Description

. useful Improvements in Switches, -of which iol LOULIE QUATTLEBAUM, OF DEGATUR, MISSISSIPPI.
SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
A Patented June 15, 1909.
Application led October 29, 1908. Serial No. 460,065.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, LoULIE QUATTLE- BAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Newton and State of Mlsslssippi, have invented new and the following is a speciiicatiqn.
The invention relates generally to an improvement in switches and particularly to a telephone knife switch. I
VThe main object of the present inventio'n is the provision of a switch in which the blade has a pivotal and sliding connection with one terminal post, whereby connection may be made between two or more terminal posts at the will of the operator. i
The invention will be described in the following speciicatin, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawing, 1n whichz- N..
Figure 1 is a yiew in elevation illustrating my improved switch. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe same Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig, 4 a transverse section of the same on line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, my improved switch comprises a base 1 constructed of insulating. material in which. there may. be secured during the molding of the base a series of terminal posts, as 2, 3, and 4, these posts being preferably formed to insure proper connection with the base and being provided With binding screws in their lower ends -to permit the connection of the wires. o
The details of structure of the tebrminal post or base are not material to the resent lnvention, and it is to be understoo that-I contemplate the use of any desired form or arrangement of these parts. `An essential feature of the construction, however, is that the terminal posts inust be in alinement, and preferably, though not necessarily, longitudina]ly slitted to provide divergent arms 6, as shown in Fig. 4. The knife or switch blade inclu'tles a blade proper 7 to one end of which lthere is secured a handle 8 in any usual or preferred manner. The central ost 'of the series, as 3, carries a pivot` pin 9 liridgingthe space between the arms-6 of saidpost, and on this pin the' blade 7 of the knife is' s'lidably and pivotally mounted.
The connection is secured by forming the blade 7 with an elongated'slot 10, which embraces the pivot pin, as,s-llown in` Fig. 3.
The blade is thus pivotally and slidably connected to the central post 3, itbeing understood that the blade proper is'of a length somewhat exceeding the maximum distance between the end posts Q and 4,
while the slot 10 is of a length somewhat exceeding the distance between the central post and either of the end posts.
In use it will be apparent that connection may be made between the central post and either end post 2 and 3 by turning the blade on its vpivotal su port and seating that portion of the blade eyond the slot between the arms 6 ofthe designated post. With the construction described it is also possible to cause the blade to electrically connect all three posts by sliding the blade longitudinally and disposing it between the divergent arms of i the respective posts, as shown m Fig. 3.
rlhe improyed switch thus provides a means whereby a mam terminal post, as 3,
may be connected with either one or bothofthe spaced terminal posts, thereby materially facilitating 'and increasing the function of the Switch.
Having thus described is claimed as new, is
1. A switch including a central terminal post and endl terminal posts, and a blade having a pivoted and sliding connection with the the invention what central terminal post to permit-its en age- 5 ment with eitherone or both of the en terminal posts.
2.V A base having a central terminal post and end terminalposts arranged in alinement jwith the central terminal post and with each `other, andcafblade having a slidingand plvotal connection with-the central ternunal post,
the" sliding movement of the blade being in excess of the distance between the central post and either end ost.
3. A switch including threeterminal posts, a blade formed with'an elongated opening, and a pin carried b one of said posts and ada ted to be passe through the o ening in the Lblade, whereby said blade is sli( ably and l,pivotally connected to one of the posts and ada ted for engagement with either or both of tiie remaining lusts.
In testimony whereof l allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
