carriage-is released and are threade with a tabiilator stop 51 which consists of column stop or stops49. In the resent ,inf
stance I have shown said tabulator stop -51 as normally standing below the level of the In order that.` said tabulator stop may at any time be raised to position to engage one of the column stops, said tabulator stop is pivoted on a pivot rod 52 mounted in a bracket 53 which is secured to the back bar 9 of the carriage by headed screws 53L that pass through said bracket into said back bar. The bracket 53 is formed at its upper end with two ears 54 spaced apartand the arm 51 is forked at'its forward end s'o as to give a wide and firm bearing` for said arm and to prevent displacement or injury when the stops 5.1 and 49 come forcibly into engage-V ment. A returning spring 55 is coiled about thepivot rod `52 between the forks of the stop arm 51 and one end of saidspring engages the bracket 53 andthe other Yend presses the arm 51 downward into its nor-4 mal position.
ward from the pivot rod 52 and is adapted to engage the bracket 53 when the armr 51 is in normal position.
InY order to raise the tabulator stop 51 into'position to engage one of the columnv An anti-friction roller 59 is `journaled in ears depending from the arm 51 and is adapted to roll alon the Wing 581When` the for i tabulating urposes. The rock shaft 57 has projecting t erefrom toward the rear of the machine an -arm 60, to the free end of which is pivoted at 61 the upper end of a link 62 which extends downward through the top-plate 5 and shelf 3 and at its lower end is pivoted oii a shouldered vand headed screw 63 threaded into the rear end of a lever 64 which at its forward end is pivotedon a shouldered and headed screw 65 threaded finto one of the side plates 1.v The lever 64 is formed with a slot 66 into which a pin 67 projects from one side of a tabulator key lever 68, `which at its forward lend carries the tabulatoi; key
69. The key lever 68 is ivoted at its rear end \on a shouldered an headed screw 70 In 'order to limit the downi ward motion of the arm 51, said 'arm vis formed with a heel 56 that-extends' downwhichA is threaded into a bracket 71, depending from the shelf 3. Said key lever extends back'of its pivot 70 and this rearward extension of said lever is engaged by a 'ie turning spring 79., compressed between said lever land the shelf 3. The link 62 is provided with a returning spring 7.3 vthat is coiled about saidlink and compressed between the back shelf .3 and a liub or collar 74 that surrounds said link and is secured in position thereon in any suitable manner. The construction is such that if the tablilator key,69 be depressed 'the pin 67 thereim link'62 and arm 60, will rock the shaf,t57
58 on said shaft engaging the roller r59 will i'alse the arm 51 into position to` engage one of the column stops 49.-'
Iii order to release thev arriage ,when the tabulator key is depressed the hub 74 has projecting therefrom-an arm, which, when the link 62 is drawn downward, is adapted toy engage and/depress one end of a' level' 76 that `is pivoted on a shouldered and headedA screw 77 threaded intov a bracket 79 dependingfromthe to plate 5. The A return inot-ioii of the lever 76 lis limited byan arm 80 of said lever engaging the top plate 5. The
end of the leverv 76 near themiddle yof the l,
machine has the stein of a iack-flifterf81 pivoted thereto on' a shouldered and headed screw 82. Said stein vof said -rack lifter extends upward through a suitable opening in the top plate 5 and the upper endyof said rack lifter is forked to embracel the reduced forward end of the housing 39 in which the escapementrwheel shaft is journaled. Each v ofthe forks ofthe rack .lifter 81 isfbentt- Ward `the front of the machine Vas shown in Fig. l andlies beneath the vfeed rack 4-1. The construction is such* that when the link (S2 is drawn downward by the depression of, the tabulator key C9the arm 75, en aging one end of the`lever 76, raises the ot er .endv ofv saidlever and with it the'rack lifter 81 which raises the feed vrack 41"ont of engagement with the feed pinion 40, vthus releasing the carriage and permitting it to run freely n nder the impulse of the spring, drinn 45.' Meanwhilethe tabulator stop 51- hasibeen raised into positionl to engage one ofthe columnl stops 49. There isr some lost -mot-ion between the arm 75 and the lever7 6 so that the tabulator stop 5l will have been moved into position to engage acolumii stop before the carri age is released. A When thetabulator key 69 is released the feed'ra'ck 4:1 returns into i engagement with-the feed pinion 4() and the tabulator stop 51 is moved by its spring 55 to inoperative position. l
It will be obSerNed one or more column stopsy mounted on-the fixed framework ofthe machine and .a tabiilator stop that is' pivotally mounted on the that liaveprovided' 4- yand down, that said movable stop is actuated by a rocking inemberliaving an eccentric part that directly engages said movable stop between the ends or the latter and that the axis of motion ot' said rocking member is parallel with the direction of travel of the carriage. l
varlonechanges in the deteilsof construction and arrangement may be made without departing from my invention.
What .i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszii.' ln a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a column stop bar mounted .back of the carriage, one or more column stops mounted on Said step bar and each having a stop lug,r 49 projecting,T therefrom toward the front of the machine, a strip pivoied on the carriage with freedom to move up and down and havingits rear end normally in front of said stop bar and beneath said stop lug, a rock shaft mounted below 'Said p ivoted stop and having an eccentric part adaptedwhen the Shaft is rocked to raise said pivoted Stop into the path of Said stop lug or lugs, a tabnlator key, and connections for rocking said shaft, a lever 76 of the first order operated, by said key, and a carriage release device operated by said lever.
f2; ln a typewriting machine. the combination ot' a carriage, upper and lower stationry rails for said carriage, standarde for supporting said rails, a column stop bar mounted in brackets projecting from said :standards and having column Stops mounted thereon, a single stop pivoted to the carriage' and projecting therefrom toward the rear of the machine and having its rear end normally below the stop portions of said rolnrnn stops, a rock shaft pivote-l in Said lQtandards and lyingbeneath said pivoted stop, a tabulator key lever, a link ($2 connecting said key lever with said rock Shaft, a lever 7G operated by Said link 62, and a carriage release device operated by said lever. l
3. In a typewritinginachine, the combina tion of a carriage, a pivoted stop projecting yhoaontally from said ari-lage and havin" an anti-friction roller 58 thereon, a roer shaft on which said roller normally'. rolls, a, feather in Said rock shaft adapted when the' shaft is rocked to move up under the roller .78 and raise said roller and the pivoted stop, and column stops in position to be engaged by Said pivoted stop when it is so raised.
l. In a typewriting machine, thecombination of a carriage, upper and lower stationary rails or'tracks for said carriage, a tabulator stop 'pivoted to said carriage between said stationary rails or tracks, a column stop bar mounted on the stationary framework, one or more column stops adjustably mounted on said stop bar, a device lying between the carriage and the column stop barand parallel with the direction of travel of the carriagey and under said tabulator stop and movable to lift said tabulator stop into line with said column stop or stops, a tabulator key mounted in the fixed framework of the machine, connections between said key and Said movable member for operating' the latter and the tabulator stop, and a carriage release device operated by said key.
