platens of typewriting machines, and its object is to provide sim le, inexmnsive and practicable means for a ordmgt e' read y detachment of-a platen and substitution oi-another one in tie typewriting machine, To
provided with a hub, which is mortised radially, and each of two short-platen axles j ournaled in the ends of the platen frame) is provided with a tenoned part which fits into the mortise in the hub. Upon the platen when desired, and may be easily replaced and mechanically locked in exact alinement with the platen axles.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional front elevation of a platen detacha'bly mounted in a platen frame by means of the present devices. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of detaching the platen from the platen frame. Figs 3 is a sectional end elevation showing the platen unlocked or released from the platen axle. Fig. 4 is asimilar view showing the platen locked to the platen frame. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but shows the method of lifting-the platen from tlre'platen axle. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the locking disk, whigh is mounted upon each of the laten heads.
The platen frame of an lnderwood ma chine usually comprises ends 1, 2, united by a plate 3, which serves to guide the paper into the machine. In each of the platen frame ends is suitably journaled an axle 4, each carrying a hand wheel 5, whereby to turn the platen 5; and since the parts at one .end of the platen are du licat'es of those at the other end thereof, on y those at one end will be described.
Each of the usual laten. heads 6 is irovided with an integral or other fixed hu 7, which is rad1ally mortised or slotted at. 8, to
receive a tenoned member 9, which is fixed riting i ich thefollowing is a specifi 5 p )ortion of the disk is cut away at 14, to re- This 'invention'relates to the revoluble l l This tenoned tise 3.
Upon each head of the )latenframe is held ease the'plate'n from the tenoned member;
5 and by means of a finger-piece formed on the disk, the latter may be turned upon the hub 7 either to release the platen, as at Fig. 3, or to look it to the tenoned member, as at f Fig. 4; a portion 16 of the disk hooking over this end, each of the usual platen heads is hub and tenoned member to lock *to the hub.
mortise, Fig. 5, and the hook portion 16 of" the lockin disk or lever is effective to clamp the shoul ers of the tenoned member firmly against the seats of the hub.
When it is desired to take the platen from theaxles, as at Figs. 1 and 5. To replacethe platen, theoperation is reversed, the hubs part 9 fits closely in the lnori the machine both finger-pieces 15 are'swu'ng forwardly from the Fig. 4 position to the Fig, 3 position, and then the p aten'is lifted from eing slipped down upon the tenoned m-e 'nbers unti they rest against the seats 18, whereupon the finger pieces 15 are moved to the Fig. 4 position,

to-lock the parts firmly Variations may be resorted to within the' sco e of the invention.
I aving thus described my invention, I claim: i 1. The combination with a platen frame having a platen axle journaledin its end, of a platen having a radially mortised hub to receive a tenoned art on the platen axle, and revoluble releasa le means surroundin' said the atter 2. The combination with a platen frame having a platen axle j ournaled in its end, of a platen having a mortised hub, a tenoned art on said platen axle to fit in said mortised ub, said tenoned part bein provided with a shoulder to fit a seat on t 1e hub, and revoluble releasable means surrounding said hub and tenoned member to lock the'shoulder to the seat. I Y
.3. The combination with a platen frame having a platen axle 'ournaled in its-end, of a platen provided'with a head and having a cutaway slots being provided in said disk, and headed l on the platen head, to lock said tenon re- E leasably in said mortised hub.
1. The combination witha platen l'rame having a platen axle. journalcd-in its e1 d, of a l platen provided with a head andhaving a l mortised hubprojecting tenoned part on said platen axle to fitin said mortised hub, and
leasably in'said to turn upon said hub and part. v
5. The combination with a platen frame having a platen axle journaled in its end, of a platen provided with a head and having a mortised hub projecting i'romsaid head, a tenoned part on said platen axle to fit in said mortised hub, and a locking plate mounted on'the platen head, to locksaid tenon releasi ably in said mortised hub, said looking plate rovided with a finger-piece and in the form of a diskturning upon said hub and having a portion to be turned into register with said tenoned part to release the same.
6. The combination with a platen frame having a platen axle journaled in its end, of a platen provided with ahead and-having a mortised hub projecting from said-head, a tenoned part on said platen axle to fit in said mortised hub, a locking plate'mountedon the platen head, to lock said tenon releasably in said mortised hub, said locking plate provided with a finger-piece and in the form of a disk turning upon said hub andhavin'g a cutaway portion with said tenoned part to release the same,
from said head, a I
