Application filed December 16, 1908. Serial No. 467,859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be 1t known that l, MAXIMILIAN F. BON- arrivo,` a vcitizen oi' the United States, residing 1 in llnladelplna, Pennsylvania, have Invented certain improvements In Rail-Fastenings, of
which the following is a specification.
lli-ly invention `relates to means employed in connection with railroad rails to, resist and prevent creeping of the same.
Devices to resist or prevent the lrail creep'- ingk are usually applied so as t anchor the middle of the rail, and .the structure forming the subject 0i my invention in the several embodiments indicated in the drawings will cbe placed at one or more points with respect to a rail with the same object in view.
ln my `Patent No 906,860, dated December 15, 1908, .l have described an improved form oi' rail fastening in which a wear-plate L5g() mounted upon the tie supports the rail; clips being employed to hold the rail in place, in ycombination with wedge blocks whichinain- ,tain said clips in proper holding position with respect to the rail and wear-plate, in my present invention, l propose to make use oi the form of wear-plates and wedge-blocks disclosed in my prior application, with a modified form of clip which. is positively securedto the rail. ln one form of my present structure the rail-engaging member, suitably apertured, might be employed as a splicebar.
My invention is 4lully shown in. the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a plan view of rail seeming means showing one vform of anti-creeping de- `vice embodying my invention 3 Fig. 2, is a sectional view of the same on the line a--a/: Fig. 3, is a plan view illustrating a modifica- 10 tion en'bodying my'invention, Figs. 4 and 5, are sec ional views of the same on the line 'tf-.band c-c, respectively; Fig. 6, is a view f illustrating a further modification embodying myinvention; Fig. 7, is a perspective view of the form oi' combined clip and anticreeping device shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. v8, is a erspective view of the form-ol combined c ip and anti-creeping device shown in L Figs. 3 and L1; Fig. 9, is a plan view illustrating; a further modification ol my invention in whlch'the anti-creeping deviceis designed to span the space between two/,ties and co-actj with wear-plates carried by each of said ties;
l Fig. 0, is a erspective viewv of the form ol i combined c lp and 4anti-creeping device 'shown in Fig. 9, and Figs. 11, 12, 13 and 14,
l are perspective views illustrating Inodiiied l forms of washers which I may employ with my improved structure.
in the drawings, 1 represents the rail; 2 a wear-plate, and 3 a tie upon which said wearvplate is mounted.. secured to., apwooden tie by means ol' bolts or lag screws 4 passing through the same, or when applied to a metallic tie, suoli as 33, the wearplate will be secured to a block 5 mounted on. saidy tie,4 by means of bolts da', both arrangements being substantially similar to the arrangement ofiastening means illustrated in my patent `above referred to.v
Mounted upon the wear-plate and secured 'thereto in a suitable manner, is avn special forni of .rail engaging member and clip servrlhis clip in the present instance comprises the wear-plate. and arrangedto extend over the flange of. the rail; such portion having a serrated outward edge 8, with an loverlianging lip 9 such portion of the structure being substantially the same as thatNill'ustrated in my. patent above referred to.v ln addition this clip member is provided with an upwardly projecting o the web of the rail? and an o'verhangmg ot' the wear-plate. As the wear-plate is iirmly securedto the tie, the ila-nge 11 resists movement oi the clip with respect to said `wear-plate and prevents undue shear on the means retaining sai-d clip in place, while the upwardly projecting portion 10 fastened to the rail prevents longitudinal movement of l the latter with respect to the tie. The portion 10 is apertured for the passage 0f one or more bolts 12, whereby the structure may be secured to the rail. The outer edgeloffthe clip fextends diagonally with respect-tothe wedge blocks 14, of the types'illustrated in my patent before referred to, are employed to adjust and maintain the clips in Contactv with the rail, such blocks thereby providing for lateral movement of 'the rail with respect to the wear-plateto adjust the 'gage of the track. Oneof these clips' will be mounted on each side of a rail at a given point when of the type illustrated'in Figs. 1 and 2,.and each clip will be fastened to the web oi the rail substantially in the manner shown. g
ln Fig. 3, l have shown amodied form of structure; that is to say, it has a pair of rail The wear-plate may be ing as an anti-creeping device for the rail.
a member having a portion 7 lying .uponV rtion 10 lying against flange 11 at its side which engages the edge flange or shoulder 130i the wear-plate, and
. of such boltsJ flange engaging portions 7a with diagonally faced toothed portions for engagement with] the wedge-blocks 14 whereby 1t is held tothe flange of therail; the wedge blocks being 1nterposed between its diagonally faced toothed i portions and the lange sectional view on the linec-c, Fig. 3, illustrating'the use of the flanges 11 at the sides ofthe retaining clips, (7 or 7 3,) to engage the edges of the weareplate 2.
The structure shown in Fig. 6, is substantiallythe same as that shown in Fig. 3, eX
cept that thewedge-blocks 14 are disposed to act toward each other, while those shown in Fig. 3 are arranged to act in the same direction.. y l
The form of clip shown in Figs. 1 and 3, is
'fully illustrated by the perspective View, Fig.
7, While thedouble form of clip shown in Fig. 3, is fully illustrated by the perspective view, Fig. 8.
. In Fig. 9,I have shown a further modifica-- tion of my invention in which the combined clip and anti-creeping device is of such a size as to span or bridge two ties. These ties are provided With the usual wear-plates, and each end of the bridgingmember has the notched'or serrated ortion for-engagement bythe wedge-blocks mterposed'between such portion and the flanges of the wear-plate. It will be understood that the structure shown in Figs. 9 and.10, if provided with additional bolt holes, could be employed as a splice-bar. The clips are secured to the wear-plates by bolts 15, in the manner shown; the heads 16 whether rounded or substantially so, as shown in Fig. 2, or cylindrical, as shown Figs. 4 and 5, are seated in similarly shaped recesses in the blocki, as in Fig. 2, or
inthe tie 3, as in Figs. 4 and 5. This construction provides means to assist the bolts 4 A to Y 'Vin holding the views, Figs. 11,' 12, 13 and 14.
`clip or other portion ofthe wear-plate 2 in position. l The bolts 15 are provided with squared nuts 18, as indicated, and to serve as retaining means for these nuts I may employ locking washers of the type illustrated in the perspective 'These locking washers comprise flat lates, with portions or iianges to be turned) up into engagement with the nut and portions to be turnedy down. into engagement With the sides of the structure held down bysaid nut. In Fig. 11, the washer is lindicated at 20; and -is substantially -like those illustrated in the several views in engagemenwith theseveral nuts 18. It has flanges c," b and c, the flanges a anda/engagv'ing the nut, While the ange b engages the rail may -be flange d, to engage the nut and a single flange s b to engage the clip. The washer 202, shown in Fig. 14, has a pair of flanges a and c to engage the nut, and a 4air of flanges b and d disposed at right ang es thereto to engage the clip. The several flanges are bent Aon the' dotted lines.
In lieu of the form of wedge-blocks shown in the drawings, I may employ any of the forms shownin my patent before referred to; the engaging portion of the clip being modified accordingly. l 'I claimf A 1.
