Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed Ivarch 16, 1909. Seria No. 483,597.
' To all whom it may concern.'
Bc it known that I, HARRY M. GoULD, a citizenol the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county ol Davidson and State ol A Tennessee, have invented or discovered cer* tain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Piling, o'll whichthe following is a'speciiication, reference being had therein to theac companying drawings. u
rl`h`s invention relatesv to 'sheet piling adapted for use for 'softer-dam Work or other purposes Where it is`desirableto provide water-tight joints, and the invention relates more particularly tothat class of sheet piling composed of sections orparts having interlocking joints, and has fior its object to provide sheet pilingwhieh Iwill be comp arativcly inexpensive in constructionfwhich will have great strength and rigidity, and in which 'the joints will e'abslolutely water-tight.
.in the accompanying drawings Figure 1. is a horizontal section oi'a piling part or element adapted tol be interlocked witha simi-l lar partei element, and Figs. 2 and 3 are views,`similar to Fig. l, showing two forms ol' vthe invention which are slightlyT different, from that illustrated in Fig. 1
Figs` 4 and 5 are detail views showing a preferred hl'orm of construction of the lower end oi'a metal parl; of one of the piling sectionaand Figs. 6 and '7 are detail views showing corner sections for the improved sheet piling.
Referring to" the drawings, l2 denotes wooden beams o'f'any suitablelength, and to which are securedpby bolts 13 nieta-l anglebeamsllQ` The beams 12 are spaced apart from each other and are joined together by connecting sections comprising meta angle beams 1.5, inner wooden, beam 16 and outer .wooden beam 17 between which. woodenY beams are preferably interposed spacers consisting ol beams or blocks 18 which may be either oi wood' or metal. Passing through the beams 16 and 17, angle-beams 15 anjd 45 spacers 18 are bolts 19 by which all of the said parts are rigidlysecured together with instead of usin T the metal' anfle-bcams l@ b 1H .l
and 15, as shown in Figs. Landi?. interiocle the vnarrower part of said plate will then be bent inwardly, as denoted in Fig. 5, and secured at its lower end by bolts 22 to the opposite channel beam or the angle beams in connection with which it is used. Figs. 4
and 5 show the plate 20 in connection with a l channel beam 21 as employed in the construction illustrated in Fig. 3.
The construction. hereinbel'ore described prpvid'es a sheet piling in` which the joints vwill be absolutely water-tight; as, when the parts are bolted together, the wood composing the beams 12, 16 and 17, will swell when wet, and this will tend to tighten thejoints at the points of contact with the angle-beams or channelfbeams, fas will beunderstood.`
The piling sections may be joined at corners of a coier-d am or other structure, when the improved sheet pilingis used for making an inclosure, by means either of connected angle-beams 23, as shown in Fig. l6, or con- 4 4nccted. channel-beams 24, as shown 1n Fig. 7,
and tho ilanges of which corner angle-beams or channelbeams will be caused to properly interlock either with thexianges of the angle beams 1 4 or with the flanges of the channelbeams 21, as maybe required; y
Having' thus described my invention ll claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
'1'. Sheet piling comprising sections each of` which is composed 'of -wooden beams spaced-apart from each other and which are provided with 'metal beams bolted theretoand having interlocking flanges, and parts connecting said spaced wooden beams coml prising inner and outer wooden beams, metal beams 'lnterlocked with the `first-named metal -beams and interposed between thesaid inner and outerwood'en beams, -spacers also interposed. between `said inner and outer wooden beams, andbolts by which said inner and outer woodenbeams, spacers, and interposed interlocking metal beams are secured together.
f2. Sheet piling comprising sections each of which is composed ci wooden beams spaced apart from each other and which are provided with V metal angle-beamsiliolted thereto and interlocking flanges, and
llo
. eeaess parts connecting said spaced wooden beams ,l irstnamed metal angle-hunne and intercomprisin inner and outer Wooden beams, metal ang ebeams interlooked with the 'first named metal anglesbeams and interposed between the said inner and outer Wooden beams, spacers also interposed between said inner and outer Wooden beams, and bolts by which said inner and outer Wooden beams, spacers, and interposedinterlocking metal angle-beams are secured together` 3. Sheet piling comprising sections each of which is composed of wooden beams spaced apart from each other and which are provided with metal bea'ins bolted thereto and having interlocking `ilanges, and parts conneetil'ig said spaced Wooden beanis coin-- prising inner and outer 'wooden beains, inetal beams interleehed with the iirstnamed metal beams and interposed between.
ner and enter wooden beams, ,snarersalso the said inner and outer wooden beams, spacers also interposed between said inner and outer Wooden beanie, bolts` by which said inner and outer Wooden beams," spaeers, and interposed interlocking` metal beams are secured together, and ay inetal. plate seenred between said onterwooden beam and sai d 'ii'st-nained metal beams.
t. Sheet piling Comprising see-tions each oi' which is composed ot wooden beamsA spaced apart from each other and which are i provided with metal angle-beaniis bolted posed between the said inner and ont-er Wooden beains, .spaeers also' ilnerposed be tween said inner and outer wooden beams, boltsby which said inner and einer wooden beams, spacers, and interposed interlocking metal angle beams are secured together, and a metal plate secured between said outer Wooden beani and said iirst-nanied metal beams.
5. Sheet piling comprising; sections aeh of which is composed oi wooden beams spaced apart from each other and which are provided .withnietal beams bolted thereto and having interiori-irrer ilanges, and parts connecting` said spa-red wooden bmnnseoinln'ising` inner and outer woorlen-beams,metal beams interloehed withthe hr.--:t1nnned nietal beains and interposed brtn'een the said ininteriosed between said inner and `enter Woo en beams, bolts by which said innery and onter wooden beams, spacers, and interposed interlocking metal brains are seenred together, and a nieta!
