Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1909.
' Application filed July 16, 1908. Serial N0. 443,914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES BERNsT, a
, citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefu l Improvements in Sunday-School Registers,-of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a register adapted for use in Sunday schools and the like, and intended to incite the pupils to great endeavors in increasing the attendance and collection of the school.
The invention embraces a register made in imitation of a thermometer having columns of figures thereon indicating the attendance and also columns of figures indicating col-.
lection-sums, with a plurality of bands for each of said columns which are preferably arranged in stretches divided-into portions of more than one color-and independently operably for indicating the comparative collection and attendance say, of a given Sunday,
in two succeeding years.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description and claim, and from the drawings, in which latter:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line z z of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of my improved device. Fig. 4 is an enlarged edge elevation of the polnter and handle therefor. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same, the upperstretch of the band being shown in section on the line y l/ of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail in front elevation showing a reinforce-plate for the walls of one of the slots through which the respective bands pass; and, Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the same on the line m-r of Fig. 7.
1 re resents a plate which may be in a suitab e frame 2. The plate is provided with a designation Attendance, as shown at 3, and a designation Collection, as shown at 4, for designatingtan attendancecolumn and a collection-column.
5 is an attendance-band on which are shown progressive numerals designating attendance. This band is in the form of a continuous loop and passes through slots 6 7,
the progressive numerals continuing along the rear stretch of the band as shown in Fig. 3.
10 is a collection-band'on which are indicated progressive figures of collection values, this band preferably forming a loop which passes through slots 14 15 in the plate, the progressive figurescontinuing along the rear stretch of said band so that, if desired, selective stretches of figures may be caused to appear at the front of the plate.
"Opposite the numbers on the band 5 there are separate scales 2O 21. A'pointer-band 22 is between the scales 21 and a pointerband 23 is at the side of the scales. The pointer-band 22 preferably comprises a stretch 24 of a given color, for instance red, and a stretch 25 which ma be white, there being a pointer 26 between said stretches which has a handle 27 thereon at the front of said plate, the pointer being arranged to be placed opposite "any division of the scales 20. The pointer-hand preferably forms a loop which passes through slots 28 29 in the plate. The pointer-band 23 preferably comprises a stretch 30 of a given color, Which'l prefer shall be different from the stretch 24 and which may for instance be blue, the other stretch 31 of said pointer-band 23 being white, there being a pointer 26 at the meeting points of said stretches at the front of said plate. This pointer is also provided with a handle 27 at the front of said plate. The pointer-hand forms a loop which passes through slots 32 33 in the plate 1.
Under the designation Collection there are separate scales 35 36 in registry with the denominations of figures on the band 10. Be-
tween these scales there is a band 37 and to one side of the same there is a band 38. The band 37 preferably comprises a stretch 39 of a distinguishing color for instance, red, and the stretch 40 for instance being white, at the meeting point of which, stretches at the front of said plate there is an indicator 26 having a handle 27 thereon by which the loop of the band 37 is ada ted to be moved through its slots 41 42. and 38 forms a loop having stretches at the front and rear of said plate and passing through slots 45 46 in said plate. It referably comprises a stretch 47 of a distinguishing color, for instance, blue, and a stretch 48 which may be white, which stretches are arranged to meet at a ointer 26 having a handle 27 thereon by which handle the loop may be moved in its slots from the front of the plate for moving the indicator opposite any designation at the front'of'the scale 35.
There is a space 49 between the attend-' ance-column and the collection-column in which suitable designations in imitation of thermometer readings may be shown, as inhaving the designation 59 of a different year in connection therewith, so that for instance the adjacent bands 23 and 38 appear to proceed from the representation 56 of a thermometer bulb and the distanced bands 22 and 37 may appear to proceed from the other of said bulbs. The bulbs have designations of different years thereon. The pointers on the bands 23 38 respectively indicate for instance the respective attendance and collection for the year 1907, and the pointers on the bands 22 37 indicate the attendance and collection for the year 1908. In this manner the attendance and collection between the year 1907 and the year 1908 is shown in prominent contrast and acts as an incentive to the pupils to bring the attendance and the collection of the later year to such figures that as great an improvement as possible will be shown between the years.
The device may be made in large form so that the comparative results of attendance and collection of the different years may appear prominently to the whole class or school. It forms a pleasing appearance, the different colors of the stretches on the respective bands aiding in the pleasing appearance and,
if desired, the thermometer-bulbs may show a different color, for instance, yellow but preferably gilt.
The junction of the respective stretches of the pointer-bands to their handles may be obtained by forming the pointer 26 of a separate iece (see Figs. 4, 5 and 6) and bending the ower end 61 of the upper stretch under and in front of said pointer and the upper end 62 of the lower stretch around the top and the rear of said pointer, so that each of said ends is between the pointer and the opposite stretch of the band, the handle. 27 being placed in front of the lower stretch and rivets 63 passing through the flanges 64 of the handle and through said pointer and the thicknesses of the said respective stretches.
The plate 1 may be of card-board and if made of card-board I prefer to reinforce the slots by means of a reinforce-plate 65 having flanges respectively at the front and rear of said plate, the band passing through the slot in said reinforce-plate.
Havin thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' In a Sunday-school register, the combination with a scale having indicia, of a plurality of movable bands each having indicating means adapted to operate in conjunction with saidcseale, said bands respectively designating independent periods and serving as a comparative register.
I11 testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name hereto in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES BERNST.
itnesses I'IARRY I'IENKE, ROBERT A. BLACK.
