To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE L. DE LAND, Jr., citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to barrels, and finds an important embodiment in coin liegs, though the use to which the invention is to be put and the size of the barrel into which it is embodied are not to be considered as limitations of the invention.

It is one object of my invention thoroughly to seal the kegs or barrels so that if they are tampered with while in shipment, the tampering may be traced to the tamperer, owing to the condition of the seals that must be broken in order that access to the interior of the kegs may be secured.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear.

In practicing my invention, I desirably employ two prominent structural characteristics, one structural characteristic residing in means for preventing the removal of the end hoops of the keg or barrel, whereby the ends of the barrel may not be enlarged, thus guarding against removal of the heads of the barrel, the other prominent structural characteristic residing in the locking device for coupling the component boards of the heads of the barrel, seals being preferably employed which must be broken in order to sever the coupling between the component boards of the heads, whereby it will be impossible to tamper with the barrel heads without detection. The means for thus guarding against attack upon the barrel heads and the means for preventing the removal of the end hoops are, in connection with each barrel head, desirably mechanically inter-related so that the same sealing which renders it impossible to break open a barrel head without detection, also renders it impossible to remove the associate end hoop without detection.

In the preferred embodiment of myinvention, I employ the diametrically disposedportion of-each barrel head and mount thereupon clips which terminate in U-shaped guards that receive the contiguous ends of the barrel staves and the associate end hoop. To each side of this diametrical portion of each barrel head and upon the barrel head, there is provided a clip, which clips are desirably mounted near the periphery of the barrel head. The diametrical portion of the barrel head before mentioned, desirably supports a pivotally mounted bar which may be rotated into juxtaposition with the latter clips, whereupon the said clips and bar may be fastened together by means of a suitable seal, such as that commonly employed in connection with coin bags, for sealing cars, etc., which seals would have to be broken before the sections of the protected head could be taken apart and before the clips protecting the end hoop could be removed.

I/Vhile in the preferred embodiment of my invention the same seal or seals act to guard against the undetected breakage of a barrel head and the undetected removal of the associate end hoop, I do not wish to be limited to a construction in which the same seal performs this double function.

I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred embodiment thereof, in which- Figure l is a view in section of a barrel equipped in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in cross-section of an end of the barrel, taken in a direction at right angles to that in which Fig. 1 is taken. Fig. 3 is an end view of a barrel showing a portion of my device in an alternative position, by dotted lines. Eig. 4 is a detail view showing the locking and sealing mechanism entering into my invention.

Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.

The keg a may be of any suitable construction, shape and height. The type of keg illustrated is one adapted for the shipment of coin, though, as hitherto stated, the'invention is not to be limited to this utility. Each barrel end has a head c composed, as is usual, of a number of boards. which when assembled, constitute a disk having its peripheral portion chamfered to be received within a groove d in the end of the barrel, a hoop e being provided at each barrel end for snugly inclosing the barrel head c within the end of the barrel and tightly forcing the chamfered portion of the barrel head into the corresponding groove d. lt is one of the objects of my invention to provide means whereby this barrel hoop may not be displaced without detection. To this end, I have mounted upon each barrel head a plurality of clips f that receive the ends of the contiguous barrel staves and the contiguous portions of the associate end hoops. The clips cannot be displaced from their guarding positions unless the barrel heads are broken up, and in order that the clips may not be removed Without detection, the portions of the barrel heads that would have to be separated in order to permit of the removal of the clips, are sealed together, this being my preferred arrangement. rlhe portions of the barrel heads that must be separated in order to permit of the displacement of the clips, are desirably sealed together by the construction illustrated which includes clips g mounted near the peripheries of the barrel heads and a bar 71, adapted to join said clips g and being sealed in connection with said clips, when the keg has been put together, by means of seals i of any well known and suitable construction, which seals must be broken in order to permit of separation of the sections of the barrel head, which, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, are guarded by the clips g and the bar 7L', said clips and bar together extending substantially diametrically across the barrel head,

and at right angles or angularly to the meeting edges of the sections or boards composing the heads. In order that the heads may be readily displaceable when the kegs have been received at the points of their destination, the clips f are desirably mounted upon the same section of the associate head, which section, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, is a central section that is of Wedge-shape in cross-section, the sides of the Wedge converging toward the center of the barrel or keg, and, consequently, diverging outwardly away from the barrel, so that when the bar L is relieved of sealing connection with the clips g, the said wedge section 7c of the barrel head may be readily Withdrawn, in a direction perpendicular to the barrel head whereafter the sections of the head remaining in the barrel may be approached so that free access to the barrel may be afforded. The central section of the head when being put into place, serves to have wedging action upon the other sections, so as to force the barrel head into engagement with the barrel. In order that the section 7 may be readily displaced, it does not have engagement with the groove d but is merely held in place by the suitable iocking means herein disclosed. To this end, it is sufficient that the section k be free at one end of engagement with the barrel, as is apparent. The embodiment of the invention herein shown and particularly described includes a barrel having both of its heads similarly guarded against undetected breakage. In the embodiment of the invention shown, either head may be opened when the keg has reached its destination, but l do not wish to be limited to a construction wherein either head may be thus opened, for it is obvious that one head of the barrel or keg may be permanently and iiXedly closed and that the other head alone may be adapted for authorized removal.

The portion of the barrel head to which the cli sf are attached, although readily displaceable from the balance of the barrel head, are locked in position when the bar 7L is swung beneath the engaging raised portions of the clips g, these engaging raised portions carrying ears l that are perforated and through which perforations the wire 4or string of the seals t' may be passed, in order that the locking engagement between the said bar and clips g may not be broken Without detection. The ears Z constitute what I term sealing means, whereby undetected tampering with the barrel is guarded against. l consider it to be broadly new with me to provide a barrel that has a barrel head including a section that is readily displaceable in combination with locking means for holding the sections of the barrel head together, whether or not these sections of the barrel head are sealed to guard against undetected breakage.

l use the term barrel in the claims as relating very broadly to structures including staves, hoops and heads, and l do not Wish to be limited to a structure wherein the staves are bulged outwardly at the middle and taper toward both ends of the barrel, as it is very obvious that my invention may be embodied in a structure that does not possess such shape.

It is obvious that many changes may be made in the device of my invention herein shown and particularly described, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and l do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise construction shown, but,

Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following z- 1. A barrel having a head including three separable sections in its formation, said sections being located side by side, a fastening bar on the intermediate one of'said sections, fastening clips upon the sections between which said intermediate section is disposed and into and out of fastening engagement s a with which said bar may be swung, said inl head, and clips carried by said head and termediate section being free at one end of direct interlocking engagement with the barrel, whereby when said section is freed,

it may readily be removed, thereby permitsections being removable perpendicularly to ting the balance of the barrel head to be collapsed, and clips carried by said head and sufficiently covering the upper barrel hoop to prevent removal of said hoop when the barrel head is in place and its sections are fastened together, said intermediate section having wedging or spreading action upon its com lemental sections when the sections of the ead are fastened together, whereby the head may be spread into interlocking engagement with the barrel when its sections are fastened together and may be coli which said intermediate section is disposed lapsed when its sections are unfastened.

bar on the intermediate one of said sections, fastening clips upon the sections between which said intermediate section is disposed and into and out of fasteningI engagement with which said bar may be swung, said intermediate section being free at one end of direct interlocking engagement with the barrel, whereby when said section is freed, it may readily be removed, thereby permitting the balance of the barrel head to be collapsed, and clips carried by said head and sufficiently covering the upper barrel hoop to prevent removal of said hoop when the barrel head is in place and its sections are fastened together.

3. A barrel having a head including three separable sections in its formation, said sections being located side by side and extending substantially across the head, a fastening device for uniting the sections of the barrel head, and clips carried by said head and sufficiently covering the upper barrel hoop to prevent removal of said hoop when the barrel head is in place and its sections are fastened together, the intermediate one of said sections being removable perpendicularly to-the barrel head and being free at one of its ends of direct interlocking engagement with the barrel, whereby when said section is freed, it may readily be removed, thereby ermitting the balance of the barrel head to be collapsed, said intermediate section having wedging or spreading action upon its complemental sections when the sections of the head are fastened together, whereby the head may be spread into interlocking engagement with the barrel when its sections are fastened together and may be collapsed when its sections are unfastened.

Ll. A barrel having a head including three separable sections in its formation, said sections being located side by side and extending substantially across the head, a fastening device for uniting the sections of the barrel sufficiently covering the upper barrel hoop to prevent removal of said hoop when the barrel head is in place and its sections are fastened together, the intermediate one of said the barrel head and being free at one of its ends of direct interlocking engagement with the bari'el, whereby when said section is freed, it may readily be removed, thereby permitting the balance of the barrel head to be collapsed.

5. A barrel having a head including three sei'iarable sections in its formation, said seetions being located side by side, a fastening bar on the intermediate one of said sections, fastening clips upon the sections between and into and out of fastening engagement with which said bai' may be swung, and clips carried by said head and sufficiently covering the upper bariel hoop to prevent removal of I said hoop when the barrel head is in place and its sections aie fastened together.

6. A barrel having a head including three separable sections in its formation, said sections being located side by side and extending substantially across the head, a fastening baiI on the intermediate one of said sections, and fastening clips upon the sections between which said intermediate section is disposed and into and out of fastening engagement with which said bar may be swung, said intermediate section being removable perpendicularly to the barrel head and being free at one end of direct interlocking engagement with the barrel, whereby when said section is freed, it may readily be removed, thereby permitting the balance of the barrel head to be collapsed.

7 A barrel having a head including three separable sections in its formation, said sections being located side by side, a fastening bar on the intermediate one of said sections, and fastening clips upon the sections between which said intermediate section is disposed and into and out of fastening engagement with which said bar may be swung.
