Theobject of this invention is to produce bottle labeling machines constructed so that the downward movements of the bottle-rest will rotater the gumming device and wherein the gumming device is formed of two similar partsrnounted to rotate in oppositely disposedtroughs, from "which the gumming plates 'collect the gum and travel to a posi' tion direc'tlyover the label before being lowered on to said label. y

This plate c is rovided with a forwardly projecting fixed arm ZC which serves to carry the gumming plate 7c over the label bed e until the said plate Zr is in the eXtreme forward position, whereupon it falls, by gravity, on to the contiguous half face of the label f. This is the osition shown in Figs. l and 3. Each cylin er section is rotated by means of an arm Z fixed to the bottle carrier plate d and provided with a toothed rack Z which gears with a pinion jzon the spindle js of the cylinder section. Each gumming plate ZC collects the gum from the Hat face y of its cylinder section j and carries the same to the label, and each plate is adapted to sup ly the gum to one-half of the label and the p ates Zr advance and retire to and from their respective cylinder sections by the downward and upward movements of the bottle carrier, leaving the gurnmed label exposed to the pressure of the bottle when the carrier is in the depressed position shown in Fig. 2. By this arrangement the gum is supplied to the whole surface of the label, and owing to each half of the gumming device being caused to move in oppositedirections there is no tendency for the label to be pushed or drawn away' from its proper position.
ln the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 each rotatable cylinder section ji is mounted in the trough Zt so that its curved face j* will sup ly the gum to a roller m rotatably mounte in pivoted brackets m in the trough 7L, from which roller m the gumming plate 7c collects the gum and carries it to the label. Each rotatable cylinder section jf is also provided with a fixed arm j6 which rojects beyond the side of the trough ZL an terminates in a cam-shaped head j7 against which bears a lever arm Z2 pivoted at Z3 to the vertical column b and connected by a link Z4 to the bottle carrier plate d. By this arrangement the sections jf are rotated from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 4 by the depression ofthe bottle carrier plate CZ', returning to the initial position by gravity acting on the counterweighted p arts y'4 of the sections.
The mode of operation is as follows A suitable number of labels f is placed upon the label bed e and a bottle n laced on the bottle rests ZZ is first pressed c ownward, causing will be caused to adhere to the bottle by the l pressure on the label bed e, which latter is constructed of flexible material as stated so as to conform, on depression, to the round shape of the bottle. T he upward movement of the bottle carrier will again rotate the sections j or and cause the gumming plates 7c to advance over and gum the next succeeding label ready for the next bottle, and so on with each succeeding` bottle.
Having fully described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-d
l. A bottle labeling machine comprising a vertically movable bottle carrier, a relatively stationary label bed, a two-part gumming device in which the parts move in opposite directions across the stationary label bed,
and a connection between each part of the gumming device and the bottle carrier, so that the parts of the gumming device will be rotated by the depression of the said carrier, substantially as described and for the purposes stated.
2. A bottle-labeling machine, comprising a vertically-movable bottle -carrier, a relatively stationary label bed, a two-part gumming device in which the parts rotate in opposite directions, a gumming plate pivoted. to each part of the gumming device, each of said gumming plates having a forwardly-projecting arm and being so connected to the rotating gumming device as to be caused to travel to the center of the label-bed before the gumming plate is lowered thereon, and a connection between each part of the gummingdevice and the bottle-carrier, so that the parts of the gumming device will be rotated by the depression of the said carrier, substantially as described and for the purposes stated.
3. A bottle labeling machine comprising a vertically movable bottle carrier, a relatively stationary label bed, a two-part gumming device in which the parts are mounted to rotate in oppositely disposed troughs, from which the gum is taken, each part having a gumming plate pivoted thereto, and a connection between each part of the gumming device and the bottle carrier, so that the parts of the gumming device will be rotated the depression of the said carrier, substantially as described and ior the purposes stated.
4. A bottle labeling machine comprising a verticallyT movable bottle carrier, a relatively stationary label bed, a gumming device formed of two similar parts mounted to rotate in oppositely disposed troughs and each in working relation with a pivoted gumming plate provided with a forwardly projecting arm, such gumming plates moving in oppositely disposed directions across the stationary label bed, and a connection between each part of the gumming device and the bottle carrier, so tnat the parts of the gumming device will -be rotated by the depression of the said carrier, substantially as described and lor the purposes stated.
5. A bottle labeling machine comprising a vertically movable bottle carrier, a relatively stationary label bed secured to crank arms pivoted to a liXed part of the machine, two gum troughs disposed on opposite sides of the label bed, a gumming device rotatably mounted in each of said troughs, a gumming plate pivoted to such gumming device and .having a forwardly projecting arm, and a connection between each part of the gumming device and the bottle carrier, so that the parts of the gumming device will be rotated by the depression of the said carrier, substantially as described and for the purposes stated.
