UNITED STATES IENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND HAUFF, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
SIGN.
T o all who-m, it fmcg/ concern.:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND HAUFF, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county ol' Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, ol which the following is a specific ation.
My invention consists in making a sign of such curvature as to facilitate, the reading of letters placed thereon.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a iront elevation of a sign embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the saine. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 Fig. 1.
The sign. is constructed substantially on the lines of a parabola curve in vertical cross section immediately in the center, a narrow central longitudinal portion thereof being llat as at 6 while the ends oi the portion 6, as well as the ends oi' the other portion oi the sign are curved toward the front sharply as at 7 to give a converging effect. The top and bottom portions of the sign 8 and 9 being for their major longitudinal portion Hat, but at the ends drawn toward the 'front with a blunt curve as at 7, the said curve beginning at 9 and gradually merging from a flat surface to a curved surface at each end of the sign as at 10. The edge oi the sign being concaved as at 11.
We will assume that the sign is 34 inches high by 50 inches wide, from outside of shell; a .5() inch tangent line touchin the edges across its Width, at its center7 Wi l show a 12 inch depth to center oi its concavity, that is 12 inches from such tangent line to center body of sign; while a vertical tangent line,

from middle of top line of shell to its bottom line, the center o' such vertical line being 5 inches from body of center of shell shows the incurve of top and bottom lilies o'l' shell.
11 is a wooden piece secured to thc back ol' the sign and affords means for suspending said sign 3 12 is a wire, or gas conduit, leading into the center ol' the sign; 13 is an electric light bulb and 14 is a clamp ring secured to the light socket, said ring carrying arms 15 to which is attached a shield 16 placed immediately in front oi' the light to prevent the rays of light shining in the i' ace of a person looking at the sign.
The construction oi the sign on a substantially parabola curve the lat portions 8 and 9 and the general perimeter of the sign result in confining the light to the sign and bringing all letters on the sign directly in i'ront of the eves of a person reading it without perceptibly moving the eyes to bring all matter in `focus instantly.
As a new article of manufacture, a sign. having a central longitudinal Hat portion, comparatively narrow, with its ends curved toward the front to give a converging eiiect,
a top and bottom portion ilat in their vertical axis, inclined toward the front and bent at their ends toward the front with a blunt curve, the front edge of the top and bottom members being concaved.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND HAUFF. Witnesses:
