CORSET.
.APPLICATION FILED FEB.1B,1907.

CORSET.
No. sisef/ofi.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 19M.
Application led February, 18, 190'?. Serial No. 358,050.
To all 'whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GRACE Penn., a citizen of the United States, residing at'Chicago', in the county of Cook and State of lllinoisfhave invented certain new and useful` Improve ments in Corsets, of which the following is a speciiicatinn.
The object of this invention is to construct a front lace corset with a shield or protector secured to the corset along one edge of the open front and adapted to underlie the lacing,
in order that the body ot' the wearer will be held in proper form.
The further object of this invention is to construct a front lace corset with a shield or protector located beneath the lacing and se cured to one side of the opening, the shield corded or boned cross-wise in order that it maybe held from bulging between the lacing.
The further object oi' this invention is to construct an attachment to the shield which receives the belt for producing a dip front.
The further object of this invention is to provide an open back to a side or front lace corset in order that proper ventilation may be had.
The further object of this invention is to form a sideor front lace corset with an open back which will give ease to the wearer.
The further object of this invention is to l form the back of a front lace corset open and front portion of the corset.
4connecting the sides of the corset with tapes permanently attached to the `ends and connecting them.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a. perspective view of the corset as seen from the -front. Fig. 42 is a top view of the Fig. 3 is a face representation 0f the shield in which a por tion is broken away to show the stiiiening bones. Fig. 4 is a lengthwise section oi a portion of the shield. Fig. lis a perspective `view of the corset as seen freniA the back.
Fig. 6 is a rear view of the upp'ei` portion of the corset.
The corset informed of" two sections *1 and V24 connectedn linf' the back by crosstapes 3 which leave an opening between the sections.
Thelront oi' section A1 is formed with the'.
usual steel'edge 4 to which is connected` a narrow section 5 having a steel edgeythe vsteel edges being connected in the usual man.-
ner. The narrow section 5 is connected to the section 2 by the lacing 6 in the usual manner.` To the section 2 along its front edge, and to its inner face is permanently attached a shield or protector 7 which extends the length or nearly the lengtlrof the section,
`and is of a Width to underlie the front lacing 6, and extend under the narrow section 5 and in some instances will extend under the section 1.
shield and held in place by stitching, and if deemed better the shield can be quilted cross-wise in order to give suilicicnt firmness.
In front lace corsets there has been no provision made to hold the body of the wearer from protruding through the lacings, and my invention overcomes thisV defect.
To the lower portion of the shield l secure a hook or button E) under which the bclt for producing a dip front may bc secured.
As will be seen, the edges 4 and 5 lie in approximately the saine plane, or, in other words, these parts are in alinenicnt 5 furthermore the shield not only extends beneath .at spaced points between the body oi the wearer and the garment located over the corset, these layers'presenting no substantially bulky projections either on the inner or outer sidesof the corset which would affect either the wearer or the appearance of the garment which is in contact with the corset. Further more the fact that the stud 9 extends through the spaces between thc adjacent strands, places on the shield a member which serves to positionthe shield and corset relative to each other to prevent relative movement in use.
I claim as my invention.
l. A corset comprisinga body portion.'
having fastening means permanently secured at one end and a stri i having complementari fastening means lace to the other end, said strip and the op )osing end of the corset being 1n substantie elineinent, and a shield secured to the inner face of the cprset` and underlying the lacirg and fastened ends of the corset, said shield providing a body protect ing element intermediate the connecting por tion ofthe corset, and the body ofthe wearer, the louter face of the corset being substantially free from projections along the line of connection.
y The shield or protector is formed with bones 8 extending cross-wise of' the 2. A corset comprising a bod?T portion 11,0 having fastening means permanent y secured at one end and a strip having coniplcinental" fastenin means laced to the other end, said strip an l the opposing end of the corset being 1n substantl alinernent, and a shield secured to the inner face of the corset and underlying the lacing and fastened ends of the corset, 4said shield providing a body protecting element intermediate the connecting portion of the corset and the body of the wearer, the outer face of the corset being substantially free from rojections along the line of connection, saidp shield lhaving a stud projecting through the lacing connection, said stud and \the lacing coperatin to prevent material relative movement of t e shleld and corset.
3. A corset comprising a body portion having fastening means permanently sccured at one end and a strip having complementalfastening means laced to the other' end, said strip and the opposing end of the corset being in substantial alinement, and a shield secured to the inner face of the corset and "underlying the lacinff and fastened ends of the corset, said shield providing a body protecting element intermediate the connectlng portionv of the corset and the body of the wearer, the outer .face of the corset being substantially free from projections along the line of connection, said shield having a Vstud proiecting through the lacing connection, sai( stud. and the lacing coperating to prevent material relative movement of the shield and corset, and a permanent open Work portion located intermediate the ends of the corset to provide ventilation therefor.
