1 tion. 1 V
The object-of my invention is the rovir-,aion of a. gear for taking and .absor ing;I the in len th; tyre;
'elned frictionzl surface; 20, pince .strains and shocks incideiipo boiling and towing mainly through the medium o tric tional surfaces or elements movable one n pon another, and which preferably shall be supplemented by a cushioning device or flevices for takmg the initialstrains. The invention consists in certain :nivelties of construction and combinatie of ports as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The accom anying drawingillustrates an example of t le physical embodiment ol' the invention constructed accordingl to the liest mode I have so far devised for the praal ical .apflication of the principle. 25. 4
f 'is o. section taken in a vertical lplanc on the igurel is a top plan of the gear. Fig. 2
line a:-, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a an of ono of the cheek plates and shows t e relativo arra-n ement and location of the slots in the dringt sills or supports, and the cheek plates. Fig. 4 is a plan of one of the draft. links. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of Fig. 2 taken oma. plane substantially coiucidix with the drn* bai, keys and slots in tio central strin ers.
,Re erring to the figures, the numeral 1 desi natesan end sill of a. car floor frame; 2, e center sills or stx-in cra, in this insten-ce of channel beams, t cogli they naf' be of other shape in cross section' 3, che plateet secured by rivets to the wells of the channel beams; 4, a front slot in the web of each channel beam and cheek plate Si in length" V5, a. second Slot. 4" in length; (i, o anni sin ses" in leugen r, a anna an a" a draw bar of any atpprovecl a slot in the draw bar; 10, 1e draft links; 11 12,- 13, 14, slots in the draft links, all but lll elon ted; l5, a metallic compres sim block witua. lug seated within the end of 'the draw bar; 16, a hole therethrough; 17, a recess at one end of theblock and within the'body thereof; 1 8, an upper 1nclixied Afri'ctional surface; 19, s .lower inrs; 2l. the lever ends or handles; 22, curved fric-,tional cnahion 38, the links remaining sulticnah snrl'aces which engage thc :surfacel 18 and lll bounding the recess in the compression block; 28 the jaws of the pincers; 24, re` oessos in the jaws; 25, a spring or s )rin s or cushion between the jaws; 26, holes or a fulcrum pin; S37,` the ulcrum pin passed through tie holes and with its ends located within the slots in the links and sills or supporls; 28, the frictional surfaces at the ends of the jaws; .ll, a friction plate; 30,'a bons upon the face of the plate;.3l l friction surfaces at the'encl of the pinccrs Jaws; 32, lugs for supportuxg springs; 33, two sets of helical springs; 34. a follower block; 35, lu s sup-4 porting the helical springs; 36, a hole t u'ongh l. the block; 37,11 key passed through the block and also through the slots in the links and i sills; a Filler block riveted to the sills and against which the follower block rests in boiling; 39, a key meecd through the slot in the draw bar and lts ends located within thc slots of the links and sills or su ports; and -10 is a key assed through the Iliolo in the volnpreesion lock and its ends located and supported within the slots inthe links and sil s or stringere.
In practice the main parts of the gear ina he applied in connection with the so-called draft timbers or sills of a car, all the keys to be flat instead of round, and la spring or cushion 41 to be used between the lever ends.
A The several parte and elements of the coinbined dering` boing in the relative positions shown by the drawings, the mode of operation is as follows: In towing the draw bar is advanced, carrying with it the links which slide wer the ke 40 and fnleruinpin 2, and the follower lock and key 87. As the draw bar is further advanced the cushions 83 are compressed and the friction Iplate 29 is forced against the pincel-s jan-a ro alive to which they more in friotional contact and compress s .ring 25ms they turn in closing about the ulcrum pin. The lever ends of the piacere sinnlltaneonslv al'rproach ,each other and their frictiona surfaces travel downwardly upon .the inclined surfaces bounflin the recess in 4the compression block. n boiling the follower block is slationary and the draw bar, its key, tl1e co 1n pression block, the placers, and the. friction plate are forced rearwardly against the '.Y b' rennen of the' resence therein o elongated slots. cn the cushion 38 is present. the arrangement is auch that. the
' plate' the pl fulcrum pin can move about il rearwardl com ressmg the cushion and absorbing lig it shoe s before the pincers commence to turn il-out vthe fulcrum pin, then the lever ends und the inws commence to travel relntive to the frictionel surfaces lwith which they are in contact and at .the 'same time compress s ring 25. The operation is vthe same when t ic cushion' 83 is omitted and the plate end follower block are in contactl exce t that the pincers iminediatel) commence to' rn about the fulcrnni pin and compress the spring or cushion 25 and he lever ends and Jaws travel relative to the frictional surfaces with' which they are in contact. ObviouslyJ the degree of pressure between the frictionul surfaces may be regulated by theuse of springs or cushions 25 of unequal resistance to com ression.
