CANE FOR EXPLODING CAPS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES V. Wnnrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canes for Exploding Caps, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to an improvement in a cane for exploding caps, and the object is to provide means whereby a series of caps or tape having powder or other explosive at intervals thereon can be drawn forward and exploded one at a time as desired.
The invention relates to certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective, Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation with the cover removed, and Fig. 3 is a view of the hammer.
A, represents the casing having its interior hollowed outforming a recess 2, and the cover 3 is hinged at 4 for closing the recess and is held beneath the lug 5 at the upper end of the casing. At the upper end of the recess 2 a magazine 8 is formed which is preferably cylindrical in shape, and a circular spring 9 is received therein which conforms to the walls of the magazine and one end is received against a projection 10, and the other end bears against the wall of the recess 2.
A tape 11 having powder' or other explosive thereon at certain intervals is made into a roll and received over a pin 7 in the magazine. One end of the tape passes out of the magazine between the end of the spring 9 and the wall of the recess following this wall out over the jaw l2, which extends out Wardly from one side of the casing A. The upper end'of the casing A is provided with a socket 13 for the reception ol' a cane 15.
The hammer 14 is received through an opening 25 in the base of the casing, and is provided at its upper end with a Veshaped opening. One projecting end 16 is provided with springs 17 and 18, the spring 17 bearing against the tape 1l having a serrated edge 24 to cause the tape to be lfed along as the hammer drops downward and also preventing any back hre from the explosion of the cap whereby the remainder ol' the tape would Speeication of Letters Patent.

be set off. The other spring 1S bears on the jaw 12, thereby holding the tape thereon whereby, when the jaw on the hammer, which extends through the opening 20 in the wall of the casing, strikes the aw 12, it causes the explosion of the cap or powder on the tape from the force of the blow.
The hammer is preferably provided with a groove 21 on one side in which is received a coiled spring 22, which is connected to a lug 23 inthe side or wall of the base, and the other end of the spring bears against one end ofthe recess and is adapted to cause the hammer to be forced downward after an explosion has taken place, thereby forcing the tape along over the j aw 12 ready for another explosion as the hammer is forced into the casing.
It is evident that slight alterations might be made in the form and arrangei'nent of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but:-
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A cane comprising a casing, a magazine formed in the casing to receive an explosive tape therein, a aw in the casing, a hammer, feeding means on the hammer, and guiding means on the hammer for guiding the tape to the jaw.
2. A cane comprising a casing, a magazine formed in the casing to receive an explosive tape therein, a jaw on the casing, a hammer, an upper and a lower spring connected to the hammer, the ripper' spring adapted to feed the tape and the lower spring for guiding the tape into position and to prevent back lire.
3. A cane comprising a casing formed to receive an explosive tape therein, a jaw on the casing, a hammer, feeding means having a toothed or serrated edge connected to the hammer and guide means connected to the hammer for guiding the tape into position to be exploded.
