DEVICE FOR PREYENTING DOG NUISANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed December 26, 1907. Serial No. 408,190.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADEN H. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVaverly, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device forPreventing Dog Nuisance, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to improvements in devices for preventing dogs from committing the nuisance of urinating against buildings, walls, and other structures; and my object is to provide a device which may be conveniently placed at points where such nuisance has been, or is likely to be, committed, whereby an electric shock will be adminisistered to a dog, when attempting to commit such nuisance, which will effectually prevent a recurrence of the act in that locality by the dogs so punished.
I attain my object by means of a device constructed in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the device Figs. 2' and 3, vertical and horizontal. transverse sections thereof, respectively; and Fig. 4, a detail on an enlarged scale.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in the several views.
As a convenient means for locating the device where needed, I have illustrated it in a portable form; although I would have it understood that it may be a plied to buildings, etc, as a permanent vture in many suitable and ap ropriate ways.
As shown in the drawings the device comprises a plate A, of metal or other electrifiable materia supported in a frame, or standard B, which rises from a suitable. base. At each end of the plate pins C, C, which may be bent into shape from a single metal rod and fastened along the edge of the plate, project into socket pieces D of insulating material fitted into holes bored in the upri hts of the frame. These pins and sockets wi l preferably be inclined upward from the plate, in order that rain and moisture collecting on the plate cannot drain off to the uprights and thereby short circuit the plate.
E is a wire conductor leading to the plate from a socket F to which a wire from a source of electricity may be attached.
The plate, when coupled to an electric light circuit, or to a battery or other source of electric current of suitable power, becomes a terminal from which no current will pass until a ground connection is made. \Vhen, therefore, the device has been placed in position in front of a building, or the like, where dogs have been in the habit of committing nuisance, or are likely to commit nuisance, the next dog that attempts the act, will receive a severe shock the instant the stream of urine strikes the plate, by reason of the grounding of the current through the dogs body. er receiving one such shock it is believed that that particular locality will be shunned in the future by every dog s0 punished.
In order to protect passers from contact with the plate, I provide the bars G, spaced at suitable distances apart at one or both sides of the plate. Instead of these bars, a wire netting of open mesh may be used, or any other desirable form of grille. The plates may be fastened permanently in place, if desired, by attaching the insulating supports directly to a building or other structure, and they may be rendered inconspicuous by inclosing them in a more or less ornamental grille.
' The portable device, as herein illustrated, may be further utilized by attaching thereto advertising cards or boards, or the plates themselves may be employed to display advertisements. In fact, the idea may be embodied in many different forms and structural modifications.
' What I claim as my invention is- 1. A device of the character described comprising an electrifiable plate, an insulating support therefor, and means for connecting the plate to one pole of a source of electricity, connection between the plate and the opposite pole being established through the ground, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. A device of the character described comprising an electrifiable plate, a portable open-sided framework in which the plate is held exposed in a vertical position adjacent the ground upon insulatin supports, and means for" connecting the plate to one pole of a source of electricity.
3. A device of the character described comprising an electrifiable plate having an In testimony whereof I have affixed my expofied ls1de surfacef, an insulating lsupport signature, in presence of two witnesses. for t e p ate, means or connecting t e p ate to a. source of electricity, and a protective v ADEN ROBERTS' 5 grille inclosing the exposed surface of the Witnesses:
plate, substantially as and for the purpose -LEVI CURTIs, set forth. v O. M. YOUNG.
