Description
JAMES P. HASKIN, OF SYRACUSE, NEV YORK.
MANUFACTURE OF COMMON SALT.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom t may concern Be it lmown that I, JAMES P. 'I-IAsKIN, of Syracuse, in the co-unty of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and improved mode of purifying saline waters or of separating impurities or bitterings contained therein from the salts in the process of manufacturing in vats or pans, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a screen or false bottom or floor placed in the vat or pan (see letters B, B, B, B, and C, C, C, C, in drawings) containing saline water or brine, for the manufacturing of salt, a few inches or proper distance above the bottom of the vat or pan. Before and up to the time the salt begins to crystallize this screen or false bottom or floor is to stand open or turned up vertically in sections, (see letters B, B, B, B) or removed so as to allow impurities or bitterings to settle below or' deposit upon the bottom of the vat or pan. I/Vhen the salt begins to crystallize the screen or false bottom or floor is to be turned down as seen in letters O, C, C, C, placed or replaced so as to form a cover over the impurities or bitterings that have settled below or deposited upon the bottom of the vat or pan. Upon this screen or cover or false bottom or ioor the salt will deposit and be kept sepa- 9,248, dated September 7', 1852.
rate from the impurities or bitterings that have settled or deposited below.
I construct my screen or false bottom or floor of board or metal slats of convenient uniform length width and thickness with one pivot on each end of the slat for it to turn and rest upon to be placed near one edge as seen at b. The slats to be hung in the vat or pan on a horizontal line so that when turned down horizontally they will form a plain oreven surface as near as may be and at such a distance apart that they will shut against each other on the edges. The edges of the slats may be beveled: each edge parallel to the other so that they willturn up and down without binding against each other. The slats may be turned up and down by means of the lever D, connected by a rod and joints to a bar a, secured with a pivot or joint to the slats on the edges that turn up. A
What I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent is-- The use of a screen, false bottom or Hoor in the vat or pan containing saline waters or brine for manufacturing salt, to separate impurities or bitterings from the salt, substantially as herein described or any other mode substantially the same.
JAMES I. IIASKIN,
Witnesses:
H. R. HASKIN, E. HAsnIN.
