MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug 3 1909 Application filed December 28. 1908. Serial No. 469,540.
To all whom it may concern.
llc it known that l', lCnNlcs'r l YAXL'EY, a citizen of tho Unilcd Status, rcsiding at (.hicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvomcnt in Motors, of which-tho following is a full, clear, concise, andcxact descriptron, reference being had to the accompany mg drawings, forming a part of this spcclfica tion.
invention relates to motors and particularly to that class o'imotors finding scrwiice in the operation of clocks, though I do not wish to be imitcd to the use to which the device of my invention is put.
Itis'onc of the objects of my invention to provide riicans for stopping tho operation of the whce train of the motor, whiolrmoans also preferably acts to start the trainwhen it .is desired to have thcstopping action-0fsaid means removed. a braking device which is prelcrably'accessL' ble from the exterior of the motor, which braking (lfiVlCG. is preferably cooperatively related to the balance wheel of the motor in umanncr' to engage said balance wheel when the'm'otor is to be stoppxed and to actuate the lbalan'c e whoelyahen t 0 motor is to be F0, leased, therebyhto start the motor, the brak in mechanism. thus having added to the H]. litional "function of a starter;
"* The portion or sieiyicc in connectionwith the mo- .tors cm loycd for operating master clocks, thou h y do not wish tobo hmitod to the use to w ich my invention is put; When used in connection "with master clocks, it enables the clock vadjustcr t6 stop the master clock quickly and to startit quicl il for the purposo of bringing the. master 0 00k into synchronis n with standaif'l timc, and Whcrcby tho. secondary clocks may bopormitted to Within in synchronism' with thomast-or clocks.- "By wayofcxam filo, let it be as sumc'd that the master oloc affects an opera tion of the motor deviccsjof the secondary clocks once a. minute," and let it be further as- .sumed that the master clock-is a half minute fast (for example)" with respect to standard time -'l.ho motor mechanism of thc'mastcr clock may be stopped by means ofthc brain ing device just'a half minute, -immcdlately whereupon the braking device r'nayho .0 ran otcd to release. the motorol' the master clock v I y The means comprises 'tion.
present feature of my invention is of i for maintaining the contacts that govern the' energizing circuit clean and bright. This latter feature of my invention finds its prcferred adaptation to the motor mcchani'sn'i covercd in my o-pending application ior United Statrs Letters .Patcnt Serial No: 424,760, filed April-2, 1908, though} do not limit myself to the. adapts ion of my present invention to the motor ofgaid application.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing,
showing several embodiments thereof, in
Which-'- e Figure 1 is a reari'view of a clock motor constructed. inaocoi 'dance .with my invbn- Fig. '2 is an enlargement of a part of the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isanenlargement of an art of the mechanism illustrated inFig. 1. Fig- 1 is a sectional View on line 4'4 of Fig. 3. Like parts are indicated by similar charactors of referent-.1; throughout the different fig ures. .i
The motor mechanism illustrated comes, as has boon stated, within tho scope of claims in my aforesaid ap .lication for United Sta-too lit:
Letters Patent berial No. 424,76Q, ffi-ltd April 2, 1908, such motor mechanisml boifi'g sclnctcd for purpose oi illustration the plcscnt application as onc to whiclrlnyes cnt invention inits dilflirentaspects int-caddy j adaitcd. This motormechanism includcsil cloctrain a in suitable .rclation with hands of the clock, all as is well uhdsrstomt by those skilled in the art.

In order to open the eireuit, the contact '11 is lifted,.whioh liftingo )ero-tion takes place when. the airmatu re e has lioen lull y nitrnoted, it being understood. that when the arrow-tore is fully attracted, the actuating pawl c has engaged a fresh tooth, the pmrl, when dro )n ping into engagement with a fresh tooth,

bracket extension of. the pawl/r located beneath the contract 72., and is desirably in the form of a screw, thus limiting the contact 2'- adjustoble with respect to'thecontiwt h, the contacts h and 11 both being preferably rigid.
-The arm h} and the mwl c are artirr-uh'tted together, the pawl 0 min provided with a cam in (2 while the contigumis end of the arm is provided with :1. slot lwhich has its lowermost oblique surface parallel with the surface of. the tooth 1), over which the'pnwl c.- is adopted .to ride when -mid pawl ismovod by the armature in ro-winding tho motor. The lower zu't ol'the uppermost surface of the com sot Z has in. similar direction, but the upper portion of the upper surl'uoc oi the cum slot I is swung toward the saidtootlrsurlnee over which the pawl c ridm: when living; moveil'hy the armature ol' the,oli-vtro-mugnot, so that when the pin-1 is in line with the upper portion of the mun slot Z, the nrin'h is permitted to deseeml slightly so as to cause it partial approaclrof the contact It toward the contact 2 before the detent or holding pawl 1c dro 5 into. engagement with it,

The initial engagement o? the contact with the contact h is effected when the pawl k hos dropped port the time that the. pawl drops the balance of the way into engagement with the tooth. This result, in the embodimenhofthe invention illustrated is obtained 1)" rei son of the have of the contact tend. pivot m is itn ular with. reepect to the line including the ru bed surface of the contact h and pivoth'. The result is furtherprom'oted by l'nivin the centers m and It nonco-in'cident. 1e initial engagement of the contact 'i with the contact 71 occurs during the e ogement of the pin. a with the upper end '0 the cum slot 1. The enlargement of the upper end of the com slot 1 permits the Spring n acting through the contact t and thecontact- 0st h, to hlt th nrm It, the rubbing vit'ction 'e't'wccn the coiltzwts moot of the arm It'is thus important in the precise construction. that 1 lmvo illustrated Ito enlorgo the up or end of the com slot 3, for if the up er sol occ of said cum-slot were kept mro-lle with the lower surf ace of said com S ot throughout, and therefore no ollel'with the surface of the tooth over w rich. the pawl c rides, the contact It would hot be lowered toward the contact i and the lprin'g 7t would not be adapted to effect ru ibing it, which ru'bbin movement accompanies the lifting action 0 the contact 1 upon thocontori-.1. in other words, the poet h s dropped fact that the luie. including t 1e. rubbed sur-- :.;ovemcnt of the oonteQt-i over the rontnct toot i, is in substantial'horizontul nlinemont with the pivot h oi the arm h and that sur-' giigeinont with the contact h is in oblique way and the rubbing actionfoccurs during by reason of the deflection in the up or obli ue wall of the cam slot 1, a distancet rou h which it may afterward be raised by the li t-- ing action of the contact 'i, for if the post it did not drop and afterward were permitted to rise by reason of the enlargement at the upper end of the cam slot Z, the only function which thespring n would exercise would -'be to bring the contact i solidly against the 10' contact it without lifting the contact h, for were the enlargement at the upper end of thecam slot 1 that had permitted the descent of the contact h, absent, said contact it could not be elevated, because the in c would not, without said enlargement o the cam slotl, have had opportunity to leave the lower ob lique surface of the cam slot 1, which lower oblique surface serves to limit the upward movement of the arm h carrying the conta cu h; In other words, lost motion is provided between the pin 0 and the 11 per end of the'cam slot 1 which permits 0 the dcscent of the arm and contact h, and, consequently, permits said arm h and contact h to rise bcfore the pin 0 is rigidly enga ed by the lower oblique wall of the cam s 0t.- The undefiected portiohof the upper wall of the cam slot 1 serves, in coeperatlon withthe pin a, to move the contact/h awa from the contact '5 after the cnergization o' the magnetf, to open the circuit'of said magnet, and, thereby permit the spring I to operate themotor. p In order that the motor may be sto ped, I. desirably provide the braking ,mecl ianism' illustrated, which includes a centrally piv-- oted braking levero carrying a brake shoe whose arc of travel'interceptsthe periphery of the balance wheel q, the operating rod r, hanging'from. thelever o,extending to the exterior of the motor mechanism,'whereit terminates in a handle 8, by grasping which the rod r may'bcnioved'upordowu to swing the brake shoe into or out of engagement" with the balance wheel, .t'hebraking en agement of the brake shoe with the balance wheel being indicated in ottcd'lines in Fig; "1 and in full lines in Fi 's., 3 and 4, the idle position of the; brake sioe being indicated in full lines in Fig, 1. After the motor has been stopped a 'sufhcientlcngth of time, it' is moved from the position shown in'the dotted lines inFig. 1 to the ,ositiou shown in full lines. Inasmuch as I ave shown the brake in cooperative. relation with the balance wheel and occup ing the position it does with relation 'to. the alaz'icei-Wheel, the upward move nent of the brake shoe, in being released from the brake wheel, will impart a turning movement to the balance wheel, which is set into 'onerallion as" soon as the brake shoe leaves tlieibalancc wheel,
I have tested the device constructed asl illustrated in the drawing, and by operating the motor at a high rate of speed, have obtainable, as has the precise caused contact to be made and broken ath and 2'. over ten million times without an at'-- t-cntion tothe contactsh'and i, thus in icatthat a clock would operate, with a su1tlIl ab le source of current at g, upward of twenty cars. This test is still being continued, and inasmuch as the contacts h and i have not been impaired by burning,- corrodin or in any other discernible way, it woul seem that the motor of my invention would 156.75 capable of operation fora much greater period of time,'which Treat length of service is een indicated, without any cleaning of the contacts'h and i'other than that occasioned by the-rubbing action of the contacts.
It will be observed that the brake when applied to thebalan'ce wheel, rotates the balance wheel, thereby romoting the starting tendency of the ba ance wheel when the brakev is released. r e
While I haveherein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to arrangement illustrated, as chan es may readily be made. without departing from the spirit of the invention."
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:-
