltally l5cofne dis placed therefrom, This replacingof the place withou t s t0j) rupting thecurrehbebween the trolleywheel and said wire. Flanges 6 are almost ual indiameter to flanges 3 so the{ will gliably engage the wire should the atter from any cause, leave the main centrai groove 2.
7 designatestwo switch-pointswhioh normally close the openings in flanges 3 where grooves 4 'cornmunicate with groove 2, Said switch-points bein rovided to overcome any tendency whicfi te wire might have to lezwe groove 2 and enter one of the grooves 4 While the car is rounding a curve or backing. Switch-points 7 are pivotall secured t'0'tho3 trolley-wheel by pins 8 w ile their opposite free ends am yieldingly-suppoxted by springs 9 seq1ired to the interior of the trolley wheel. Springe: 9 am prevented from raisihg the fr'ee ends of the swifchgoir1ts above the adjacent ends 'of flanges 3 y shoulders 10wlnch abut against the adjaceut ends 11 0f flanges 7, as shown in Fig. 3. The f1ee oncls of theswitohpoints, howover, am frce to swing downwgud through slots 12 in Hxe periphery of the wl1eel, So that. tho switch-points muy swing inward am] pnrmit the trolley-wire to pasS- from uithor 0f the grooms 4 into the main centml groovo 2. F01. instancc, should the trolle wiro loavo groovo 2 und enter 0ne of t e groovcs 4, ir will be conduotod therehy aguinst 01m oft.he switch-points 7, which is imnwdiutely depressed by the pre rsure exo.rlod thereon by tho wire, so that the latter will l o free h) ro'nter groovo 2, 'Ihe fI'OG unds 13 uf thc swifch-points am bevoled und fit ngzaiml; shmflrlers 14 0n flamges 3. so there will Im no langer of' their contactf'ug with nur] danmging the wire.
As shown m Fip;s. 2 am] 3, the trolleywhco] is hollow, I pref'er this construction as+ H lightvns the. whenl, so hat; its weight will uppfoximnfo tlm wuightof the ordinary frollv vwlwols now in um. T also inake the huh oi' (hu whovl in t.wo parts or sootions 15, m rwhwo Ihn woight ns nmch as pos.s inle,
nn(l in onlvr in prevont .=uid hnbs fmm wv:uin,q m11, und Ums xrondoring .the trolloy the sp'mdle 19 on which they are journa ed.
muy be secured to trolley-pole (nah shown) whm:l useless, I provide them with bushings 1G, made of any suituble material:and whigh ure removabl mounted in the hub, so tl1e may bgs readi y removed und re lced wit others when bhey become too ba y worn for further use. I. however rovide means for constantlylubrxcating sa1cfbushings in order to ptolong their wearing qualities, by forming lubricanl;-chmnber 17 in the hub sections 15 und providing bushings 16 with snmll apart-ums 1B, wliich communicate With said lubricunbclmmbers snthegtgoil f10m the lgxtter will flow through the 'ushings u 011 Se ctiuns 150 f the hub am connected to the interior of the tjsolley-wheel by spokes 20. Spindle 19 is mou1xted in a harp 21 which inthe cust0mai ry ma nner;
Having thus deseribed my invention, what I claim 1s:
1. A trolley-wheel having a main centraT gr0o ve und night und left hand grooves communieatmg with ofi'posite sides of said main rooves peripheral fianges artly surround- 111g the opposite sides of t e main groove, su;d flanges being cut away where the right und left grooves communicate With the main groove und yieldin means for normally c losing the 0 enings ormed by the cut away portions of t e peri heral flanges.
fl.A tr-dllcy-whee having o, main neutral groove am] flght und 1eft band grooves communicating w1 th 'OPOSi-f sides cf snid ma'm gx;ouve, periphgml anges rufly suuroundwg ihu oppm-nto s1des of t'1e main groove, sa u(l flxuxgos beinghnt uway where the right und lef gruovcs communicute with-the madn groove, und switches fr normally closing the openings formed by the cut away portions 0f the peripheral flan es.
In testimony whereof I a x my signature, in the presencc of two witnesses.
ER'ASTUS E. ECKEB.
