APPARATUS FOR CLEANING AND PITCHING CASKS.
Specifioeton of Letters Patent.
Eatented Aug. 3,` 1009. i
Application filed March 13, 1908. Serial No. &20,878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known thot I, PAUL Snmnn'r, e s1ibject ot tho King of SoXony, residng at 3 ttortenstress Constnnce, in Germany, hove invented con ain new and useful Apporotus for Cleaning and Pitching Qesko, of which the following a speciiicntion.
The object ot the present invention is en :na mi-&tus tor npplyng pitch to and removing seine :froni berrels, cesks, and the like and 'for blowing out the latt r, the said :pperatus being distinguished froni those hithorto known for the purpose, by the pitch being :pplied and removed and the berrel blown out without theiposition of the letter being changed.
t ornerly the bei-role were placed on e 'fr-eine :for the application of the pitch, then on to another iframe for the reniovzil of the pitch end finally etter pitching onto e third trune where the barrel was blown out. Apperntushes also been used in which the` remove] oi" the pitch takes place in conjunc tion with the 'ipplicotion of seine, end the inelting ot the old layer of pitch is eft'ected at the same time as the injection of the pure pitch by the heet ot the letter but the old soiled pitch is thus mixed with the fresh pitch, runs with the letter back into the pitch-boiler and then again injected into the seine oi' another harroi. "In this method the impui'ities in the burrel removed with the ptch, flow into the hoile' containing the pure pitch, end conteniinate the letter, so that after being used for some time the pitch in the boiler will become iinpure or more so, thon the old pitch in the bttrl'Bl. i i
According to the present invention the old pitch is 'thormighly removed fronthe hairrel, then fresh pure pitch epplied thoreto and finally by blowing' in cold stilthe hosted layer of fluid pitch ishardened inithe bar reh all these Operations being eii'ected without depending on the ettention or discretion ot the worknan.
The introduction of hot air for renio'vai oi" the pitch, the introduction of the fresh pitch for its application and the introduction of the` cold oil' for the blowingout is` controlled by :in "autonioticelly opernted reguleting device, which eontrols the dur& tion oi" cech operation, end at the seine tnne indicates what is taking; place in the interier of the bar'rel, without stopping work on other barrels being i treeted. An enibodi-` neut of nppnretus suitable for this purpose is shown in the nnnexed drawing, Figure l being o sectionel clevation ot the complete plnnt; Fig. 2 is a section of e piteh reeeptecle and zillied parte on :n enlerged scale, and Fig. 3 eisectional elevation et right engles to Fig. l.
I designetes a hot air stove, H the pitch boiler, and III is one of the ptch receptacles provided with the ato'eseid reguleting de- Vice. From the stoVc Ithe hot ziir fiows into the pipe `l and froni the letter through e bronch pipe to the redietors 3 within the pitch boiler and froni there it flows back through the pipe 4: into the chenber 2 in which is a flnp Volvo 70. From the valve chenber 2 a conduit 0 leids to the inovable` pitch receptacle HT, and when the VelVe 70 is in the position shown, the hot air flows from the stove I directly into said Conduit (i, but when the valve is in e Vertical position said hot air flows first tl'irough the redintors and ofterwird into the eondnit 6. i
The hoiler H contains the fresh pitch to he epplied to the berrel, end leading froni seid boler is e plurelityfof pipes 7, corresponding to the number of novable receivers III` and through these piees the pitch hes` tree passage to the pipe 8. (Ju the letter is rotatobly inounted ai tube or shell 10 to the fionges ll of which is fixedthe receiver 12 which coi'res rollers running on a ring 61 suspended hy hooks 82 honnected by means otwire lopes, chins or equivalents 80 to counterweights 81 (Fig. The connterweights aire slightly lezwier than the empty recciver and the tube 10, so that the receivex only drops "when pitch entere some. Inthe position of the purts shown an aperture ll in theitube 10 coincides with an operture 9 in the pipe 8 and pernits ot The weight is slightlyheevier than the" weight 53, and the pulley 21 bears on the ring or hub 25 of the pipe 18 which is sheped as e support. The saidpulley ie nomhly connected to the tube by means of a Air` escepes "fro1n"the letter through `elole disk 69 the sizeof opening of the cock 64. The perforations in the ppe 65 prevent the entrence into the receiver 12 ofclirt con-,u
tained in the pitch. i
l/Vhatl` claim es`my "invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is ,u
1. Apperatus 'or the removail from end application of pitch 'to barrels and` the like, and for blowingout the letter, conprising in comloineton a rotetable and v"`erticelly movable pitch receiver and means controlled by its movements for automaticallystarting and stopping separate working"Operations for the removal and application ofiptchand the blowing out of the lohrrel. t
2. Apperetus for the purpose set forth conprising in combinatione pitch receptacle rotatable end Vertically inovehle,` atpipe, :i ptch boiler connected to the pipege shell surrounding said pipe and connected to the pitch receptacle, the shellznd pipe having & suitebly* disposedports or orifices for the supply of pitch, compressed air and` heated :Lir respectvely, said ports or orces being ceusedto coincide according to the positions i oi` rotation and heightof the pitch recep-` i u tacle.
3. Appemtus 'or the removal "from and application of `pitch to herrels and the like,
and for blowing out the letter, comprsng in conhineton` e "roteteble `and Verticelly "inov-` eble ptch recever, means controlled by its movements tor automatically starting and stopping separate Working Operations fort the re'novel and application of pitch and the blowing out of the burrel, zt pitchlboler in u communication With said recever, radietors theren, e condut for heitecl arhevng two branohes, one brench leading directly and the other indirectly through said radi` etors to the pitch ,receiver, and means Whereby `seid heated aireen he conducted directly to the receiver or through the raclii ators as desrecl. i
