To all whom it may comer-n:
Be it known that I, WrmLAon L. SELLECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brodhead, in the county 01' Green and State 01' ,Yisconsin, have invented a new and useful Hydrant, 01' which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hydrants.
T he object of the present invention is to improve the construction of hydrants and to prevent the same from being lil'ted out of the ground by the freezing thereof, and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpen sive hydrant, having means for protecting it l'rom the el l'ect of sediment, and adapted to permit the water in the discharge pipe to drain from the hydrant, when the flow of water has been shut oil.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter l'ully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed outin the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any 01 the advantages of the invention.

1 designates the hydrant casing, which loosely receives and is adapted to slide on the lower section 2 01' a valve casing, so that should the ground freeze and lift the hydrant casing, it will not afiect the valve mechanism or the connections of the same with the water supply pipe 3 and the discharge pipe 4 ol' the hydrant. By this construction, the hy drant is rendered i'rost proof and the threads and couplings thereof will not be broken through the action of the frost.

3, and provided with a beveled lower edge 7, forming a seat for a lower valve 8. The section 2 ol the valve casing forms an interior valve chamber, and its upper end is provided with interior screw threads 9 and receives an .upper section or member 10, exteriorly threaded at its lower end to engage the threads of the lower section or member. The upper section 10 is provided with a beveled lower end 11, forming a seat for an upper valve 12.
The lower valve 8 is provided with a tubular stem 13, having inlet openings 14 at its lower end and extending through the lower reduced portion of the valve casing and provided at its upper end with an exterior shoulder 15 and upwardly projecting arms or portions 16. The shoulder 15 is located above and is arranged to engage an interior shoulder 17 of the valve casing to limit the downward or opening movement of the lower valve. The upper valve 12 is also provided with a hollow stem 18 of tubular form having inlet openings 19 at its lower end and provided at an intermediate point with a drain opening 20, located above the upper end of the upper section 10 of the valve casing, when the upper valve is closed, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The drain opening permits the water, contained in the discharge pipe 4 and the upper portion of the valve stem 18, to escape into the space between the hydrant casing and the hydrant mechanism. The water thus escaping [lows downward, passes the valve casing and soaks into the ground.
The upper end of the tubular valve stem 18 is connected by a suitable coupling 21 with the lower end 01 the discharge pipe 4, which is raised and lowered by suitable mechanism, to open and close the upper valve. The upper valve in its opening movement is adapted to engage the upwardly projecting portions of the lower valve and open the latter. This permits water to How upward through the valve stems into the discharge pipe 4. The opening movement of the upper valve carries the drain opening into the upper section or member of the valve casing, which covers or closes the opening 20, so that there will be no leakage when the water is turned on. The upper valve is closed by the operating mechanism of the hydrant, and the pressure of the water operates to maintain the lower valve in its closed position. The lower valve serves to protect the upper valve from sediment accumulating in the Waterm'ain.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1* 1, In, a hyQlnantQ- .,the combination of a .valve" casing having a valve seat and provided with an exterior polygonal wrenchreceiving portion and having its lower portion threaded for connection with a water supply pipe, a valve operating within the casing and arranged to engage the valve seat and provided with a tubular stem, a discharge pipe connected with the stem of the valve, and a hydrant casing loosely receiving the valve casing and spaced therefrom by the exterior polygonal portion thereof and adapted to be lifted by a freezing of the ground.
2. In a hydrant, the combination of a valve casing provided with upper and lower valve seats and having a chamber located between the seats, an upper valve operating in the chamber and arranged to fit the upper valve seat and having a hollow stem, a discharge pipe connected with the hollow stem, and a lower valve engaging the lower valve seat and having a hollow stem extending into the said chamber so as to be directly engaged and operated by the upper valve.

In a hydrant, the combination with a valve casing having an interiorly arranged valve chamber and provided with an upper interior valve seat and having a lower valve seat arranged exteriorly of the chamber, an upper valve operating within the valve chamber and arranged to engage the upper valve seat and provided with a hollow stem forming a water passage, and a lower valve casing cooperating with the lower valve seat and having a hollow stem extending into the valve chamber and arranged to be directly engaged by the upper valve and having means for engaging the valve casing interiorly of the chamber to limit the opening movement of the lower valve.

In a hydrant, the combination of a valve casing having an interiorly arranged chamber and provided with upper and lower seats, an upper valve 006 erating with the upper seat and having a ho low stem forming a passage for the water, and a lower valve cooperating with the lower seat and provided with a hollow stem forming a water passage and extending into the valve chamber and arranged in the path of the upper valve and adapted to be directly actuated by the same to open the lower valve and having means arranged interiorly of the chamber for engaging the bottom thereof to limit the opening movement of the lower valve.
5. In a hydrant, the combination of a valve casing having an interior chamber and provided with upper and lower valve seats and having a shoulder located between the said seats, and upper and lower valves cooperating with the valve seats and having hollow stems forming passages for the water, the lower valve being extended into the valve casing and arranged to be actuated by the upper valve and provided with means for engaging the said shoulder to limit the opening movement of the lower valve.

In a hydrant, the combination of a valve casing having an interior chamber and provided with upper and lower valve seats and having a shoulder located between the said seats, and upper and lower valves cooperating with the valve seats and having hollow stems forming passages for the water, the lower valve being extended into the valve chamber and provided with a flange to engage the said shoulder and having a projection arranged in the path of the upper valve and adapted to be engaged by the same to open the lower valve.
7 In a hydrant, the combination of a valve casing composed of separable sections or members and provided with a threaded lower portion for connecting it to the supply pipe and having an interior valve cham er formed with a bottom shoulder, said valve casing being also provided with upper and lower valve seats located above and below the said shoulder, upper and lower valves cooperating with the said seats and provided with hollow stems having openings and forming passages for the water, the lower valve stem being provided with means for engaging the said shoulder and arranged to be actuated by the upper valve, and a discharge pipe connected with the upper valve stem.
