WALL-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.;l i
Patented July 6, 1909.
Appiicafion inea June 19, 1907. serial No. 379,737.
`'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. MARSHALL, a citizen of the United. States, residin at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Ange es andv mission wires are strung or secured; and anV object thereof is to rovide .a metallic plug which may be readilp inserted. in the joints formed in a brick wa l and which will be impossible to remove when once inserted eX- cept by extraordinary methods. I accom-` plish this object by means of the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1.- is a perspective view of my improved Wall plug. Fig. 2fis a longitudinal section of thesame showing itin position in a brick wall. Fig. 3.- is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4.- is a view showing the cross section shown in Fig. 3 when the plug is in place in the wall. Fig. 5. is a cross section illustrating a modified form of plug.
Heretofore in attaching or securing insulators, screw eyes or other attaching means to the Walls of brick or stone buildings preparatory to Stringing electric transmission or other Wires, the mortar or cement has to be lirst removed before inserting thewooden plugs. consumed a great deal of time and the plugs after insertion have often become loosened by crumbling of the mortar occasioned by dampness, t us necessitating frequent re- By the useof my improved device all danger arisin from lugs becoming detached from the wal s of brick buildings is obviated and I am enabled to insert them yin the minimum amount of time.
Referring to the drawings 5 designates a plug preferably formed of a resilient material such as thin sheet steel, comprising a blade 6, preferably segmental in cross section, and a shank or head 7 'struck by dies from a single piece of material. Blade 6 is preferably provided with serrated or toothed edges 8 the This method of inserting plugs haspoints of the teeth extending forwardly toward the head or shank 7 and which are adapted to grip the face of the brick work When the lug is inserted and revent its Withdrawa therefrom. The blade is preferably pointed as at 9 so as to facilitate its in- Shank 7 is illustrated as cylindrical in form though othei` forms may be used equally as well, and is iilled with a soft material preferably lead or wood in which a bore 10 is rovidedslightly smaller in diameter than the screw to be inserted/so that the screw will cut threads 1Vin the soft material.
In securing theplugs in brick or other Walls it is driven into the mortar or cementv preferred form as illustrated in the preceeding ligures ofthe drawing.
It will be observed from the above construction that I have provided a wall plug that is easily inserted in a brick or other jointed wall and one whose shape will insure 1t against withdrawal under ordinary con-` ditions. It will be further noted by reference to Figs. 3 and 4 that the segmental form and resiliency of the blade 6 further increases its tendency against withdrawal.
IIaving described myV invention what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is s 1. A wall plug comprising, a resilient spoon shaped blade, a cylindrical shank integral with said blade, a hollow core carried in said shankand means for engaging said core.
2. A wall plug comprising, a spoon shaped blade, a cylindrical shank integral with said blade, the distance between the edges ol said blade being greater than the diameter of said cylindrical shank, a core of soft material carried by said shank, and attaching means adapted to coperate with said core.
3. A wall plug comprising, a spoon shaped blade having serrations on the edges thereof,
aey'lindrical shank foimdintegral with said In Witness that I claim the foregoing l blade, the distance between the edges of said have hereunto subscribed my name this 12 blade being greater than the diameter of said day of June, 1907. cylindrical shank, a Gore| of soft material FRANK M. MARSHALL. vv5 carried by said shank, and attaching means Witnesses:
adalpted to co erate with said core, substan= EDMUND A. STRAUsE, tial y as deseri ed. TRIMBLE BARKELEW.
