The rod or lover 7 is maintained normally at one limit o'l' its pivotal movement by means of a suitable spring applied thereto. To provide for adjusting the tension on said spring 23, the collar is loose on said rod or lover and is adapted to be secured thereto in any desired angular adjustment by means oi a set screw 24-. is inclosed in a recess formed in the collar 24. The platen 2 is adapted to be turned manually to provide for inserting and adjusting the a )01' in the machine b means of knobs 3 or linger grips 25 on the platen shalt, in a familiar manner. In order that the act-nating pawl 4 may not interfere with the rearward movement of the platen by means of the knobs or finger grips 25, means are provided to disengage said pawl from the teeth 01' the ratchet wheel when said pawl is in retracted position. As shown, the means for this purpose consist of a pin 26 secured in the platen frame 1, which projects laterally into the path o'l' travel of a cam surface formed on a rearward extension 3? ol' the actuating pawl el, the relation being such that when said pawl is lu yretractml the cam surface on: aid rearward extension 27 will ei'igage the pin 26 in such manner as to move said pawl -lpiv teary to disengag.,'e the same from the ratchet eel-h in the desired manner.
I claim as my invcntion-- 1. In a line spacing mechanism for a typewriting machine, the combination with'the. platen, a ratchet wheel secured to rotate therewith, a pivoted arm and an actuating pawl pivoted thereon, of means l'or imparting pivotal movement to said pawl carrying arm, comprising a rotatable rod, an arm projccting laterally tlurrelrom, a link which connects said arm with the pivoted pawl-carrying arm, the connection between said. link and said arm on said rotatable rod consisting of a block pivoted to said link and provided As shown, also said spring with a bearing to which the arm on said rotatable rod is slidably titted, substantially as described.

3. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion with the platen and its carriage, of a line spacing mechanism comprising a transverse rod journaled in hearings on the carriage and having its forward end extending forwardly and downwardly to within proximity to the keyboard, whereby when the carriage is retracted by means of this downwardly turned extremity the rod will at the same timebe rocked in its bearings, means for transmitting this rocking movement to the platen consisting ol' a lateral arm attached to the rod, a link pivotally and slidingly connected to said lateral arm, a pivoted arm below having pivotal connection with the lower end of said link and carryin a pawl, and means l'or tripping said pawl.
4. in a line spacing mechanism for a type writing machine, the combination with the platen and its carriage, of a linc'spacing mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel sccured to rotate with said platen, a pivoted arm and an actuating pawl pivoted thereon, of means for imparting pivotal movement to said pawl carrying arm, comprising a rotatable rod, an arm projecting laterally therefrom, and a link which connects said arm with the pivoted pawl carrying arm, said rotatable rod extending forward from the platen carriage and the end thereof being bent downwardly.- below its axis of rotation into accessible proximity to the keyboard of the instrument, the relation being such that a pull on said rod in a direction to retract the platen carriage will impart rotation thereto in a direction to operate the line spacing mechanism, substantially asdcscribed.
